Yes! We get the NEX and MCX weekly ads mailed here at home. Unfortunately, I can't remember if it was the NEX or MCX, but, about once a year, they hold a designer bag sale. (Either way, there's an MCX at Kaneohe Bay.) They'll send out a special flyer specifically for the handbag sale. If your sister is the one in the military family, ask her to keep an eye out for it and let you know when the sale comes.

I was just in wal-mart restocking our hurricane supplies-- and saw a "Goach." I thought about GC. *lol* :p

I've never been a Coach fan, but I'm a fanatic over Dooney. I want a new one sooo bad, but I'm saving every penny I can right now for a pool. I allow myself two purse splurges a year, and I've already spent one on a new Vera... :o

Those of you who say you don't carry your designer purses because there are so many fakes intrigue me. I don't get it. You don't want people to think your bag is fake? Who cares? I know I don't. I carry the purses because EYE like 'em so if someone thinks it's fake, I'll never know because I'll never care.

It's not that I think people will think they are fake - the real ones obviously aren't. It's that I don't want people think I am the type to buy a designer bag because they are the flavour of the month. So, I'll wait till the next trend comes, and then bring my bags out. Let's hear it for the classics!

People kill me with their fake Coach bags, but they kill me even more when they tell me how much they paid for it.

I once knew a girl who was really proud of the fact that she bought a fake Coach for "just $200!"

I think I burst her bubble when I told her that for that price she could've gotten a real one from the Factory store.

It kills me even more when people try to pass their fakes off as real bags. Honey, Coach doesn't make bags with peeling plastic handles.

Seriously...Coach is on sale all the time. Not to mention that you can find it at TJMaxx/Marshalls and the outlets. There really is no excuse for carrying a fake Coach. Really a fake anything, but Coach especially.

If people want to carry a fake, that's their business (and a sad business at that) but it won't stop me from carrying the real thing. I paid too much money for my bags to let a fake bag from the local hair shop stop me. :)

nittanyalum 08-25-2008 10:00 AM

Or instead of buying/carrying a fake, ease into carrying the real thing by buying a good used bag. This ebay seller looks like she specializes in selling "gently used" name bags and they're good entry-level prices. http://stores.ebay.com/Judith-Adler-Vintage-Design Then, once you've carried the real thing, you too will be addicted (and let me apologize in advance to your bank account ;)).

I'm not a big bag fanatic at all, because I like shoulder bags and they seem to be getting fewer and farther between.

LOL @ the Cheetos and Slim Jim. And I'm not a big bag fan either, I only have a few shoulder bags and a wristlet, and I refuse to carry anything that has a logo pattern on it of any kind.

amanda6035 08-25-2008 01:40 PM

um...the most expensive purse I own is my $68 Vera Bradley Villager....and I asked for it as a Christmas present because of the price. I could NEVER justify an excuse for a $300 purse... Anything else, I'd rather buy for $20something at Target or whatever.

I bougt a fake kate spade in cozumel one time. I didnt even like it that much. it was too small and wouldnt hold all my crap in it. So I eventually handed it over to goodwill when I did spring cleaning.

ZTAMich 08-25-2008 05:00 PM

$300 is a lot for some people, but I try to not pay full price. I tend to search for the deals at outlets or sample sales. I'd rather pay more $$ for a bag that will last and is a classic then spend $20 on a target bag that will fall apart!

Yep, that's the only place I buy mine and they are less than $200.....

See, and I understand that logic, but it's not for me. I get BORED with any bag that I have within a couple months and want a different one. It makes more sense for me to get a $30 or $40 bag (not usually Target, usually more like Kohl's) and get a new one every season. My dad bought me a wonderful handbag when he was traveling in Korea on business. It's eel skin with lambskin lining. It's unbelievably durable and a classic style. I carried it for a while, then really wanted something different. I keep it and bring it out every 3rd winter or so to use it again..lol. Then it goes back in storage for a few more years. I don't really care if mine fall apart quickly because I don't want them for long. (that's the same reason that I can't imagine getting a tattoo... I like change!)

This is what I was going to reply with - I need an excuse to buy a new bag because I'll get bored with the one I have and want something different. If I spent that much money on a purse, I would force myself to use it for a really long time to get the money's worth out of it....and then I'd be mad that I was "stuck" with that bag when i really wanted something new.

To each her own! Occasionally I'll want a fun little purse that I see at Target that I can throw away if it gets screwed up at a ball game, but mostly, I like to carry a nice purse. I will switch between my coach purses for different seasons...dark brown or black for winter; pastel stripe for spring; tan leather or signature fabric for summer. They last forever (except the fabric ones which I already said I wouldn't buy again!:) ) and never go out of style. When I was a poor student, I got a new Dooney every year for Christmas. We could always find a nice marked down purse at Dillards. I never paid more than $150 and used them for YEARS. Now, I could care less how much they cost....they're less than Louis Vuitton.

ZTAMich 08-25-2008 09:07 PM

^^ that's my thing, if you can use a bag for YEARS, it's so worth the price!

:D i can laugh now at it. but at the time it was soooo embarassing! now, most of my stuff is in an XOXO wallet with a strap and thats all i carry!

Benzgirl 08-25-2008 09:55 PM

I have some expensive bags (Dolce and Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, and a Louis I won't carry because of all of the fakes). I also have some Coach, which I don't really like, DKNY, Cynthia Rowley, etc. These bags are classics and I can use year after year.

I also have bags from Target. There is a reason for the Target bags... for something trendy. But, Target does not use counterfeit material. And the government is not seizing the bags and burning them because of the knock off.

I'll say it again. I HATE FAKES!

I'm pretty much the same way. I have 3 Coach bags that I carry around to death and I would never give them up. They're always my go-to bags, even with some less expensive alternatives hanging in my closet. I find myself picking them up, time and time again and I'm not bored yet! IMO, I think it is worth it to pay a bit more for something that is classic and will last for years than to keep spending 30-40 bucks every season with faulty zippers and loose threads. I can't bring myself to buy knock-off!

agzg 08-26-2008 04:45 PM

My Furla's going to be buried with me - and it's not even that well-known. So soft.

jitterbug13 08-26-2008 04:47 PM

I'm glad that this thread has started because there are now Goachs in my house!!!! :(

It all started over the weekend, when my mom's secretary said she brought back some Coach purses from NY and she had some for my cousin. When I arrived home from work last night, three purses were in the living room. The first thing that gave it away was that they were not in the brown bags that you get when you buy your bag. They were in some white mesh bag.

Upon further examination (after I woke up this morning), I determined that the bags are true Goachs. The locks has Coach on it, the store tags were wrong (they had some Chinese writing on it) and the decal tags were all wrong. Then my mother tells me that none of the bags are mine, but asks me would I like to have one. I said "um, sure" just to be polite. I don't have the heart to tell here that they are just as fake as a Christmas tree in a box, but I don't want to be rude and ungrateful either. What am I to do? :(

agzg 08-26-2008 04:49 PM

You should have said "no, thanks, enjoy" considering you weren't the intended owner of the purses anyway.

jitterbug13 08-26-2008 04:51 PM

No, my mother was going to try to get one for me through her secretary. The ones that are in the house were already claimed (two for my cousin and one for my mother).

I know it might be hard to find a way to tell your mom with out seeming ungrateful but for her dignity and yours DO NOT LET HER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH THAT BAG!!!!!

amycat412 08-28-2008 01:02 AM

on the flip side of this issue-- my mom bought a bag in a thrift store for $3. IT IS A LAMB BAG. My cousins and the adult daughters of her friends all said same thing when we saw my mom w the LAMB bag: "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?!"

agzg 10-24-2008 08:42 PM

I thought of this thread the other day. The Coach outlet was having this massive sale (with lines going all the way out the door) where everything was at least 20% off (keep in mind, this was an OUTLET, too, so things were already cheaper than in the stores), so live-in and I went in to look at possible Christmas presents for his mom. We ended up settling on live-in and his brother getting her a HOT PINK signature print, ginormous bag, and I got the matching wristlet for her.

When I asked him "Are you sure this is your mom's style?" he said "Have you ever SEEN her purses? She loves pink, and loves this print so much that because she can't afford it she's rockin' Goaches like it's her last day on Earth."

I had to laugh so hard at that. Hooray for saving live-in's mom from Coach knockoffs!

AnchorAlumna 10-25-2008 01:44 AM

If the bag is good quality, I really don't care that it's a fake. And I've had a really good quality Kate Spade fake, direct from Times Square. The label was glued on and came off pretty quickly but so what? Didn't care about that anyway. Fake or not, it's going to wear out, and/or you'll eventually get tired of it or find it doesn't fit your life anymore.
To me, it's just wasteful to spend a mortgage payment on a handbag.
Ah well. Thanks to the economy, many of you will be learning that bitter truth soon.

Honeykiss1974 10-25-2008 05:01 AM

If these bitter economic times has a lesson for some people, I think it's moreso one of living within your means as opposed to saying "it's ok to carry a fake bag now that you can't afford a real one". There is a BIG difference between carrying a fake bag (Goach) and carrying a bag that you can afford. Even before I was able to afford designer bags, I would not buy a fake Goach or whatever - I carried what I could afford, where it was a Tar-jay bag or something from JC Penny. Back when Wilson's Suede and Leather was still around, I bought quite a few of their handbags as well.

Hey Benzgirl - send me your LV and I'll carry her! :D Screw the fakes! If I didn't use something because it was faked, there would be a lot of things I'd miss out on such as cosmetics, toothpaste, jewelry, etc. Today, almost everything is faked. :(

Most fakes are NOT good quality - they certainly aren't as good quality-wise as the real thing. That's why they are cheaper. It's not either or - either you carry the real thing, or you carry a fake. There are PLENTY of good quality affordable bags - I'd never spend a mortage payment on a bag, good economy or no. My real Coaches are Willis bags and while never really "in", they will never be "out". The leather is fabulous - and they cost less than $400, if I remember correctly. I've never purchased a bag at the Outlets, but it sounds like that is a way to get an affordable, REAL Coach bag.
Also, fakes are violating copyright. I think cheating artists and craftsmen out of the money they should earn for their designs and handiwork is wrong. It's not just the designer who loses out - it's all the people who make and sell the designer bags.

Benzgirl 10-25-2008 12:44 PM

Buying an authentic handbag doesn't = spending a mortgage payment on it.

Some designers have Outlet stores. You can also get good deals at stores like TJMaxx & Marshalls from time to time. Then there's always the department store clearance sections.

I have a hard time understanding why one would go and purchase a fake LV, Gucci, etc or whatever when they can take that money and get a nice handbag from a less expensive store like Nine West, Calvin Klein, etc. Sure it's not a high-fashion designer bag, but I don't see the point of trying to look like you have an LV when you really don't.

jessica.lanelle 10-25-2008 02:24 PM

I have to agree with not liking fake bags or other accessories for that matter. It is annoying to spend my hard earned money on something nice to see someone else with a knockoff. Just my 2 cents :)

1. - What happened to little girls carrying a cutesy Hello Kitty or Strawberry Shortcake purses? Yall know all she has in there is crayons, stickers and chapstick (or at least that's what I carried in a purse at her age. :p )

2. - A fake Louis? I'm surprised her mom's handlers let this slip by.

Could this be Mom's bad? I don't know of any kid that carries a bag that big. Even the kids I saw with real Louis' in LA didn't carry the big ones. They were at least Hello Kitty size.

I know some girls that have knock off Tiffany jewelry and Coach purses who look down on girls that have the real versions saying that they're materialistic
