"Oh, I have friends in that sorority. Who do you know that's an ABC?"
"My daughter. She gave me this hat for Father's Day." "Oh how sweet." or "Excuse me, Grandpa. Get those letters off your head NOW. I KNOW you're not in a sorority!" (Followed by large scuffle in which said hat is ripped to shreds, Grandpa gets stitches in the scratches down his face and you get arrested for assaulting the husband of your local chapter's advisor. He deserved it, the perp.) The second would be amazing to watch.. in a I can't look away from the train wreck kind of way. |
Fantastic isn't condescending. She just doesn't want to look like an ass and go to jail.

And what is with all this talk about jail? These people never went to jail. The cops were never called. Besides, I find it ironic that so many talk about how this creates a poor reputation of an organization when I have seen members of certain sororities and fraternities (and I'm not only talking about NPHC either) do far worse at parties and the like. None of you are saints.:) |

The "assessment" was undoubtedly based on your post. That is what people do here - they read your post, and respond based on that post. It doesn't require personal knowledge of the poster. I'm sorry that you feel you were misunderstood - I too thought that your posting of those incidents was a de facto endorsement. Am I correct in my interpretation of your post above - that you do NOT approve of it? As to the "none of you are saints" - how deeply ironic it is that you are calling out a GCer because "she doesn't know me" and yet you are willing to go off on a totally unrelated non sequiter tangent and imply that "you" (meaning us) have no right to comment on actions that would reflect poorly, and perhaps be illegal, because you have seen others do actions which also reflect badly? You don't know US, do you? The one has nothing to do with the other. This thread is specifically addressed to one incident. It is not a blanket indictment of GLOs, be they NPC, NPHC, or some other group. When faced with the possible misappropriation of your letters, IMHO one should ask what action could be taken which would be most in keeping with the tenets of the GLO? How can you best embody the creed/symphony/principles of those letters? The letters themselves are not nearly as important as is the way they are brought to life through your actions while representing them. That holds true for all GLOs, and covers a multitude of situations. |

As to whether we are saints or not, you don't know us, so by your own prior statement you are not in a position to make a judgment about us. Again, whether or not we are perfect has no bearing on what we are posting about here. Glass houses and all . . . if you had to be perfect to have an opinion this would be a dead network. Oh - and if I'm going to post a really snarky statement about everyone here, I'm going to run spell check so I don't look like an idiot. Smilie time! :D :( :) :o To get us back on topic - what is your opinion of the incidents you witnessed? Were the people justified? |

If I posted a snarky comment... it was justified, and it was in response to other snarky comments. Not to mention the fact that it takes more than a typo to make someone look like an idiot. Nice try though. As for my comment about people not being saints, I can indeed say that with authority. No one in the world is a saint. However, no one on here can say what someone else does realize or does not realize. Her comment was OOL. As for whether they were justified... in a way I feel they were. No, I dont advocate violence, but I think when you go through a great deal to wear those letters (and we do) it is beyond annoying to see someone else wearing them who does not deserve to do so. It's an insult. Plain and simple. As I said previously, I will call them out, but I won't put my hands on them. |
The issue is our International HQ of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has instructed our membership as to appropriate use of our symbols, badges and crest, including mottos, etc. So it is important at least from my Sorority's stance that as members we comply to the International goals. Our documentary items are trademarked and our vendors have to pay licensing fees to sell appropriate items.
I also think that some members think that items can be sold anywhere, either by donation bags, or by eBay... As far as clothing, SOME items I would really care about--like seeing my linesisters' jackets--especially these days. But, if I saw an old man wearing one of my hats, I really would care less. And I have seen all kinds of people wearing my Sorority's paraphernalia with the trademark insignias knowing they are definitely not members--in fact, they look homeless... And what do I do... Walk on by... What can you do? Let it go... Because really, my Sorority's ideals, concepts and victory's heights are in my heart and I stand as an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. regardless of where I am... So, Good! If an old homeless transgendered man wears my stuff, maybe it's my service to the community... LOL... |
