If I'm going to be honest about it, I sorta/kinda look down on people who bring any sort of food into a movie - and it's not just a "rich guy/poor guy" thing, there's also things like "duder doesn't understand market economics" and all that.

Except for booze - bringing booze into a theater (presuming they don't already serve) is always totally fine.

And it's the same thing as bringing any sort of food into a movie.

I work at a movie theater, so I find all sorts of crazy stuff when we clean up after the show. I think the most elaborate meal anyone's brought in was carryout from Bob Evans: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy etc...it was quite elaborate. No idea how they managed to sneak that one past us! I've also found empty wine bottles, beer cans, pizza boxes, chinese takeout...the list goes on and on

Honestly though, I don't mind people bringing in outside food given prices these days, as long as it's not loud or strong-smelling (people get super upset about those). My theater doesn't actually have a specific policy against it, but since it's not widely known people go to great lengths to conceal all sorts of food when they come in. It's pretty entertaining.

RIGHT!!

cheergreek: I respect your opinion. :) However, as loud as the sound gets in the theaters, no one can hear my bag opening

It's just that it's the smell too.

If I want to eat a meal during my movie, I'll get a DVD.

It's their theatre, their rules. No outside food is hardly unreasonable.

My money, my decision to smuggle outside food if I'm hungry.

I can't believe I'm saying this to you of all people, but that was kind of the joke.

I don't think their rules are only about making money either. Isn't it against public health code to bring outside food into an establishment that prepares and serves food itself? I thought there were rules about that, beyond the theaters just wanting to make big bucks on concessions.

I do think they rip you off totally. I often spend more on the concessions for me and the kids than the tickets themselves, which seems silly to me. I do see people bring in brown lunch bugs, get a bucket of popcorn and fill the kids lunch bags with popcorn and go up to get enough free refills that they all eat lots of popcorn off of one small bag. My kids always want to get a medium popcorn and I don't let them. There are free refills, why buy bigger than a small? If they are so into the movie they don't want to miss anything, I don't mind going and getting the refills for them.

Really? All the theaters around here don't give refills for anything but a large.

The theater near my apt. also offers free refills. But, like your kids I don't want to miss any of the movie. If the movie isn't very good then yeah, I'll refill it.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, really. I don't bring outside meals into the movie because it's against their rules, plus, I'd rather just eat what's provided. As for it being "tacky" and "low class", that's kind of judging the person rather than the person's actions, so, I wouldn't necessarily say all of that. If I was out with someone and they brought in their own food, I wouldn't care. If they clowned, and/or argued, and/or caused a scene after being stopped, and asked not to bring in their own food, then I would have issues with that and would very much so agree with that as being "tacky" and "low class".

that's how i feel - bring what you want, if at all, but know that if the owners of the theater (or ushers, whoever) shut you down, you have no right to put up a fight.
