BUCUTIE02: My boyfriend lives in River Oaks; in the same house his whole life. Do you kinda know where that is? How do you like U of H? I sooo want to live in Houston, whenever I get out of school http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
I am not really familiar with the area you are from. Houston is just too big! But I love it.

Wearing letters does seem to vary from place to place. I know that we are only supposed to let women we are very involved with wear our letters . . .

I can't imagine where a Sorority's letters at all, involved or not, or what guy would want to.

KA Southern Belle sounda a lot like a little Sister/starduster organization . . . we are not allowed by Constituion to have little sisters. Its considered degrading to women . . . you have your own groups to join, why would you want to be an auxillary to ours?

This being said, if we weren't consititionally bound I am sure many a Chapter would LOVE to have a little sister organization http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif.

AXO Alum 03-09-2001 09:52 AM

Geez -- I am really somewhat surprised at some of these responses. I do not want anyone wearing AXO letters who is not a sister. Event tees are different since they aren't "letters" -- by letters I mean the really nice double stitched kind you buy (not an event tee that says AXO and TKE).

Granted, the homeless thing is another issue -- especially since I know from working with the Salvation Army that people do end up with letters. They really need clothes to wear and I'm not going to make anything of it if I were to ever see it.

As far as the high school thing goes...nuh uh! No way -- I don't care if every woman in your family since 1885 was an Alpha Chi....until you get that bid and you are accepted as a new member, then keep your hands off!

Our nationals also reserve the crest and badge to initiated members only....HOWEVER...I know most of our new member classes at the chapter I advise decide for themselves not to wear letters until they are initiated. I think it means so much more to them.

Hey TxTechChiO- wow, i just realized i have been writing your name wrong- http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif i have been writing "TexasTechChiO"- sorry about that!!
Anyway, yes i know where River Oaks is at, and i do agree with you that Houston is way too big. I guess when you have lived here forever you kind of get familiar with most of the area! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I live with my parents as well right now. U of H is going pretty good. I dont really enjoy the drive down there everday, but i do think the people there are a lot more friendlier and down to earth! How is SFA?

Our Southern Belles arent really a little sister organization. Alot of chapters do assign the Belles to a little/big brother or whatever. The belles are just like sweethearts, so its not so much like little sisters. We take 1 woman from each sorority every year and make her a Belle, so you wind up with 10 or 13 Belles, then we have a Rose. She is the actual "sweetheart" of the chapter I guess if you had to put a title on it.
Its good to have Belles. We take alot of pride in these girls and their respective chapters. The Belles know that if they ever need anything we will come runnin.
bucutie- you are from houston and you have never heard of Kappa Alpha? I guess Houston's chapter is shut down, KA is huge in Texas.

*******Got off the subject there but I have a letter wearing story too. I was downtown one morning were my university is and a older gentleman passed me on the street. He had on a jacket that looked like it was from the 70's and it had KA on the front. Dumbfounded for a second I tourned around and went to greet this brother. When I stopped him I said "How are you doin? Are you a KA?" He looked at me funny and I pointed to his jacket. He looked down and said "Oh, Kentucky Association? Yes I am a member." I laughed and told him I was a member too and we parted ways. This man was homeless and I didnt realize this until further trips downtown. I go downtown in the mornins to eat at the Elks lodge. Wooohoo. Good food and alot of my Masonic brothers eat there. Anyway, no this man wasnt a KA but actually, It made me feel good that the letters I earned are keeping him warm at night. Sounds like a good cause to me.

****Random for the sake of Randomness.......I just realized that I made senior member. I'm out for world domination now. Hey Mr. Hammell, how about sendin me some of that moderator action???? I could moderate a Beer directory or somethin.

I realized I've probably added to non Chi Omega's wearing Chi Omega letters (oops). My pledge semester, which was three years ago, Panhellenic had extra Recruitment shirts with the Theme and the specifically each sorority's letters on the front right hand corner.
They were begging to give them away, and since I didn't own a t-shirt with Chi Omega letters on it yet (other than my bid-day shirt) I snagged up three for myself and two pledge sisters.
Well, they'd already gotten their own so I kept the other two. I decided to give one to my mother because she likes to wear t-shirts every now and then...and one to my sister in middle school for her to have should she want to every wear as pajamas. LOL
Maybe I did the wrong thing, but they're family and I know they won't be dishonorablly displaying my letters. And because the shirt had the other three sorority's letters on it too...I don't think it should be a big deal.
So, I guess that's my point. I think it should be okay for family to wear lettered shirts only if they do it respectfully.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, what a great way to enhance relations with sororities on campus! I would be glad to hear some details, if they are not secret on how this system works, how you pick, how you make it official etc. For example do you choose junior members of their organizations? Please email me privately if you don't want to post.

No problem. We have our last formal of the year and it is called Old South. Its a huge event, we have stuff going on all week and then we have formal for 2 days usually in a diffrent town. KA's are known as southern gentlemen so you can imagine how the ladies get treated. Right before Old South, during meeting, we elect a new Rose. Everyone submits a ballot of who they think should be Rose. (Note: The rose is usually a previous southern belle) Once we have the Rose picked, we start picking Southern Belles. Each member submits a list of the 1 girl in each sorority they think would be a good Belle. Whoever recievest the most nominations from that sorority gets the Belle for that year. Before we leave for Old South, we have a dinner called Wine and Cheese. This is for all the brothers and their dates to Old South. The ladies all get flowers and recieve their formal invitation to Old South. Once we have that done, we give out the awards for the year, (best athelete, jackass of the year , that kinda stuff Note:I am ahead in points for jackass of the year) and then we announce the Rose. She gets flowers and our letters and a big plaque. We then announce all the Belles, and they get the same. Then we all get on one knee and sing to the ladies. Good stuff.

KABillyMac,
yep im from houston and had never heard of KA. I might have heard about the fraternity a long time ago or something but didnt pay any attention to it. Plus, even if i had heard of it before i never knew about southern belles. To be perfectly honest with you, i dont know if my school has KA or not. I dont really pay any attention to fraternities at the moment. I see guys wearing tshirts all the time, but they are all mainly Sigma Chi and Sigma Nu. I used to go to baylor and i dont think they had a chapter there- or atleast i never knew or heard of one.

KSig RC 03-12-2001 01:07 AM

Some guys end up w/ sorority date party/house party t-shirts here, as they were the dates and that's part of the deal; i'd guess that only the chapters that don't worry about 'party shirts' do that though - i've never run into a non-brother wearing letters, though i'm sure it'd be weird . . .

As far as little brothers/big brothers, a few of the sororities here have honorary 'big brother' status, whereby the guy sort of looks after the pledge/new member, takes her around and introduces her to people to make her feel more integrated into the greek system, in addition to what the big sis etc would do. it's pretty cool; i'm doing it for a girl this semester as a favor to a friend (her big sis), and it's really cool to see her hanging out with some of the guys and girls i've introduced her to, and to see her having fun in those sometimes-awkward 'all-greek' situations. we don't do sister organizations (james covered that earlier), but this works out for some sororities in terms of the social scene like that.

TxTechChiO 03-12-2001 01:15 AM

KABillyMac: I didn't know that in some schools, Belles are only from Sororities. At my school, you don't have to be Greek to be a Belle. I think it's a great for both greeks and non-greeks. That way, your friends have chances to meet people outside the greek system, and vice-versa. Since you have given such kudos to Belles, I decided to start another post regarding Frat's "Little Sisters", or as only the fortunate can say.... Southern Belles. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

In Phi Delta Theta, only family members and wives can wear our letters....

Katey Alpha Gam 03-15-2001 12:40 AM

I HATE seeing non-greeks in letters. Those are reserved for US, we are the ones who have worked to wear them. However, in the instance of the girl who's sister died and like my friends who died and their parents (they were brother and sister; a Delta Chi and AXO) wear their letters, that is different and ok, because you know what it means and you are carrying on their legacy, but to have a complete moron wearing your letters that have no idea what they are or what it means to wear them. Our letters actually were picked to mean something that only we know about and it is what we strive to be EVERYDAY. I am also ok with parents wearing shirts b/c they are why you are who you are and sometimes why you fit where you do. But, like my mom has letters I got her and when she wears them, her friends are like "A backwards seven triangle?? I don't get it??" I don't want someone like that wearing my letters if they don't know why there are what they are. My sister-mothers mom died and she was going to give me her letters for my mom but her aunt took them to goodwill. I HATE the idea of someone random wearing them at so many levels!! But, and this is weird, my friend was a swimmer and her swim team coach knew a guy who did screenprinting and they all got XO pajama pants from him that the chapter never picked up!! So all of her swim team was wearing letters. I tried to explain why that wasn't cool but she got pissed at me and told me to chill out!! I think your letters belong to you and only you and aside from extenuating circumstances, DON'T WEAR THEM!!!!

TxTech,
I agree with you totally. My girlfriend is an AOPi from W.Ky U. and now she is here at E.KY. U. and she doesnt affiliate. She does more for our chapter than most of the girlfriends do and she is lavaliered (sp?) but she is not elligible to be a belle so I think its crap too. Maybe I'll try to get that changed in our by-laws when we get back to meeting.
