But you are a family. You just don't make a big deal out of it or give yourselves a name. Some chapters do. Different strokes for different folks.

In my undergrad chapter, the families are named after the founding father that they could trace back to. Mine was Drewry.

I don't see families as cliques really, at least in my chapter. It can make a chapter seem smaller and easier to access, especially for new members, and it can also help bridge the gap between pledge classes as well as between collegians and alumnae. I was pretty shy at first when I joined, and I definitely would not be as close with my "family" members as I am now had I not been placed with them and included in family events, etc. Big-little relationships tend to be pretty close in our chapter, and essentially having a "family" just builds on that- kind of like meeting people through your friends. I don't really see it as being that different from other subgroups within the chapter (like we have prides, etc) except it's more long-term and usually much closer. I certainly don't think they break up the overall sisterhood in any way.

We do have families within my chapter but they're not heavily stressed, although everyone knows my family in particular because we're "The Spanish Family" and it's a sort of dominant common trait for us :D My big is suuuper white bread but is obsessed with everything spanish (and hispanic) and she found me and fell in love bcs I'm half Mexican and speak spanish, and then my little is just like my big and my g-little I found during rush (from across the room!) because she's Dominican haha...we just can't help it, we seem to gravitate towards one another inexplicably :rolleyes:

I knew as soon as I posted it written that way that someone was going to misconstrue what I said. It was meant to be glib and not all that serious, I didn't really want to bore everyone with the details of my Big and I becoming family. Suffice it to say she and I did not become big and little merely because I'm hispanic and speak Spanish; she and I have an incredibly close relationship, we just happened to initally connect over that common bond.

I know a KD that was in the "O'hana family"...i thought it was ADORABLE!!

Mine is the Stonehenge family because my big plays with her food and makes mini Stonehenges when we go out to dinner. We have 13 girls in 7 generations who all try and get together every month or so. Families aren't necessarily a huge deal to my chapter as a whole. but mine gets along really well and has gotten really close.

Oh no, I knew that there were others before me, I just meant between myself and tinydancer...86? whichever the one above me was. Sadly I discovered after making my username that it wasn't nearly as unique as I thought it was and just haven't gotten around to changing it....someday:rolleyes:

I'm a member of the mighty LION family, because we all have big, long, thick hair and tend to take on the leadership roles of our chapter. Other families in our house include: the Goddess Family, Barbie Family, Food Family, Monkey Family and Bunny Family. We have a lot of fun with it, buying stuffed animals and such for initiation night.
