Just to let you know why I didnt mention the "purple trim" is because, even you yourself just say "White lilly" since the "with purple trim" part does not exist naturally.

I think a white lilly with purple trim sounds like such a cool local flower. The fact that it, as you said, does not exist in nature makes it even more unique and special . . . that should say something about your sorority and I feel that you should be glad to use the full name of your flower.

Actually, if someone didn't know the basic information about my chapter, then I wouldn't call her a sister because she wouldn't be initiated. In my organization, you must pass a sorority education exam before you can become a sister and things like symbols are some of the very first topics mentioned.

However, to answer your question, if one of my sisters made an error in a post on a public forum, I would discreetly bring the error to her attention in a private e-mail or in a one-on-one conversation. I wouldn't criticize her publicly because that could result in embarrassment and hurt feelings -- two things that I would never want one of my sisters to experience due to something that I might have said or done. ;)

Tri Sigma chapters should not have local symbols. Although many do still have them (sometime traditions are hard to break). Our national symbol is the Sailboat. It's sort of cute that chapters have their own local symbol, but to stick true to Sigma we all are proud of our symbol the Sailboat and that is our 'only' symbol.

I don't understand this - has it always been this way? If so, why were they permitted in the first place, and if not, why eliminate a harmless tradition (unless the local mascot is a cockroach, or something)? I know ASA has many different local symbols and there doesn't seem to be a problem with it.

Tri Sigma has never allowed local symbols, we have always only had our national symbol, the Sailboat. This has been the same ever since we were founded. You can find more information on www.sigmasigmasigma.org or contact an Area Director. If any Sigma's have questions about this, please feel free to contact me privately.

Local symbols are not harmful, please don't get me wrong, and some NPC chapters or local sororities may have them. Tri Sigma just does not. Having one national symbol creates unity, having local symbols differentiates us, which we do not want. Many local Sigma groups have probably kept a local symbol or started one because the national organization or national officers did not know of it and therefor could not educate the chapter regarding this.

Im not sure if the other sororitys on this campus have "local" mascots, we use the lady bug but our main one is the lion.. more focus is on the lion :D

Phi Mu at my campus used to have the lady bug as their local mascot, also. I'm not sure if they do anymore.

The Panda
While not an official symbol, the Fraternity and our chapters consider the Panda to be its mascot.

The Color
Alpha Omicron Pi has only one color, cardinal. It is the color of the Fraternity flower, the ruby and the ribbon sometimes worn under the badge to welcome a new collegiate chapter.

The Jewel
Alpha Omicron Pi has only one jewel, the ruby. The occasional use of pearls or diamonds in special badges has no significance or special meaning.

The Rose
The Nineteenth Century French rose, General Jacqueminot, a deep red rose, was chosen as the flower of Alpha Omicron Pi because its color is the symbol of the central and essential virtue of the Fraternity. Its choice had no connection with any legend, poem or story. This strong red rose, with its overtones of courage and vigor, was selected for its richness of color and fragrance, combines with softness and modesty of bearing. The Jacqueminot Rose is not available at most florists, so any deep red rose which is available may be used.

The Wheat
The wheat indicates usefullness in its harvest. The binding together of the wheat into a sheaf gave Alpha Omicron Pi the new member pin, the name for the magazine, and the rings for the president and international president.


The Name of the Magazine
TO DRAGMA, the Greek, is translated as "the sheaf." The name was selected for three reasons: because it is a reminder of the common interest whch unites all AOIIs; because it is a record of accomplishment, or harvest; and because it fittingly describes the purpose of such a publication, the uniting of members through communication.


The New Member Pin
The binding together of wheat into a sheaf in the new member pin represents individuals bound by the common bond of Alpha Omicron Pi.

My collegiate chapter's local mascot is the Koala. We weren't really sure why, but that is what our Founding Mothers chose.

It's neat to have our own local mascot, in addition to the Crown, White Violet & Strawberries of Zeta Tau Alpha.

The chapter that I advise has the bunny as their local mascot.
