I made a polyvore for this. Because apparently I have too much time on my hands.

Here it is. What you'll see on a Penn State sorority woman on any given day. American Apparel hoodies, leggings, Nike shoes and shorts, riding boots, loose fitting tops and sweaters, bodycon dresses and cage heels. Welcome to Happy Valley.

I saw of two of these vertical letter cardigans during officer interviews at DePaul. That came out of nowhere. I've only been out of college for a year and a half! WTF!

Anyways, I came here because I am curious to know what the dudes are wearing as far as letters. I want to get my brother something with letters for Christmas, but I just don't know what. My fiance is not a good example...the only letters he ever wore were intramural shirts and this one pair of basketball shorts that he had. Of all the ways to wear letters, I usually saw guys wearing them on hoodies or hats. Is that still pretty much what they do?

I suddenly feel so un-hip. :(

ETA: I'm talking about the midwest, if that helps. I know it's a different story in the south.

I've even seen fraternity men with the sewn vertical lettered cardigans. Not something I would do post-grad (personally), but I don't hate it. However I don't imagine your brother's school/chapter would be the vertical cardigan type...:p

For guys, the lettered apparel I've seen doesn't usually go far beyond hoodies, t-shirts, hats, tack jackets, windbreakers, etc. I have seen a resurgence in crew neck sweatshirts, but that might be because of the area I've relocated to. I never saw crew necks in college (East Coast mid-atlantic/pretending to be southern lol).

ETA: I'd be willing to bet that guys clothes vary a lot more with region/campus culture...

^^I would definitely agree that this can be a campus/region thing. Also, I'm pretty sure you're spot on about the cardigan thing not working for dudes at my school! :D

Yeah, Oregon pretty much is a crew neck or sweatshirt only for Fraternity letters and they wore them horizontally. My boyfriend has one hat, but never wore it.

Sororities are beginning to pick up on the vertical letters. Or at least my chapter is, not sure about the others. Most of the sororities wear crew neck, v neck or sweatshirts with horizontal letters.

Yes to all the above, I was a collegian from '99-'02, and you must not forget of course, the dark wash bootcut jeans, navy blue or black peacoat, and "clunky" thick soled boots in the winter, black Steve Madden slides in the summer. When I graduated, the Kate Spade bags were going out of style and everyone had the logo printed Loius Vuitton bags.

Patagonia sweaters, skinny jeans, and black high heeled boots (we call them her pirate boots, avast ye matey!) or brown riding boots have been the big trend at OSU this winter, according to OSU daughter.

The recent St. John ads with Kate Winslet would make me believe that they are trying to shift their age demographics downward, as a couple of "more mature shopper" stores like Talbots have tried to do.

I think St. John, like Talbots, would have a long battle to market to younger women successfully. With STJ a lot of it has to do with the price--it's even more than other "upscale" lines with a younger market, like Theory or Tory Burch. They have a pretty good niche going now, and they're still picking "establishment" younger celebs like Kate Winslet and AJ. They might be aiming for the 35-and-over demographic but they probably won't get much younger than that.

Hmm this is interesting for me, because it seems as if my university dresses a little bit more formally than others.

We definitely do gym wear if we are going to work out after class. If you have an early morning class, girls will wear a longer tunic-y shirt and/or a sorority pull-over in this type of style (http://adamblockdesign.com/abd/2012/...st-half-zip-2/), leggings, and riding boots.

During the fall, I would say it is generally a J-crew type t-shirt/blouse, jeans, and flats/sandals. Slouchy knit tops are also popular (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/soprano-...esultback=4407).

In the winter it is pretty much the same adding a boyfriend cardigan and exchanging flats/sandals to riding boots. Button up shirts are also popular. Northfaces definitely make an appearance. Uggs however might be worn like to the library at night or inside the house to study, but they aren't for trekking around campus during the daytime.

In the summer, simple sundresses and sandals are common (http://www.francescascollections.com...ortby=ourPicks). Also ruffled sleeveless tops, shorts/skirt and sandals. On a casual Saturday, maybe a sorority tank and shorts.
