Here's your answer, sweetie. No, there is no national monitoring system. There is no national clearing house. No one goes through the list of girls who've signed up for recruitment and checks each one's background.

There IS, however, a method known as sponsorship. A sorority alumna from the PNM's hometown who personally knows her sends a rec to the chapter. Or the chapter requests one from their alumnae in that town.

I have also seen advisors pick up the phone and call a sorority at the other school and ask politely if the PNM was a member there or at any other sorority on campus. It only took a call or two...and that was back before internet or cell phones.

I'm sure people have gotten away with joining and initiating two different groups. But very few do.;)

Finally an answer! Thanks :)

Just interested 09-07-2009 07:23 PM

In the situation of my story. The 1st chapter required a reference. It was the reference writer who called her National Panhellenic representative. The reference was for a young lady she had known since birth but did not live in the same state. She did however travel to 1st State U for the initiation. Young Lady knew very well what she was doing. She dodged all questions regarding her time at 2nd State U. Since reference writer lived 1000 miles away and no longer saw family it was easy.

The other school was in a part of the country where I believe references are not required or if they are she got them from people who didn't know her history. it was very slick but very upsetting to long time family friend.

Gosh, I bet so. I would be so ticked and hurt by any young woman who did this to me. In my mind, any reference I write means I am endorsing her/vouching for her/willing to say she is my sister. If I did that for a girl, and she turned her back on my gesture and threw away the opportunity she was given......well, let's just say my manners are keeping me from being more explicit!

Really? Only people who would wonder this would be somebody who is considering breaking their sacred oath. I would hope that the amount of people that is willing to do so would be very small.

How does NPC find out if a woman was already a member of another chapter previously?

There is a girl in my dorm who transferred from NC State and was initiated into a sorority not here. She wants to rush again and get into a sorority here.

How do they find this out exactly? I know that you can only be in 1.

THANKS!!!!!!! :)

Well just to let everyone know she did not go to NC State previously, that was a code name :) :)

But she was, however, initiated into a chapter we don't have here.

He He yeah, I had heard of how posting too much true or specific info about your recruitment could hurt you in recruitment

I get what you're saying here even though NC State honestly was a code name.

I don't know enough about Greek life considering I'm not currently a member of anything. I'm not positive I'm going through recruitment anymore.

The lady, she doth protest too much.

Which makes this post all the more suspicious...

I'm sort of worried about going through recruitment this fall. The reason I'm so nervous aside from normal reasons is :: I'm a legacy to multiple chapters.

All of these chapters are on my campus! I'm nervous about how this will play out within Rush. Will sororities think it's weird/intimidating?

I am smart, attractive and super friendly. I don't see why I would not do well in recruitment but my family is telling me I should not put down all my legacies and pick 2 and just rush those 2 really hard. But how would I even begin to pick without knowing them? And I think you have to visit them all anyways.....Right?

I'm attending Appalachian State University

What do you all think?

Why wouldn't you list all of your legacy affiliations, or want to visit all of the chapters? I am confused by both of these posts. Not accusing, but suspicious. Why would you care so much what someone is planning to do?

Okay, that one had nothing to do with you. The Office is just amazing.

Geez, you grill out with your family for the holiday and look what you miss.

In short, there's no huge database of every girl who has ever been initiated into an NPC sorority, but in the age of Facebook/MySpace/etc, the sorority world is VERY small.

Even if you aren't immediately found out, it will typically come to light at some point that you were intiated elsewhere.

I believe that most NPCs will terminate the memberships of women who are found to have been members of other groups.

It also makes you look shady when you get caught.

So it's not something I recommend people trying to get away with.

PhiMuForever 09-08-2009 12:36 AM

She just wanted her question answered and here is what I think:

NO there is no definite way of knowing however, I'm sure whoever it is will be found out. IF you know, then I'm sure more people are going to end up knowing and it could spread around campus.

Also, If she joins one and posts that she is in one on her profile on facebook, myspace or whatever & the other sorority sees it... well, you get the picture!

Hope this actually does help you/your friend!

violetpretty 09-08-2009 08:16 AM

No, there is no NPC database.

But really, how could one get away with it? "The girl in your dorm" from NC State would have to defriend all of her NC State friends on facebook plus cease all communications with anyone who knew of her affiliation at NC State. Or, just delete everything about her new sorority on her fb page at App. People talk. She really won't get away with it.

Ask "the girl in your dorm" if she'd rather have membership in 0 or 1 sororities. Because those are her choices, eventually.

Barbie's_Rush 09-08-2009 11:30 AM

So the KD, Phi Mu, Alpha Phi and AOPi houses at Appalachian just need to check with the Zeta, DG, Pi Phi and Tri-Delt chapters at North Carolina State about any transfers coming through recruitment from that school. Since there are sorority members from both of these schools on Greekchat, I don't think this will be much of a problem at all. Good luck to the "girl in your dorm."

If she is speaking for herself, she will get caught. Her family SHOULD say something, since they all know that this is not right. And I would think it would be a great disrespect to them to try to play the system that they all played by, and probably respect, since there are so many different groups you are legacy to.

On the other hand, if there is a "girl from my dorm", I'm sure she is telling all her family about it, (the whole internet knows, why not mom and sis?). And one of them should step up and speak up about it.

lol....:)

This happened at another NC school a couple years ago. The girl was busted by round two. And now thanks to Greek Chat so is "the girl from her dorm" too.

Hello all! Recruitment orientation is tomorrow, I'm now excited... I talked with my family a lot about it all tonight and despite what everyone on here thinks, I think it's going to be a good experience for me. I am just going with the flow to see how it all goes. Wish me luck! :)
