Oh me too!

I had really weird experiences that I very hazily remember...

Junior Prom:

I remember wearing a maroon dress that showed a lot of cleavage. But, I was supposed to be going with an old friend of mine. The night of the dance, I was waiting for him to arrive and he never did. When I called his house, his parents were horrified because they looked on the calendar and realized that they had put down the wrong weekend! LOL! So, I never got to my junior prom.

However, to make up for it, a week later (the weekend that he THOUGHT was prom weekend), he took me out and spent upwards of $200 on me. And, this was just an old friend! I didn't even really talk to him after that because we went our separate ways.

D.O.M. (Debutantes of Monroe):

This was an invitation-only social event not associated with school. To be honest, I was SHOCKED that I got an invitation because it was one of those things that all the girls in the city would hope for, so people cried when they weren't invited each year. I wore this killer purple ballgown - again, made by my mom.

Senior Prom:

Did you go to your prom?

Yes

What did you wear? Colors?

Sparkly silver dress that my mom made

Were you prom king/queen?

No

Did you go with someone special or friend?

I feel like I had a date but I CAN'T REMEMBER! Oh my gracious! I get all the dances confused.

What was your prom theme?

I have no idea.

How much did your prom cost?

I believe we just had to be current with our senior dues and it was included. The dues covered a number of senior events but it was only like $50 each semester or something like that.

...and what high schooler has that kind of "ice," unless we talkin' C -Z

vanda 06-20-2005 03:10 PM

They should have spent less on ice and more on a bra with a lot more support because some of them youguns were sagging a bit much.

Are you sure that this is a prom? I thought these were from the 2005 Playas Ball. I could have sworn that I saw the Rev. Don "Magic" Juan in the background.

Did you go to your prom?
Yes I went to both of mine. We had a Junior and Senior Prom.

What did you wear?Colors?
My Junior prom I wore a black velvet strapless dress with a fuschia bottom that came just below my knees. My senior prom, I wore a black sequined fitted dress with white chiffon lace around the bottom.

Were you prom king/queen?
No.

Did you go with someone special or friend?

My Junior Prom I went with my husband, and my Senior prom I went stag. My husband dropped me off though. Well at that time he was my boyfriend.

What was your prom theme?

Junior-I believe it was where do we go from here. Senior--Unchained Melody.

How much did your prom cost? I think it was between $70-$80 bucks.

Some proms now have ish prices?

I just received some pics from my friend supposedly to be from a prom in Chicago. The style and dress was horrible, scary. I wish you all could see the pictures. What happened to going to the store and finding the perfect knockout dress. They were dressed in lime green, flourescent orange, lemon yellow, and they were so revealing, not the traditional evening wear gowns. Yuck.

Ditto. A girdle is a woman's best friend.

Too funny! One of my friends in Boston sent me these pics just recently. He wanted to know if these kids were representative of all Chicago folks or just some. Below are the responses that I sent back to him as well as some of my other friends.

Oh what what what is wrong w/the kids today?

#1 No one should ever have a dress made for the prom ever again. If you can not afford to spend a pretty penny for a dress made by a reputable seamstress in a fabric other than satin, then you can't have your dress made.

#2 Cutting holes randomly into a dress does not make it a cute/unique design. It just makes it a Hot Azz Mess.

#3 Lets speak on colors that flatter you. If you are one of my many ebony sisters of the world then bright orange or yellow or lime green are not the colors for you. Arguably neither is white, but that's just my opinion. Please make friends with the shades known as gold, crimson, chocolate, champagne, navy blue, and, black.

#4 Your nails should never be long enough to be used as tongs when cooking.

#5 Now I thought that the ridiculous hair went out w/the 80s even the 90s. In this day and age there is no reason for you to be out of the house w/a combination finger wave, pin curl, french roll w/waterfall of weave coming out the top and crimps for the bangs. Why sistas? Why?

The future is looking so bleak.

Too funny and too true! Did their parents see them leave the house in this HAM or did they help them pick out the outfit? I shudder to think what things will be like when my kids are that age. Will the girls be down to two band-aids and an eye patch? The words "sit yo' $5 azz down before I make change" come to mind.

I kinda wish that there were individual pictures of each woman, front and back. It's like a moth to a flame. I just want to see more.

HOW do people let their kids leave home like this? How do they authorize the making of such dresses?

Did you go to your prom?
Yes I went to both of mine. We had a Junior and Senior Prom.

What did you wear?Colors?
Junior prom, I wore a beautiful gown, I can't even describe it. It was 2-tone, cream and another color that was sort of a mixture of gold and silver. It was like 2 layers brought together with rhinestone buttons. I can't describe it, any better, just trust me on this, I looked the bomb. Senior Prom, I wore a strapless satin red ball gown that flared a bit at my hips. I looked like a princess, complete with tiara!

Were you prom king/queen?
No, but in that tiara I looked like one, just call me a prom perp.

Did you go with someone special or friend?

Junior prom, I went with a no-good skunk who abandoned me b/c I wouldn't dance up under him like a BET video. I spent the rest of the night up in the balcony with my teachers. Senior prom, I went with a very good friend, it was one of the best nights ever. We almost kissed on the front step when he took me home, but my daddy opened the door and put a stop to that one.

What was your prom theme?

Junior was Sea of Dreams (the gym was decorated like a cruise boat) and Senior, I don't remember.

How much did your prom cost?

I think $60 per couple (no singles or same-sex couples allowed).

vanda 06-21-2005 09:53 AM

I did not know those pics were from a Chicago prom. I wonder what school.
