I think Violet & KnightShadow pretty well covered my HS years ... Class of 2002 was a good time.

ooh ooh, can an old person play? In 1972 we wore long straight hair, peace sign necklaces, vertical striped bell bottom hip huggers, Minnetonka moccasins with fringe on them (ankle high booties) and leather jackets with 6" of fringed leather on the sleeves, middle and bottom. Our prom dresses were empire waist often satin with Venice lace over the bodice and sleeves(many were home-made, hey, we all had to take sewing in Home Ec).
In 1969 (my freshman year) we still had teased up bouffant hair, black eyeliner, white lipstick (Yardley of London), and we had to wear dresses to class. Many dresses were short, psychodelic colorful patterns. Only in 1971 did they abandon the dress rule and let us wear "pantsuits" matching tops and bottoms. Bobbie Brooks was a brand sold at nice dept. stores. Now it's at Dollar General. lol. |

I rocked the shit out of some JNCOs circa 1998. |
I'm with you Army Wife. Here are the fashions from the late 70s...
The disco era was moving into Punk Rock. Talk about a juxtaposition! Went from Afros/Dorothy Hammil cuts to Feathered bangs (I wore the afro for two years, then tried the feathered bangs that didn't work with curly hair). Calvin Klein, Jordache and Brittania Jeans – very tight. Sometimes they zipped at the ankles Painter Pants (reincarnated later as Cargo Pants) Blue Jean overalls Jumpsuits Shiny tops with wide lapels (Qiana knit) Wrap Dresses (particularly Diane Von Furstenburg) Gunne Sax Dresses Gauchos with Dingo Boots (I recall this was reincarnated too) “Bow” Blouses and Cowl-neck sweaters Annie Hall-style dresses with big shoulder pads Bomber Jackets, Down Jackets/Vests Tall Platforms Cork Shoes, Candies Heels, Dr. Scholl’s Top Siders and Rugby Shirts on the preppy-types Crinkled Cloth (my mother always tried to iron out the wrinkles) Very Big Hoop Earrings and Mood Rings Pom Pom socks and Tube Socks Lots of makeup and overly plucked eyebrows Bonne Bell Lipsmackers in 7-up flavor |
And I forgot about the big teased hair look as well.
Curly perms and you could tell whose perm was fresh. High top fades Names/designs cut into the fades Asymmetrical haircuts hoop earrings with your name or initial sweater vests dresses with wide lapels with soutache dressing ontop (looked like the band uniforms) rompers big hair bows |
2002-2006.
I feel like there was a different shoe trend every year.... - Freshmen year there was the Steve Madden gym shoe platforms... although those actually started in 8th grade at my school...i hope someone knows what i'm talking about, i can't find a picture!! - Sophomore year came the Birkenstocks - Junior year at my school those plain but brightly colored New Balances & Saucony's became really popular for some reason - I'm can't think of what the shoe trend was senior year.... - Northfaces blew up during this time - I remember thinking track jackets were really cool like sophomore year - Those super glittery purses/bags that were just covered in sequins - Everyone at my high school used pre-wrap, that stuff you use in like bandaging, as headbands when they were wearing a pony tail to keep stray hairs in place - Old Navy flip flops, although thats still popular... - Side bangs!! - Abercrombie & Hollister polos i know there's tons more but i cant think of any... |
I was in hs from 1990-1994-
And the things that were popular that I remember were -- Hypercolor t-shirts (and the matching socks!) -- Dooney and Bourke All Weather Leather Purses -- Birkenstocks -- Anything Ralph Lauren |

*I forgot what it was called, but it's those jeans where the bottoms looked like the threading was coming off (i don't wanna say fringe...forgot what's its called) *Flare jeans were the rage! No bootcut, no straightleg, it had to be low-rise flare jeans. *It was popular here to have not bangs, but 2 little pieces of hair hanging down. You had to have a part in the middle, and then take 2 little pieces from each side of the part and right where your forehead is. My mom said it looked like we had antennas. *K-Swiss *Shirts with the sayings on them *Velour sweatpants. You had to had the jacket and the pants that matched, and they had to be tightly fitted. *gym/cheer type shorts with the tops folded down. You had to be able to see the white band, and the tag. lol *Puka shells for the guys *Jansport backpacks. |

And who could forget soffee shorts? I still have mine! |
An even older person here! 1966-1970 - Bobbie Brooks cardigan sweaters with matching A-line skirts and knee socks.....similar outfits by John Meyer...Ladybug blouses with round "Peter Pan" collars in cute prints, with matching skirts....boys wore blue jeans rolled up at the ankle, with buttoned shirts...T shirts were strictly underwear...black horn-rimmed glasses. The rich girls were beginning to get contacts.
And VERY few kids had a car. Only the rich ones, or the poor ones who could work on it themselves.:p |
Wow, sounds like some fashion trends vary wildly from region to region, because I've never heard of some of the things y'all from 93-97 are talking about (Duck Heads?).
Popular at my high school '92-'96 (mostly the later years because I can't remember the early): - North Face ski jackets and vests - Patagonia fleece pullovers - Anything from the Gap - v-neck sweaters, jeans, khakis, etc. - Footwear: K-Swiss, Doc Martin, Tretorns, Teva - Lacrosse wear - it was a popular sport at my school, and we all (boys and girls teams) had matching pullover jackets and pants. But any tshirt with "LAX" or whatnot was common. - Letterman jackets - Jean and khaki shorts - Birkenstocks year-round - with socks in cold weather - Flannel pajama bottoms - these weren't worn to school, but everyone had them. We DID have a dance with a sleepwear theme one year. - Camo pants - most people didn't wear them, but I do remember several guys that had them. - Backpacks: Eddie Bauer, North Face, Jansport or one of the multi-colored Italian bags some kids have (wish I could find a photo of one) My high school was just as trend-conscious as the next, but I guess up here in the Northwest the popular "style" was (and still is sometimes) outdoorsy-preppy. |
Ksuviolet, knight_shadow and epchick definitely gave me some nostalgia as I went to HS from 98-02. Let me add a few, which may or may not be NY-specific:
-wearing loud-print pajama pants as regular pants (kind of like how people wear scrubs?) Old Navy was THE spot for these. I had some red ones with white and blue stars. Bonus points if worn with uptowns/air force ones, k-swiss, or saucony. -chinese chopsticks (for the hair) -plastic jewels for the face (in particular the middle of the forehead or corners of the eyes) -winter coats like shearlings, bubble jackets (bear, north face) and the swishy ones too (north face makes them too but ones by columbia were a close second) -air force ones in assorted colors (white on white are the official spring/summer sneaker-thats how you know it was on-stores didn't really sell white uptowns in the winter). Black on black were for the winter, but sometimes unnacceptable as they resembeled orthepedic shoes. -coach belts with the coach tag (in assorted colors to match... Everything) colorful belts in general were the poo, you could buy them for 2 dollars on any street corner. -the "reverse" denim look (the color of if you wore your jeans inside out). The black version of these were the win. Regular black jeans were no longer acceptable after this. -black suede timbs -flat twists were somewhat popular. My mother hated doing them cause she said "everyone wore them, do something different" (she was a hairdresser). Microbraids were in too. -bandana/triangle tops -headbands with bandana fabric attached (someone tell me they know what I'm talkin about) -denim skorts. Need I say more? -ankle-length skirts with splits on both sides -i think k_s mentioned the matchy-matchy style: I was all over this. Old Navy actually had some street cred and made this easy-they always had cool socks to match shirts. I remember this pink striped long sleeved shirt that had matching socks. The trick was finding a way to make sure the socks were noticed. -racing-car-style jackets (with huge obnoxious logos and brands like Tide, Frosted Flakes, etc on them). There were also these shitty leather jackets that had "extasy" written on them. Hated them. -jansports with all those little zipper pull strings (the more you had, the cooler you were. You were not to buy them, you had to jack them from someone else's jansport. I always got got. I think the trick was to burn the edges with a lighter so unknotting them were harder. Actually, this was more a junior high thing, but I remember it in HS too) -victoria secret's pear glace was one of THE scents to wear. It was the love spell of yesteryear-everyone wore it and you knew the smell instantly. Others included Cool Water, Perry Ellis 360, CK1, I wanna say Burberry, tommy girl. And remember Calgon body spray? Our locker room always smelled like this! -ankle socks with the colored cotton ball on the back (though it was just as ok to not have the cotton ball) -acrylic tips in french manicure style, but in the color of whatever your outfit was. White one day, lavender the next. It was always on. I could go on and on. Damn those were good times. |

I totally remember the polos...I had imitation ones from old navy! Northfaces were not as huge in Florida, but track like jackets were. The Old Navy flip flops were huge, and they still are! I remember some wearing some ugly sweater tank tops..I don't know what I was thinking! lol! |

Hypercolor! That's what they were called. I remember girls with one color on their butts and another on the rest of their clothes after sitting in class for an hour...classy! My sister's senior class t-shirt included a phrase in hypercolor, but the only problem is that it was mispelled!! At my school, no would would be caught dead with a Jansport backpack...we all had Eastpak! |
