Hands down, my favorite quote of the past few days!! Amen. :p

My daughter told me that bids are announced at 7 p.m. tonight Eastern time??

She is a sophomore who did not get a bid when she rushed as a freshman.
We are both nervous for tonight!! Fortunately she says she will be "Ok" without a bid (as long as we pay for a super-nice apartment next year :)), but she would "love" her 2nd choice sorority and it would be "amazing amazing" if she got her #1. (She only listed two of her three houses from 3 party).

Never mind, my D just texted me that you all are right, it's 5:30, not 7 p.m. The B'ton time zone is an hour ahead of me, so this means I will be ducking out of a work meeting to take her call!

Nebraska has not had a bed quota in a long time. At least in the late 90s they did not. When I was in a chapter there in the 2000s, all PNMs who 'played fair' by attending all parties they were invited to and listing all of the chapters they preffed, were guaranteed a spot ( barring all weird unforseen circumstances like the PNM being in a a drug bust post pref party). Greek affairs would set a campus total based on the number of pref cards signed, each chapter then had an individual quota to meet total. Again, no bed quota at Nebraska in a long time. They just stopped using their modified RFM a few years ago.

My mistake. I should have stated that they started using fully used RFM in 2010. Well according to the RFM report I have on hand. Yes, before that they were still hand matching or the modified RFM. I thought they were still using the bed quota when they were hand matching.

My heart goes out to her and to you. Are you close enough that you can drive down and take her to a movie or dinner and get her off campus? If you are, consider it.

AZTheta 01-21-2014 04:14 PM

I'm so sorry, hopeful mom. Thinking of you, and your daughter, and the hundreds of others who are also going to be going without a bid today.

hopeful mom 01-21-2014 04:17 PM

She is in class, so I cant talk with her, I offered to drive down but she said she is ok? I will talk to her when she gets out of class. I guess if your daughter has not gotten a text telling her no bid yet she may have one coming! thanks for all your kind words.

I'm so sorry.

This is the part of sorority life I really dislike. :(

Hopeful mom I am so sorry. I was hoping she(whoever she is) would have gotten a Theta Phi Alpha bid. Has she considered Delta Phi Epsilon? They are colonizing this semester and being part of a group of founding sisters is an amazing opportunity.

I am so sorry for your daughter. I am in my mid-20s now, but I went through IU formal recruitment TWICE before eventually transferring and joining Pi Phi at an SEC school (that's how hard IU is, think about that).

I think the daughter of hopeful_mom is a prime example of girls at IU maximizing all of their options and still ending up bid-less. Too often people on here lament that PNMs aren't being open-minded or are being elitist. There is a PROBLEM where a PNM goes to three pref rounds and still ends up bid-less. That just did not happen at my alma mater.

I remember that and I vaguely recall that the sorority members complained, honestly. Then there was a vote to change it just for that one recruitment to see how it went. It went well, so they switched permanently. The OSU culture relating to that was rather different than IU is, though. IU is a totally different animal.

Aw hopeful mom, I'm so sorry to hear that!

Is it possible that each rho gamma handles things differently? My daughter's rho gamma said she would visit each girl privately in her room. A text message is so impersonal.

Each rho gamma definitely handles it differently--if the girls live off campus and she can't get to them, or she is stuck in class, etc. etc. texts may have to happen.
