During the official dedication of the Chi Omega Executive Headquarters in Memphis, held June 1995, a skydiver (dressed in an owl costume) jumped out of a plane, landed in the parking lot, came to the podium and announced what?

a.) greetings from our neighbors Kappa Delta and Pi Kappa Alpha
b.) the anonymous gift of a fifty piece place setting of hand-painted china
c.) a proclamation by the Governor of Tennessee that it was "Chi Omega Day"
d.) an owl at the Memphis Zoo was named Persephone in honor of the occasion

Correct CutieHootie -- you have a question for the group?

Cutie_Hootie 10-09-2007 08:46 PM

Which sister's badge was recently donated to the Executive Headquarters?

a. Harper Lee
b. Mary Love Collins
c. Ethel Switzer Howard
d. Roselyn Dabbs
e. Elizabeth Orman

ps--Bonus points if you can explain who donated it and why. :)

Jobellesis 10-12-2007 10:48 AM

I think I read that it belonged to (c.) Ethel, who wrote Chi Omega Symphony. Didn't Ethel's grandson give it to a Chi O friend who donated it? (I'm too lazy to get out my Eluesis. If I'm wrong, I want to delete my answer, so please don't quote me! Ha Ha!)

Cutie_Hootie 10-14-2007 08:42 PM

You are correct! Ethel Switzer Howard's badge was recently donated to the Executive Headquarters! Do you have a question, Jobellesis? :)

Jobellesis 10-16-2007 08:09 PM

Is is the first chapter in Chi Omega - Psi?

Jobellesis 10-19-2007 06:11 PM

Psi is correct. I think that this was one of the first issues of Life after they began publishing it again. It came out just as I was finishing my senior year in college. I graduated a few weeks later. One of my sisters told me about the issue, and I bought one for myself. I've kept it all these years.

I guess it's your turn to ask a question.

BellaBerlee 10-20-2007 12:46 AM

Well if I shall :) Being a teacher and all...

What sister was named the oustanding kindergarten teacher by the National Boards of Teachers? *Hint, she is from Chi Beta*

A) Marcia James Carthaus
B) Elanor Robbins Jonah
C) Ann James Millerborg
D) Dr. Mary Ann Carroll

I'll guess B.

BellaBerlee 10-25-2007 06:10 PM

Great job :)

You got it absolutely correct! <3

NutBrnHair 10-25-2007 07:03 PM

b.) 2.95
c.) 3.002
d.) 3.2

D!

NutBrnHair 10-25-2007 07:27 PM

Yes! Otter is correct.

Wanna ask the next one?

NutBrnHair 10-30-2007 12:10 PM

Here's another...

Which of the following has not been the editor of The Eleusis?

a.) Ida Pace Purdue
b.) Mattie Craighill Nicholas
c.) Christelle Ferguson
d.) Frances Mayes
e.) Christine Barnicki

OtterXO 10-30-2007 12:17 PM

Arg, I just saw that I was supposed to ask the next one! I'll do the one after this.

NutBrnHair 10-30-2007 12:27 PM

Hey Otter! Go ahead and guess!!!

D!!!

NutBrnHair 10-30-2007 12:43 PM

Correct -- Frances Mayes is a well-known author (Under the Tuscan Sun) and she's a Chi Omega, but she's never edited The Eleusis.

NutBrnHair 11-26-2007 12:51 PM

Here's a good one!

Which role played by actress Diane Keaton was based on the life of a woman who was a charter member of Chi Omega's Psi Alpha Chapter at the University of Oregon?

a.) Kay Adams in "The Godfather"
b.) Annie Hall in "Annie Hall"
c.) Louise Bryant in "Reds"
d.) Theresa Jones in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar"

xowest 11-27-2007 02:38 PM

I believe the answer is "C"- Louise Bryant in "Reds".

I am embarrassed to admit that I am a Psi Alpha alum and had to do some internet research to figure this one out. For anyone who knows anything about the home of the U of O, Eugene, OR, this trivia answer is too perfect for words.

Hi xowest!
Don't know a lot about Eugene, although have lots of family there - curious why its too perfect for words? Do tell!

Right answer, xowest!

As a former European/World History teacher (and a big fan of the movie, "Reds") I learned a good deal about Louise Bryant & John Reed and their lives during the Russian Revolution. I was shocked, but very pleased, to discover she was a charter member of Chi Omega's Psi Alpha Chapter. Ms. Bryant was a journalist, a feminist and quite the Bohemian! (Not your "typical sorority girl!")

Since I haven't answered one of these in a while, thought I would go ahead and try. :) My answer is d.) Dallas, TX

NutBrnHair 12-04-2007 02:39 PM

Perfect answer, Cutie Hootie!

I've never gotten to go to the Dallas Chi Omega Christmas Market, but it sounds most impressive!

Next question?

Cutie_Hootie 12-04-2007 09:11 PM

Not the happiest topic, but...

Out of the 23 single-letter chapters (Psi through Alpha), how many are currently inactive?
A. 7
B. 11
C. 9
D. 3

Bonus points if you can name the first chapter to become inactive, and the year.

lillady85 12-05-2007 12:15 AM

I give credit to this wonderful website I found:

1895 Arkansas - Psi
1898 Jessamine Female Institute - Chi (Old) (inactive since 1901)
1899 Hellmutk Woman's College - Phi (Old) (inactive since 1900)
1899 Tulane - Rho
1899 Randolph - Macon Woman's - Sigma (inactive since 1960)
1899 Mississippi - Tau
1899 Transylvania- Chi
1899 Ward-Belmont - Upsilon (Old) (inactive since 1900)
1900 Illinois - Omicron
1900 Tennessee - Pi
1902 Cal - Berkeley - Mu
1902 Wisconsin - Madison - Nu
1902 U of Kansas- Lambda
1903 Nebraska - Kappa
1903 George Washington - Phi Alpha (inactive since 1968)
1901-Northwestern- Xi
1904 Texas - Iota
1905 Michigan - Eta
1905 West Virginia - Theta
1906 Colby - Beta (inactive since 1984)
1906 Colorado - Zeta
1907 Dickinson - Delta (inactive since 1971)
1907 Barnard - Epsilon (Old) (inactive since 1913)
1908 Florida State - Gamma
1909 Washington (WA) - Alpha

I think this is right!

lillady85 12-05-2007 12:16 AM

Oh oops. I was supposed to pick an answer. :-P

I say, A. 7 Chapters.

the first to go would have been the old Chi chapter.

Cutie_Hootie 12-05-2007 09:12 PM

This was a very tricky question, because it depends on interpretation!

These are the single-letter chapters I have as inactive:
Beta--Colby College
Chi (Old)--Jessamine Institute
Delta--Dickinson College
Epsilon (#1)--Barnard
Epsilon (#2)--SUNY-Buffalo
Phi (#1)--Hellmuth Woman's College
Phi (#2)--USC
Sigma--Randolph-Macon
Tau (Old)--Ole Miss (Oxford)
Upsilon (#1)--Belmont College
Upsilon (#2)--Southwestern Baptist/Union

According to that list, 11 chapters have closed. But if you count each letter once, only 8 chapters have closed (did I even list that as a choice?!) Plus I don't really understand why Ole Miss has two different listings as Tau...unless it was a community chapter versus a collegiate chapter? Nutbrnhair, you are our resident expert, any clarification?

PS--According to the 1920 edition of Baird's, Phi Chapter was the first to close, in 1899. This contradicts the other information we were given, so now I have no clue!!

It is a tricky question!!!

A couple of points...I would not count Upsilon (#2) as ever being closed -- Southwestern Baptist became Union Univ.

Tecnically, yes, Tau was closed for several years because the state legislature forbade Greek Letter societies (for that matter, the same thing happened in the state of Arkansas from 1902-1904)

I would say that Old Chi was the first to close in 1898, due to the fact the curriculum at the school did not meet collegiate standards. I'm guessing Baird's counted Phi chapter as the first closed, since the chapter name "Chi" had been taken by the Transylvania chapter in 1903.

Cutie_Hootie 12-06-2007 10:31 PM

Wow! Even more complex than I thought!

Thank you, Nutbrnhair, for helping us.

Now on to the next question...are you ready, lillady? :)

NutBrnHair 01-08-2008 01:37 PM

A month without a new trivia question?

Which of Chi Omega's founders was one of eleven children?

NutBrnHair 01-15-2008 01:03 PM

Let's Narrow it down...

It was Sis Doc. Dr. Richardson was born in Rich Valley, VA; one of eleven children.

lillady, you jump in and ask a question anytime you're ready!

lillady85 01-15-2008 02:44 PM

Ah! I don't know any good ones. I need to read more ChiO history before I do and maybe go to the SAE Lavere Chapel (Sp?) in Evanston. You ask one NutBrn. :-)

NutBrnHair 01-15-2008 06:21 PM

Kinda a tough one...

Which Chi Omega active chapter can claim that they were Chi Omega's one-hundredth chapter as well as the first national represented at their university?

a.) Xi Alpha, Univ. of Utah, 1914
b.) Mu Beta, Univ. of Georgia, 1922
c.) Psi Gamma, Mercer Univ., 1943
d.) Lambda Delta, Kent State Univ., 1947

lillady85 01-22-2008 01:38 PM

I'm going to go with Xi Alpha, University of Utah.
