I go to Slippery Rock University PA and I'm a pike over there. Our main rival on campus is Sigma Tau Gamma. They are almost the oldest fraternity on campus and we're the youngest one on campus.

Well, on our campus, rivalries change from day to day, but in terms of recruitment, we always compete with Phi Sigma Sigma. In terms of actual battle, it's usually one of the locals http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Can you feel the love? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I see where ya'll are coming from. That would even make sense if the same conditions existed on our campus. Maybe I could use a back channel way to find out what their beef is. it probably didnt help matter much when they were really looing forward to beating us in intramurals (b-ball) and they led the firstr half and then we came from behind and beat them by 15 or 20 points (I dont honestly remember). So it might have been hard on them. They had a lot emotionally invested in the game, and we didnt.
But this existed from the first of the semester. We had a new member tell us about them hot-boxing him as a prospect. maybe you are riht, the rivalry thing doesnt have to be both ways. Maybe they wanted some tof the guys we signed or something. I dont think we wanted any of the guys who checkd them out or signed with them. I have a tendancy to be too analytical. I just think there has to be a reason. Ima 'spicious person by nature. Maybe they just dont like us. <me crying in my diet coke> Thanks 109, lifesaver |
Reading through some of the posts. I noticed there were no historically and predominately African American Sororities listed.I am a lady of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. which is the first sorority for collegiate black women founded in 1908. By anyway, on my campus there is little to no rivalry between the different minority greeks because its so few of us, we really have to stick together and be one unified body. Coming from a nationality where there is little unity within the race itself sometimes Greek Life is one of the few places where you see African-Americans treating each other like brothers and sisters. I do have a question for the more NPC and IFC Greek Orgs- Why do you rival against each other, or in other words what purpose does it really serve?

AKACubana-
I think the rivalaries mentioned, maybe with one or two exceptions were friendly. Rivarlies, not just Greek ones, serve many purposes. One is that friendly competetion feels good, and is healthy, if one doesn't get too involved in it. It can also lead to creative things like seeing who can get the most money for charity. As far as rush, maybe who can bring the most good guys into the greek world. That way you win if you win, but if you loose, everybody wins overall cuz you just did a really good thing. Rivalries are tough to pin down for us...it depends on what category you are talking about. For my chapter - PIKE at UWG - our rivalries can be split into athletic, campus involvement, sorority preference/social, rush, etc. Depending on the category, we almost have a different rival for each one. For athletics its probably Kappa Sig & Chi Phi; for campus involv. its Pi Kappa; for sorority/socials its probably KA & Chi Phi; for rush its Chi Phi. However, my chapter is newly recolonized after a 5 year absence and many of the old rivalries have had a chance to die down. Back in the day, Chi Phi was our overall biggest rival in nearling everything. Sigma Nu would challenge in athletics every now and then, and Teke just seemed like they were always out to get us even though they had no chance of competing against us.
Rivalries change over the years, especially if your school is big on improving Greek Unity and Cooperation. |

The year I went through rush the big rival for us (Alpha Gam) in membership was Phi Mu and this past year it was Phi Mu and Alpha Delta Pi. Which is weird. But things change from year to year.

well I did some research and after askingsome of our IFC officers and our chapter president it apparently has something to do with rush.
Apparently this summer at orientation (a big rush time for all greeks) they felt thatwe were dirty rushing. But since they are new to campus they dont understand that at freshamn orientation it is really, REALLY compedative. It actually has the mentality of "all's fair." We along with the other fraternities are very aggressive when it comes to recruitment. We understand that if you wait till someone approaces your table, your never gonna sign anybody. We are never behind our table, but are in front of it, and inthe crowd mingeling, and meeting people. We also help freshmen move into the dorms. (guys and girls) And we also have about half our chapeter volunteer at Fish camp. NONE of that is a violation of IFC recruitment policy. We are just active and involved and put ourselves inplaces where we'll come in contact with prospects. They are also upset because most all of the "blue chip" guys that went through formal rush this fall and spring signed with us. Which I am sure added insult to injury. We used to be really bad rushers many years ago. We finally had the fortune to get our stuff in order and have about two years where we recruited recruiters and had a great base, which we built on. In the span of 2 years went from 22 members to a projected 72 after this summer, which will make us the biggest. I guess everybody's got to have a beef with the biggest, or what is percieved as the most powerful. We busted our butts and I am not ashamed of it. they will get the hang of it, but NOBODY showd up at our doorstep with 50 guys ready to sign bids. We worked our tails off for each one.
