Deferred recruitment for a number of schools starts in early January.

Is that the case for Texas Tech? (ETA: Texas Tech has fall formal recruitment and COR in the Spring).

Deferred recruitment threads almost never get as wrecky as fall recruitment threads, it seems. Most of the time the deferred threads end up with a discussion between the pro- and anti-deferred camps here on GC.

Im just trying to get ahead of the game ok agzg. Theres nothing wrong with that.

Thanks, got confusing after a while :)

Darn, I should've QFP. What she originally said is, the way you all are typing to her makes her no longer really want to be in a sorority.

No matter how old one is, they need to learn when they need others more than others need them; and when it's time to just shut up and read. She imagined the meanness, anyway.

First, not everyone gets all touchy and twitchy at PNMs trying to get information, but posts like this will turn off the rest of us who might remain a little more cordial. So...cut that out.

Your age might hurt you. It's reality. It's happened on my campus, and the main reason (speaking for my chapter, at least, since I obviously am not privy to selection for the others) was that they were wary of having a 25 year old new member and were worried that she might not be able to handle 18 and 19 year olds telling her what to do all that well. And that's something to consider. Girls much younger and less experienced than yourself will be running the chapter you join, and you have to be ok with that.

If you are, you'll need to:
-Get recs. Search for recs+Texas Tec here to get more specific information as well as general threads on recs which will help you find them if you don't know many Greek alums.
-Practice conversation skills. You'll need to be confident and at ease talking to 18-22 year old strangers. Practice small talk whenever you can.
-Package yourself. Include on your resume your volunteer work, activities, honors, etc. This is a great place to brag on yourself because trust me, no one else will.
-Make sure you have a good GPA. This is going to be important no matter where you are.
-Look your best. Pick outfits that you feel confident in, are appropriate for the occasion (your recruitment counselors will help you with specifics, since what to wear when differs from campus to campus), and look nice. This doesn't have to mean expensive...what it does mean is outfits that fit you correctly, make you feel confident, and have no stains etc. Be well groomed (brush your hair and teeth, wear deodorant, make sure whatever make up you use is fresh...the basics).
-Have an open mind.

Transfer to Texas Tech; 22 years old with sophomore standing; worked with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, SPCA and Habitat for Humanity in Dallas. No, no one would have a clue.

Given that people very familiar with Texas Tech read and post here regularly, the world is that small.

Theres a few who havent exactly been the definition of cordial, so I'll respond how I feel they have responded to me. I'm not angry, upset, or touchy. Look ladies, my point is I know the age is a factor. I am completely realistic in the fact that it might be a strike against me and I understand it. Maybe I worded things wrong but all I was asking for were for some helpful information on how to over come the age factor, thats all. You all have been through this process before, I have not. You cant penalize me for that. I dont have any expectations on how I things work like ladylonghorn quoted

" But somehow I feel like your definition of "helpful ideas" is some OMG SUPER SECRET FOR SURE WAY TO MAKE ALL THE SORORITIES WANT YOU NO MATTER WHAT THEIR MEMBERSHIP SELECTION CRITERIA ARE BECAUSE YOU ARE A SUPER SPECIAL UNIQUE AND PERFECT SNOWFLAKE WHO EVERYONE SHOULD WANT."

That to me is a little snippy and uncalled for which is why I have responded the way I did to these posts. Age to me is not a huge deal. I dont mind associating myself with younger girls because at the end of the day we are all rushing a sorority for the same reasons. I will only be 22. Granted that is a large difference but Im not rushing a sorority for the age group of girls. That is not important to me. So thank you Alumiyum for answering my questions. I have an open mind and I have no expectations.

*FLOUNCE*

First off, no one was talking to you like you were an idiot, you Mark Twained yourself into that one.

Second, you might as well stop while you're...not so far behind.

SamanthaBay 11-29-2010 12:35 PM

Alphafrog you might not think so.

Ive got to be honest, after all this I'm just so discouraged on the entire situation and I am really turned off to the idea of even rushing a sorority anymore. So I guess youre right Alphafrog. Im done while Im AHEAD. If some of you are "such sorority ladies" I want no part.

agzg 11-29-2010 12:38 PM

HPRL?

Since we're being honest here and all, If you can't handle a messageboard, you can't handle rush in Texas. You're probably doing youself a favor if you can't handle the pressure.

PS..... I see we've mastered quotation marks, do you think apostrophes might be in the next lesson?

You haven't been on this board long enough to know whether you are missing someone's tongue-in-cheekness. A smarter way to handle that (and to handle recruitment) is to look for the POINT being conveyed instead of being stuck on how it was conveyed and trying to win an imagined battle. These ladies are the sorority members. You are a hopeful--one of many hopefuls who is practically begging for someone to pay attention to you.

Alumiyum was being polite but what she said was essentially said before. You were given links to other threads and at the age of 22 you should know already that how you talk and look matters. DUH. You will have a difficult life if you wait around for people to kiss your forehead before you grasp the point and move on.
