This is absolutely incorrect.

If I recall, the student body president is black...and a Phi Mu at Ole Miss. But if I recall from the photos, yes there are black women in quite a few of the NPC sororities on campus...
Correct me if I am wrong :)

Mea culpa.

No, that's at Bama. In a thread where she was mentioned, I was corrected for thinking that they were interchangeable :-)

She's a Phi Mu

Kappa Alpha Theta and Phi Mu both currently have AA members at Ole Miss. Possibly other chapters, too. In the 70's, I clearly remember NPC chapters at Ole Miss that had members of Chinese, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern parentage.

Mississippi has an interesting ethnic mix -- not all blonde, blue eyed WASPs! There are many Chinese and Lebanese residents, especially in "The Delta" area. Not huge numbers, but the population of Mississippi is just shy of 3 million, so everyone stands out.

True! There were several Chinese girls who were Greek at Mississippi State in the seventies--I particularly remember 2 sweet Zeta sisters, one of whom also cheered.

Congrats to ADPi's.

Question to those who have hands-on experience with colonizing chapters at Ole Miss. Always seemed very difficult for new sororities to become established at OM. The ones that succeeded seemed to be groups which had strong chapters in places which attracted increasing numbers of OOS students. For example, as more kids came to Ole Miss from Texas, sororities which had strong local roots (like Theta) had a natural draw.

As many others have commented in other threads, Ole Miss is a difficult colonization challenge. Not just the "top tiering" status stuff. What is different this time around for ADPi -- or any other chapter for that matter. Is there sufficient "sustainibility" built into the colonization model?

Thanks.

How exciting for Alpha Phi and ADPi!

Firm plans for a fabulous house, the physical house itself, are critical -- and not located off away from the other two house clusters. Any word on where the houses will be located?

Across the street from Theta is first house and across the street from Pi Phi is seconda and if a third group ever comes across from Chi Omega. (So on Rebel Drive)

Ole Miss NPC groups have been "diverse" since I was in school (96-00)...and that's diverse with African American women and even Int'l Students. The Ole Miss of today is not the one we all seem remember from decades ago. Our Student Body is very diverse which I think makes all women interested in our NPC groups on campus.

How RFM Works - A critical point of understanding for a PNM:

The way recruitment is done from an invitation standpoint has changed greatly since the 70's when you went thru. For schools where you absolutely have to have a rec (see sticky on this topic for a good list of them) even that may not get you invited back as the chapters are limited by RFM (Release Figures Methodology which NPC regulates). Based on an average of recent prior year returns, chapters are told how many they can invite back for each round. So it chapter A has recs for 1000 women but can only invited 800, then at least 200 of those will be released by that chapter. The number of invites given will vary by chapter based on their prior performance (how many invites they issued and how many attendees from those invites). So chapter B may get to invited 900 and chapter C 700 and so on.

Your daughter will be ranking the groups at the end of each day. So the computer will match her top ranked chapters with her invitations. So say she goes to all 18 the first day. She'll rank them all. So say she can attend 12 parites the next day and gets 13 invites. The computer will drop her lowest ranked chapter and she will get a list of jsut the 12. And so on the next day, etc. So in essense, where you picked the invitations you accepted, the computer does it for her based on the invites against her rankings. She won't see all the invites, just the ones the computer assigns her to.

The basis for this is to level the playing field for all groups so that no groups invite back tons of people only to drop them at pref. And it makes every chapter be more targeted in their efforts. So, your daughter will be required to attend all the parties slated for her - called maximizing her options. If she doesn't attend them all (even if she is slotted to go to her bottom ranked group) she could be dropped from recruitment or not get a bid at the end.

Hope this helps.

Congrats to both ADPi and Alpha Phi. It will be very interesting for ADPi. They are colonizing at Mississippi State this spring (2013) and then Ole Miss in the fall 2013? I believe both universities have a house requirement. Should be an exciting time for them.
