World-recognized Skyline Chili, out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Whether you have it 2-way, or 3-way, you haven't had chili until you've had Skyline.
The rest of the world just don't know...well, I guess now you do. ...as far as regional foods, however, does anyone (outside of Ohio) have White Castle's --or some places they're called Krystals??? There is no middle ground on White Castle's, you either love em or hate em. and whatever you do, don't be down wind from someone whose had them about 45 minutes later. |
If it HAS to be KK vs. DD then KK wins EVERY TIME (although DD donut holes are good)!
But I like fresh homemade donuts. The BEST ones I have had recently were at an apple-picking farm that did their own apple cider donuts. THose were AMAZING. And please don't talk about Chicago pizza in the same breath as NYC pizza. Just insulting, lol. There is NOTHING like a fresh pie from one of the classic hole-in-the-wall spots in Brooklyn or the Bronx. The type where they don't use shredded mozzerella, they use the fresh, sweet slices of mozzerella cheese instead. Mmmmm..... As for the rest of the food listed on this thread, my family is West Indian and I don't eat the vast majority of it, lol. Someone talked about West Indian food and that is what I LOVE- roti, curry, oxtails (mmmmm), rice and peas, yam, non-frozen patties (and NO it is not a HAMBURGER PATTY) with coco bread...mmm...I am stopping by the patty store tomorrow..... |

Gosh, I love neckbones (with hot sauce) and brown beans with cornbread! YUM!! Back to topic: Let me end the donut debate. If have not had a SHIPLEY'S donut, you just don't know what you're missing. Regarding fast food, I love Spangles! They have everything from ridiculous fatty to healthy (chicken gyros, etc.) and the BEST fries! Oh yeah, I hated Skyline, but then again, spaghetti noodles in my chili ain't chilie to me. |
Just has to chime in on KK vs DD.
One of my friends says DD is the neglected, stepchild of KK. There is no comparison - KK is the best!!! Although the sugar is like instant-diabetes w/flour but it sure does taste good.:D Ideal08, I eat fried chicked gizzards, I really didn't think anyone else did that except back in Nigeria. My friends thought I was crazy when I made some. I also LOVE fried plantains, Carribean and Nigerian patties (they're almost the same). My auntie in ATL used to make da bomb collard greens. I need to go over there for dinner again:) Has anyone tried Indian Food? I tried some stuff and it was really good but I can't remember what it was called. |

tandoori samosas (the potato samosas are AMAZING!) curry nann chicken masala and these potato based appetizers that are SO GOOD, whose name I don't remember, lol. Does anyone like Thai food? NYC has some good places, but New Haven had the BEST Thai places...mm...basil chicken and spring rolls... |
Indian (Native American) candy - it's maple cured smoked salmon that's been dried - think sweet salmon jerky.
I've never had it, but it sells like crazy up here. And Indian (South Asian) food here is FANTASTIC - especially if you go to some fusion Indian restaurants. The traditional stuff is good too. :) |

That's one thing I could never get used to out there. The first time, I ordered it, I though the lady brought me spaghetti. *lol* I like Mr. Bojangles though. :D I love a good ol' Folgers can full of hot tamales!! For some reason, the ones made down South are THA BOMB!! I have never tasted any that compare (from a can, in a restaurant, etc.) anywhere, except in Miss, with some from Shreveport coming in a close second. I also like Saqatash (sp?). With corn bread, of course. |

I've been eating samosas forever - in high school back home, some lady used to make them. SO best believe that was lunch. They were so good. I've had curry, roti and some desserts - I can't remember the name of the dessert - I want to call it gulab jaman ?sp I'll find it ETA: It's called gulab jamoon |
Greek and Lebanese
Here in my neck of the woods and where I grew up there are an abundance of Greek and Lebanese foods and I love them!! :D
Let me give you the rundown... - grape leaves (veggie) - falafel - chicken schwarma - gyros (with extra cucumber sauce) - pita chips There's more, but that's all that's on my mind right now. Does any other area have a lot of these places? Also, growing up in Detroit, we had A LOT of 24 hour restaurants, called Coney Islands. If you look in the phone book, there were like 100 of them in the city! Now, the only places that are 24 hours are Walgreens, Waffle House and Big Boy... Can you grub all day and all night where ever you are? |

I miss my pecan waffle from The Wafflehouse |
Re: Greek and Lebanese
We have those places here, but they aren't Greek so much as Middle Eastern I thought. Thre is this one Israeli spot on 84th and Amsterdam that has the BEST FALAFEL EVER, AND their pistachio baklava is AWESOME.

KRISPY KREME ALL THE WAY! Now, I'm a Cali girl and it was all about Winchell's...until I had my first KK donut in '94. ALSO, I love Indian food. I have about 4 Indian cookbooks. Love samosas, good tandoori or curry, palak paneer, aloo mattar, and gobi mattar. OK, I think I might have Indian tonight. |

See...ya'll talking about food like that has made me hungry...and remembering da 4th. Lawd, Jesus, I feel like shoutin'; it was soooooo good...
Da menu consisted of half a hog (which had been roastin for about 12 hours), beef ribs, Boston butts (it was 6, I think), pork chops, leg quarters, chicken wings, all served with mild or hot azz h*ll BBQ sauce. Then we had candied yams (sweet potatoes), mac and cheese (wouldn't be a BBQ without it), collard greens, turnip greens, potato salad, fried corn, grilled corn, macaroni salad, potato salad, and fried squash For dessert we had punchbowl cake, homemade vanilla ice cream (da kind ya make in a churn), fried pies, banana puddin', German chocolate cake, and red velvet cake *thinking* lawd Jesus....let MuhDea (MotherDear aka Grandmother) call me so I can get into the kitchen and be her taste tester..... COME ON THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!! |
