Also some women came to open parties and did not pursue an interview, which I would expect (plus I honestly don't know how the team could have handled one more interview!!) I hope those women go on to pursue other groups which will be recruiting soon or perhaps DG when they colonize.

ahhh ok, I understand now. Well i'm glad that we had such an outstanding turnout!!

lawgal 09-04-2008 03:22 PM

While we are waiting for results, I was wondering how the colonists are structured. Are they considered as one pledge class? Do they have different year numbers based on year in school? Are they even considered a pledge class, or a charter class (or re-charter class)?

Most colonies are considered a charter or re-charter class. They are all one class, unless some of them can't initiate with the rest for some reason or other.

I assume you mean membership numbers, and I'm guessing how those are assigned is a secret part of ritual.

lawgal 09-04-2008 03:43 PM

I actually meant Pledge Class of 2012, 2011, 2009, etc. Or do they number the pledge classes that way?

NutBrnHair 09-04-2008 03:44 PM

What is panhellenic total/limitation at Alabama and what is average chapter size?

My prediction is they will take over total.

No, we don't do it that way. This colonization group would be considered "pledge class '08" regardless of class standing.

IrishPipes has total listed at 180 and I think it was mentioned in the big Alabama thread that most are around that size or over.

Yeah from my understanding total is 180, but i've read that many chapters have upwards of 250+ members.

NutBrnHair 09-04-2008 04:02 PM

OK, thanks KSUViolet...total is 180, we think.

I just looked back at that long Bama thread. I saw a quote from Aphigal that said:

Quote:

It's important on this campus to be ultra selective. So while we may have 300 or more interviews I would be highly surprised if we pledged to total this semester as some great women are either too shell shocked from formal recruitment to put themselved through another process.
What I'm saying is that I will be highly surprised if they pledge under total.

We'll see.

I wish Alpha Phi much good luck.

Exactly...your pledge class is the year (or semester & year) you pledged. Class standing in school has zero to do with it - colony or otherwise.

Bamamom13 09-04-2008 04:42 PM

My daughter said that bids will be given out tomorrow and girls from other houses will be there to give them as much of the 'Bid Day at Alabama' as they can. They can't imitate the Squeal Run but they can give them a very festive atmosphere. I think it is amazing how all of the sororities have welcomed Alpha Phi. I think it says alot about the girls at Alabama, but I would imagine it is like that at other universities. I have never seen a colonization. My school did not have one colonize while I was there so I have been fascinated by the process at Alabama.

BamaMama 09-04-2008 04:53 PM

Are there any details (such as time, etc.) about bid day?

bamadzmom 09-04-2008 06:47 PM

That is also what I was wondering---at what time willbids go out?

How great of the other sororities to welcome Alpha Phi pledges with a mock Bid Day! I'm so excited for this new pledge class and my sorority finally getting some presence in the SEC! I hope someone on GC will be able to post pics of the new pledge class.

Bamamom13 09-04-2008 07:01 PM

Alabama now has a greek newsletter that they send to both greek members at the school but also to their parents. Here is a link to it. www.greeklife.ua.edu/Scroll11.html
The newsletter says that Bid Day is at 5:00pm and that they are hoping to bid 200 girls. That is so exciting!!

AnchorAlumna 09-04-2008 07:50 PM

Generally speaking, at a colonization the idea is to take average campus size. So, say total is 180, but most groups run around 250 or even 265...then they'll shoot for around, say, 260.
There are bound to be some women who wind up turning down their bids...some who don't actually accept the bid immediately...some who accept the bid and drop after a couple of weeks...with that number, there are always some variations. I believe the women will probably be given a deadline by which to accept or decline a bid. They may even pick up a few more after Friday, to get to average chapter size.
That's just generally the case...YMMV.;)

I guess I think we can have both. Given the number of women Aphi interviews 400+, and saw at parties 400++ if we pledge close to total it still means we accepted aproximately 50% of the women who rushed Aphi. That is both quantity and quality.

I do not know how many bids will be extended...but I am excited to see pictures!!:D

Now onto bid day and the next question who will live in the house???

dgdramadawg 09-05-2008 12:59 AM

I just heard that one of my former students is now an Alpha Phi at Alabama! :) I'm sure that all of their new members are as wonderful as she is!!

Bamagirl08 09-05-2008 01:25 AM

YAY! Also, what a relief to the girls at Pref that they did not have to go home and wait to receive a bid or call. Very classy on Alpha Phi's part to handle it that way, in my opinion!

Bamagirl08 09-05-2008 02:53 AM

I agree. I was talking with the girls at my table and how we were going to be nervous all day waiting for bid day (which is at 5 ish). all the girls screamed/cried when they told us. it was a great moment :)

tangelo212 09-05-2008 05:33 AM

Congratulations Bamagirl!! I am SO incredibly excited for you as you start your journey as an Alpha Phi!!!

I can imagine it must have been an amazing chill bump moment when they announced that all the ladies at preference would be invited to join.

Congratulations again, and keep us posted on Bid Day/new member period/pledge class news!

ETA: ...and yayyyy for the Triad being at Bama now!!

Bamagirl08 09-05-2008 08:51 AM

Does this mean approximately 200 bids were given out?

Congratulations on becoming an Alpha Phi. Come on over to our forum and say hi!

Aphigal 09-05-2008 10:10 AM

YIPPPPEEEE!!

Yes bids were extended at both parties. Parents were contact yesterday and we expect about 1/3rd of the parents to attend bid day as well.

I can't wait to see pictures.

Bamagirl08 - welcome to Alpha Phi. I was a charter member, as you will be (slightly different I think you will get to sign the recolonization charter) it's a special club to be in...having your name on the charter that will hang in our Bama house.

Heartfelt welcome to our great sisterhood.

texas*princess 09-05-2008 10:10 AM
