Just to clarify, we extended 96 bids and 87 chose to attend Bid Day! If all stick it through to initiation, that will bring our chapter from just above 40 when I joined to 176!

That is incredible. Congratulations to all the ladies of Indiana University's Alpha Delta Pi for all their hard work.

Congrats to you and to Delta Gamma! Maybe you'll finish your story? Maybe not? Either way, it's okay but I was enjoying reading it (took my mind off things).

Ok...strange question:

How many women can the Alpha Delta Pi chapter house hold?

I know it looks huge but I was under the impression that it holds 100 girls top (definitely not 150+ girls!).

Some of my friends in the chapter told me that they originally wanted to build an even bigger chapter house, but that (just like AOII later would) they had to make cut backs so it ended up a little smaller. Either way its still a beautiful house with plenty of room...but how much room lol :D

xp2k, I think this again goes back to bed quota isn't exactly the best phrase to use. It sounds like many of the chapters have seniors living out.

I just read that Alpha Xi Delta took 65 new members. The chapter house, if I recall correctly, sleeps about 100. So maybe 2 pledge classes worth can live in, or the sophomores and juniors, which sounds like what some of the IU gals have been saying.

Congratulations to all the chapters for a successful recruitment.

The amount of live-in members that the chapter house has room for is 96. The original plans for the house that you speak of included finishing the attic space so that it could be used as the chapter room. They were able to take a large number to account for seniors graduating, next year's live outs, and the possibility that a few may drop.

As for those discussing informal recruitment, it's no surprise to me that the chapter is not participating. For many years, recruitment was shoved down our throats by nationals and it really took away from the sisterhood (although we were all able to maintain an amazing sisterhood during my years there.). There is no need for informal. If it was anything like it was when I was at IU, there will be a few chapters who will have people drop and spots open up, but I believe that it will be under the table and the informal process will be invite only.

And to those speaking of adding an addition chapter to IU -- I am sure that it will not happen until all chapters have had a few years of full pledge classes under their belts. Yes, it may seem unfair that women who want to join do not get matched with a house, but many "suicide" homes or drop after not getting certain houses on their list. Also, it's a "mutual selection process." Just because one may want to be in a chapter does not mean that they are a good fit for any chapter. Unless you're a sophomore, I'd say try again, or look into the various non-Panhellenic sororities that IU offers.

I have been thinking through the math on this, and it seems that, to maximize placements, they should use the same calculations as in RFM, but substitute in each chapter's bed quota for the "calculate quota" step used on other campuses. However, I have a feeling that's not what is happening here. Does anyone know how the number of invites are decided?

(For example, if your bed quota is 25, and you have historically had a 50% return rate, you should be allowed to invite 25*3/.5 = 150 women to pref.

Let's go through a full example. Say there are three chapters: chapter A has a bq of 25, B has a bq of 25, C has a bq of 50, and C has a bq of 50. Their return rates for pref have historically been 50%, 50%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. After prefs, PNM's choose a chapter at random (i.e. there is an equal chance of all possible ranking orders on their bid card).

So, we have room for 150 women in the three chapters. We'd expect that all four chapters can invite 150 women, and each PNM will go to C, D, and their choice of A or B. Three rounds of parties, each PNM has a full schedule, and each PNM ends up with a bid.

Now, let's say that C instead invites 200 women to their prefs. There are now 200 women attending prefs, but only 150 bids available. 50 women will go bidless, because group C has 200 women at their parties, but only 50 bids to give out, and the other 150 women can not be absorbed by the other three chapters.

I chose neat numbers to make the math easy, but I am fairly convinced that the RFM logic still works with a bed quota system, and I am unclear on whether it is used at IU.)

It is my understanding that IU does not use RFM.

33girl 01-12-2011 03:16 PM

Could it be that IU as a whole doesn't use it but individual chapters do? (I hope that makes sense.)

IU does use RFM. The NPC RFM specialist assigned to that campus has a specific formula that helps with the special quota issue.
