Syracuse recruitment was huge this semester. Total on campus is 90. This year's quota was 48 with 750+ pnm's going through the first round. Phi Sigma Sigma achieved quota.

Per our recruitment thread, DG pledged 48. Are the numbers substantially larger than last year? (I believe quota last year was 45, was it not?) It does seem odd to have total of 90 with such large quotas...

Syracuse Recruitment is very interesting number wise. In 2006 Total was changed from 70 to 90 and during the fall semester this year chapters ranged in size from 50-120. One of my chapter sisters currently at SU told me that they might/or had changed it to 100 for this year.

Quota has been 2005-40 2006-42 2007-45 2008-48. PNM's going through recruitment has increased from 535 in 2005 to 781 in 2008, however, it is not unusual to see 150+ pnms not finish the process because they either dropped or were released by all of the houses.

Syracuse has spring recruitment, and by the time it starts many women know which house they want to be a sister in. They have either met sisters in chapters or have been exposed to the rumor mill.

It is not unusual to have a full class but lose 10 or more new members during the nm process. Many, if not all, of the houses don't initiate the number of women they started out with, leading to smaller chapter sizes.

Any type of COB is also considered to be taboo and many houses would rather initiate a smaller class and be smaller than have everyone know they have participated in COBing.

Hope that answers your question.

Johns Hopkins (MD)

The February 21, 2008 online edition of the paper at The Johns Hopkins University reports on NPC and IFC recruitment results:

http://media.www.jhunewsletter.com/m...-3227074.shtml

Excerpts from the much longer article:

. . . Panhellenic Council establishes a quota for each of its four sororities. This year, all sororities except for Kappa Kappa Gamma exceeded the quota.

. . . This year, the quota was 39, while last year it was 32. . . .

Last year, the Panhellenic Council had 115 pledges. This year it has 149. . . .

They don't allow athletes to pledge fraternities? Are athletics THAT big at JH?

Benzgirl, I dunno if they're "THAT" big. Frankly, I've never thought of Johns Hopkins as being a rah-rah pro-sports-in-all-but-name type of school, but that could just be me. The impression I got from the article was that fraternities at Johns Hopkins that had traditionally (or recently) recruited heavily from one or two teams were running into problems. They may have to adjust to seeking new members elsewhere, and I can see how it could be hard to make that adjustment. If lots of members are into one or two particular sports, especially school teams, getting out of that comfort zone may be tough.

Did that look funny to anyone other than me? At first I thought Junior University? huh? but maybe it's just because I went to Leland Stanford Junior High.

So glad to see the numbers from Cal State San Marcos AZ-Alpha Xi.
I really hope that the chapters there keep growing!!

Bejazd,
This is a bit of trivia, but the official name of Stanford University is Leland Stanford Jr. University. Governor Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane, named the new university in memory of their only son, Leland Stanford, Jr. Young Leland died of typhoid as a teenager. It is nicknamed "The Farm" as part of the campus was the site of Governor Stanford's horse farm.

bejazd 03-13-2008 11:33 AM

We don't hear it called by the full name much, do we Fan?! I sort of remembered that Gov Stanford was either the Sr or the Jr but it's been awhile since I studied Calif history! Stanford, Crocker, Huntington, Doheny...they were quite a bunch of wild west characters!

so much for the history review. Carry on!

yeah that is good!!, both sororities are over total by a bit (10 or 15 members I think ) ... my next question is will CS-SM open for expansion or raise total ??

I haven't heard anything official, but I've heard rumors of the former in the (not so distant) past. We shall wait and see - I'd love to see additional Greek chapters at CSUSM :)

**Disclaimer - I'm not any type of official - one of my fellow alumna sisters was talking with another alumna at a recent event and discussing that possibility. Take it for what it is - speculation :)
