You won't get the same experience as girls joining an already established chapter, but do you realize that you'll be a founder of the chapter on your campus?? Do you realize how great of an honor, and how big of a deal that is?? You have a completely different experience because your name is one that will be forever tied to the founding of your chapter, on your campus. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and really hope that you were just upset about something else, and that this is NOT how you really feel about your sorority.

Honest question here: Is it really so bad to join because of the allure of letters/ritual? Not join JUST because of that, of course, but for it to be part of the attraction of Greek life? When I decided to go through recruitment, I did it because I was attracted to the idea of sisterhood and close friendships but also because I liked the idea of being connected to other people across generations and geography by this shared, secret ritual that only members of the organization know. So, I guess that I did join, in part, for the letters, handsigns, secret ritual, etc. Of course, I wouldn't have joined if I didn't feel the connection to my now-sisters that I did, either, and I did end up joining an org where I didn't care for the colors much but LOVED the people. I was also an officer, so I was definitely involved.

OP, you are getting the chance to join a sisterhood that is almost a century old and tens (hundreds?) of thousands of members strong, with a deep history and tradition. Why not embrace that for the amazing opportunity it is? Assuming you like your sisters well enough, why not enjoy your time together now, even if you won't get initiated until next year?

The allure of the letters is one thing. Thinking that your letter combination is ugly is quite another. She got more chances than most people and is still complaining. I don't feel sorry for her one bit.

I think it's obvious the OP is interested in a lettered sweatshirt.

Wow. Those expansion documents are quite interesting to read! Thanks for the link.

Well, believe me, I looked and looked and looked some more. Apparently they were going to announce to everyone which sorority got picked after formal rush (bid day is tonight. This was obviously scheduled before they knew the Jets would be in the AFC championships).

So either:

1) They gave the interest group a heads up as to who was picked and the OP is, regrettably, real.
2) This is someone who, for whatever reason, wants to scuttle PSS's chances and thinks this is the way to do it.

I don't make commitments on weekends in January. :) Here we go!

If the decision was JUST made, how can the OP be so impatient already?

It's weird, huh? I can't help but think there are ulterior motives here and this isn't the full story. Maybe she isn't really even involved in the colony and has some ulterior motive for torpedoing Phi Sig before they even announce who will colonize.

It looks like the only other recent Phi Sigma Sigma colony was at Sonoma State and they came out of a longer term local. Seems like Cornell is the only possibility especially given the back story with the original president pushing for her own sorority at a previous school.

And to the OP: Whatever your motives are posting here, you suck.

DeltaBetaBaby 01-23-2011 09:36 PM

As the OP said, she really had her heart set on one of the other two orgs, and was really disappointed by the choice of Phi Sig. My guess is that she is feeling the same as girls who go through formal rush and get their #2 choice when they really really wanted their #1.

TriDeltaSallie 01-23-2011 10:00 PM

While I think the OP made a mistake in airing all this here, I suspect she came here looking for advice and information from people in the know - other Greeks. And while it was unwise to speak specifically of a certain group online, I think if most of us are honest, there are things we don't like about different groups - even our own. I love Tri Delta as a package, but there are aspects of other groups I like better than my own. And there are things about other groups that I don't like at all. So she doesn't like the way the letters look. Fine. She's human. It's a mistake to air it here by name, but I guess I'm willing to cut her a bit of slack. If I were going to pick a sorority based on the way the letters look, I don't think I would have picked Tri Delta. Just sayin'. I know it is the total package, but I'm guessing the comment about the letters thing by the OP was more just a venting of a small part of something much bigger. She even said herself it was a stupid thing to be upset about.

How many of us might have said something stupid online about Greek related things when we were in school if Greek Chat existed at that time? It's easy to lose your head in the heat of the frustration and disappointment.

That's actually not what she said.

Her main gripe seems to be that this particular letter combination will deprive them of a "cute" nickname since Phi Sigma Kappa is already on their campus.

I know plenty of girls that said "OMG, I love DZ but I HATE those preppy colors." Or women that have said "I love SDT but our letters don't look that great in Greek because people are stupid and don't know the difference between an E and a Sigma." But they had nothing but praise for the group as a whole and the way they operate. No one had a problem with those posters.

This one is being all Veruca Salt and demanding that PSS HQ initiate them earlier than planned because of what class year they are and demanding that they get bigs and littles because if she doesn't have the exact same sorority experience that everyone else on her campus has, it will suck. In other words, she wants to be "rushed" by PSS HQ. Colonies don't work that way.

I think it's a troll. Noting she hasn't come back to defend herself is one reason and there are just too many confusing issues here. Maybe it's that president who's ticked she didn't win with DPhiE and wants to torpedo Phi Sig before it hits the ground. I think a transfer student would be more worried about the delays associated with the colony period than a fresh colony member would be. But since the expansion hasn't even STARTED yet, this whole thing sounds like a charade.

Also, you'd have to be more disgruntled than this to speak so ill of your sorority. We all have things we like, even prefer about other NPC sororities (check out the NPC love thread), but that doesn't mean we say it to strangers. ESPECIALLY as a colony member. I think colony members go in with so much enthusiasm that it would be months before the second thoughts and negativity start to surface.

violetpretty 01-24-2011 02:34 AM

I'm thinking a troll would come back and turn the thread into a trainwreck. At least that's what an interesting, fun troll would do.

Splash 01-24-2011 03:26 AM

IMHO

# of alleged trolls > # of trolls

There are many more dumb people out there than you think and pissing off randoms on an internet board isn't a high priority for many people.
