Painful Process
 

Let me begin by saying that while I am no stranger to a competitive and often heartbreaking Greek system (I pledged at Ole Miss), I have not before been exposed so intimately to the sorority side of things. Now that I have, I am so happy it is about to be over. A few days ago, I dreaded Bid Day, for it looked as if my daughter would be spending it alone while her new dorm friends were heading to their new affiliations dressed in white. Now it looks as though things will work out perfectly...but we learned alot along the way.
My chief purpose here is to impress upon any future readers of this site the huge challenge that is faced by PNM's who are not Georgia residents. More specifically, PNM's who don't have high school connections working for them on the inside of at least one sorority. I know that it's like that at many schools, but the phenomenon will become exponentially exaggerated at UGA as it becomes more and more a school whose admission is exclusive to Georgia residents (thanks to Hope Scholarship). Getting into UGA from out of state is a monumental accomplishment. Pledging a sorority of your choosing from out of state is no less than a miracle.
Congratulations to all of your girls who pledge today. Please impress upon them in your conversations with them over the next few weeks how important it is that they embrace those girls who didn't get an invitation today. These young ladies are likely victims of a numbers game and most of them, unfortunately, couldn't have changed the results of this process regardless of what they did differently.

I hear you doting dad! Good luck to your daughter this afternoon. We were in the same situation a couple of years ago. Being out of state can be hard when it seems like everyone else has their high school connections - both on the inside and having close friends going through the recruitment process along with you.
On the other hand - maybe there is one advantage to being out of state. It is much easier to keep an open mind and not get caught up in the "sidewalk" talk.

The pictures at Georgia are great - you are so lucky to have them. In looking at the preference pictures, I was surprised at the multitude of colors and styles - Georgia must have an enlightened view of preference dress. At Auburn, my daughter said there were only a handful of girls at preference that were not wearing a dark colored dress.

This is great. Kudos to you for being there for your daughter, regardless of the outcome. You seem to have a level head about the whole process.

To me, a lot of those dresses don't look any different than all the sundresses they were wearing on the other days. Most places they seem to bump it up a notch for pref and wear semiformal type dresses (like the plethora of choices at White House Black Market, for instance....which is why you probably see so much black).

I think that the newspaper may have mislabeled these photos. It didn't look like pref to me. Granted, I wasn't on campus for pref this year, but it looked more like a round 3 / day 2 wardrobe.

I think you're right. A lot of my daughter's friends at UGA wore their homecoming dresses from senior year for pref, since our HS girls tend to wear a cocktail style dress for homecoming rather than a long gown. Some of the girls in those pictures were wearing tank tops and skirts.

I didn't think that was pref either, because my daughter told me she decided to wear pale pink, because most girls were in black and pearls. My independent sole.

I called the greek life office and found out the final quota for UGA was 54 for undergrads and 6 for upperclassmen.

You mean in real life? Because UGA doesn't tend to post them at Greek Life on the web.
