UofM-TKE- I go to Miami too and I'm so glad you are scanning all of these old pictures, its so great to see how the school has changed in all these years

AGDee 05-24-2009 08:59 PM

UofM-TKE, those are great pictures. I need to get my hands on some of my dad's pictures. He pledged TKE at Wayne State University in Detroit in 1954 or 55.

SWTX: My Initiation dress was a white Gunne Sax. I have searched and searched for my pictures from my initiation and haven't found them yet. Someday they will show up. I was initiated in 1984 :)

University of Miami - 1955

Tropical_Dancer,

One of my best friends at Miami was an АΔΠ. I'll post some 1970's pics later with her in them. We used to hang out at the main Greek spot called the Varsity Inn, which was at Lejuene and Dixie. We all had beautiful paddles on the wall. By the time that I left Miami, the VI was a Pizza Hut.

FSUZeta,

By the time that I got to Miami, the white dinner jackets were long gone. The hippies wore bell bottoms, we wore jeans or gym shorts and when we were feeling hippie, we wore striped bells. The Phi Delts who ran the VI, set the style. We looked good.

AGDee,

I found these pictures on the Internet. Pics from that era are hit and miss. Hope your dad has his. Getting old pics from my brothers and Little Sisters is literally like pulling teeth. They all want to look, but no one wants to scan.

University of Miami, Florida - 1960 Derby Day

The 1960 yearbook has lots of good pictures. Most of the sororities had a Derby Day picture on their page, so here they are.

University of Miami, Florida - 1960 Sorority Pledges on Parade

These are more pictures from the 1960 yearbook. I think that they are interesting because these were the last few years of an era. In 1963 we had the Berkley Free Speech Movement. In the mid 1960's we had the height of the Civil Rights Movement. And in the late 1960's we had the Viet Nam protests. During this same period, we also had the introduction of The Pill and the end of "In loco Parentis". The world of 1970 was not the world of 1960, the world into which these pictures give us a peek.

Rush in the Panhellenic Building.

Aw! This picture is so sweet. I adore the dress, too. But I especially love how they are looking at each other.

Back on topic, I really enjoy looking at these retro pictures. Maybe it's the sentimental mood I'm in, but I get a strong sense of history and years tradition and sisterhood. I think it's really sweet seeing pictures of founders, and pictures of sorority women in front of their house that is over 100 years old. I think it would be amazing to be a part of something so steeped in tradition with thousands of sisters of sisters everywhere.

(back to my nosing around old threads....)

UofM-TKE, thanks so much for sharing these pictures! I love seeing stuff from back in the day.

Tropical_Dancer 07-23-2009 02:16 AM

UofM-TKE- I love all the Miami pictures you found, especially of the panhellenic building, and all the goregous ADPi pledges :)

The lovely founding members of Theta Phi Alpha... Only 2 of them were actually collegians!

pshsx1 07-23-2009 03:35 AM

This thread is absolutely amazing.

I was on a committee last year to document Greek Life activities since our school was founded but I only took one picture. I'll have to go back through the yearbooks (when my school used to do them) and find some more!

But here's my chapter when my school was still Lawrence Institute of Technology in 1972 (or '73) a few months after affiliating (10/23/71)! (formerly Kappa Phi Sigma):
