a.) Xi Alpha, Univ. of Utah, 1914
b.) Mu Beta, Univ. of Georgia, 1922
c.) Psi Gamma, Mercer Univ., 1943
d.) Lambda Delta, Kent State Univ., 1947

We expanded quickly, but not fast enough to have chapter #100 be Univ. of Utah in 1914. Xi Alpha was; however, the first NPC group on their campus.

I believe it was D, Harper Lee

NutBrnHair 03-03-2008 02:34 PM

You are correct, Otter!

I didn't think anyone would believe George W. Bush would recognize Pat Schroeder for anything!

Cardinal026 03-05-2008 12:18 PM

I have to admit, I'd never heard of A, B or C so just spent some time googling them - VERY interesting backgrounds, especially Louise Bryant.

NutBrnHair - I'm always amazed at how you can always come up with questions! HQ should hire you to work in some sort of historian department, you really retain everything!! :)

100 years of...

2008 marks the 100th anniversary of what Chi Omega National Convention tradition?

a.) Baked Alaska for dessert at the President's banquet
b.) Women of Achievement Award
c.) The performance of the "Earth Mother" play
d.) Revelry

ChiONic 03-12-2008 04:43 PM

I can tell you it's not A) b/c this tradition of baked Alaska began around 1924 (or thereafter) when the conventions began being held at the Greenbrier Hotel

I can tell you it's not B) b/c this was not set in place until 1930

I can tell you it's not C) b/c this became tradition in 1912 and has been performed every year since then

I believe it is D). This is also known is "vaudeville" (derived from French theatre). The actors/players of this variety type performance were called revelors/revelers. Chi Omega adopted this tradition in 1908 when the hostess chapters entertained the guests following dinner. They also sang our Chi Omega songs during this time. So if the math is right, it is a 100 yr tradition this year???

NutBrnHair 03-12-2008 05:22 PM

Yes!!!

We have a playa!!! You are correct, ChiONic. Good work.

Wanna ask the next question?

Oooo, oooo, oooo pick me! I've been to that lodge and can confidently answer: C) Upsilon Chapter!

I'm thinking the aerodynamic architechture might have played a role in saving the structure during the recent tornado?

ChiONic 03-13-2008 10:38 AM

Yes you are correct! Our lodge has been lovingly nicknamed "pizza hut" because of the right side of the house is shaped like the roof of the pizza hut restaurants and has a covered "drive thru". Of course, since renovation was done in 2002, the back of the house is now the front and the side entrance is considered the back door. Ah....the memories!

ChiONic 03-13-2008 10:42 AM

Ok, next one...

1) What chapter is known for having a friendly Chi O ghost living in it? The legend states she came via a couch from the old Chi O house she was haunting and has been living in the new house ever since. This dates all the way back to the 1920's.
2) And what is her name?

To this day, Chi O members of this chapter claim when doors/windows shut on their own, they say "insert name here" did it.

(oh, no multi choice on this one!) I found it fun to dig for it, so should the lucky winner!

NutBrnHair 03-13-2008 10:48 AM

Kappa Delta Chapter...Amanda?

ChiONic 03-13-2008 12:15 PM

Good guess, but no.

Kappa Chapter at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Her name is Charlotte.

Here is the story:
Some people look back on college as the time of their lives and long to return to campus and those good times.

One member of Chi Omega Sorority supposedly never left the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The spirit of a sorority sister named Charlotte lingers to this day.

Link: http://media.www.dailynebraskan.com/...-3067666.shtml

"Everyone knows Charlotte," said Chi Omega member Emily Potter, a senior communications studies and English major.

Legend has it that Charlotte committed suicide long ago in the former Chi Omega house, members said.

"I know it was probably in the teens," said Shaun Vanneman, an adviser for Chi Omega who lived at the house in the late 1980s.

The women moved to the new house on 16th Street in the 1920s, Vanneman said, and Charlotte's ghost tagged along.

"She was in the old Chi Omega house and she came over in a couch," Potter said.

Once in her new home, Charlotte settled in upstairs.

"She lurks in what we called heaven," said Janet Ehlers, who joined UNL's chapter of Chi Omega in the 1960s. "It used to be an unfinished attic."

Bedrooms now occupy that area of the house, and Charlotte remains.

Potter said the ghost inhabits a specific room on the second floor, near the sun deck.

However, she's not a bother to residents.

"Nothing's happened in a while," Potter said. "It's become more of a joke."

When windows and doors mysteriously open or close, the members blame Charlotte, Potter said.

Potter also said Charlotte appeared on a Chi Omega Facebook group, adding current members as friends, but she thinks it was an older member playing around.

"She seems to be a prankster," Vanneman said, adding that when she was in school, "Charlotte was running rampant. My friend Jane was pushed out of bed!"

Ehlers said no one has ever seen Charlotte, but it has become tradition to pass the story on to new members.

"After all these years, it's sort of a comforting thing," Ehlers said. "She's watching over us."

ChiONic 03-13-2008 12:17 PM

I happened upon the friendly ghost story when searching for chapters that did not have pictures of their houses for my previous question.

hmmm....I know she married, so b is out. I'm going to guess A.

NutBrnHair 03-26-2008 02:46 PM

Nope, not A -- actually, she was scared to fly, so she often took the train.

Felicity is correct!

FYI: She was scared of airplanes (traveled by car or train); She was married to a Mr. H.M. Collins (not sure what happened to him); She had no children (She was survived by one nephew upon her death in 1972 at the age of 90.)
