I know I'm a little late for dinner here, but I would go with MAIN.

.....Kelly :)

minDyG 02-27-2008 04:08 AM

Side.

AlwaysSAI 02-27-2008 04:51 AM

Maybe it's cause I'm still in college and I eat cheap food, but I'm going with MAIN DISH!

AlphaFrog 02-27-2008 06:18 AM

It depends - was that the first thing you picked off the menu, or did you take awhile to decide on that?;)

And if there's so much cheese on it, that you need bread to soak it up, and you're drinking a hard cider with it, what does that make it?

AGDee 02-27-2008 07:16 AM

I always considered it a main dish but my ex-husband considered it a side. I still eat it as a main dish, especially at work for lunch.

(ETA: Fights over such things can lead to divorce, hence the ex-husband designation!!!!!!!!) ;)

scbelle 02-27-2008 07:29 AM

It's a main dish when the hubby is in the field or deployed. It's a side when he's at home, although, truthfully, that doesn't happen because we don't tend to eat mac-n-cheese when he's home. We usually stick to a protein and a veggie. And by veggie, I do mean something green. I had to chuckle about the Luby's or Cracker Barrel menus that list mac-n-cheese as a veggie. :p

Scandia 02-27-2008 08:19 AM

To me it is a main dish. It has enough protein and calories to be one. Besides, I'm vegetarian.

Screw it, I'm going with SIDE.

If you put just mac and cheese on the table, people will be hungry again in an hour. You need a protein. The fake cheese isn't filling enough.

ETA: just saw your answer, if it's coming out of the blue box, it's definitely a side, IMO. 'k, am I done now? ;) :)

what if you cut up some hot-dogs to throw in there?

A heart attack waiting to happen? Not like that's ever happened to us. And by us, I mean me, naturally.

Well then it's not "just" mac and cheese, you're treading into casserole territory.

cool.

i made casserole (almost, i don't have one of those rectangles)

srmom 02-27-2008 11:49 AM

When I was little - main

Now, side - most often with a pork dish, somehow cheesy noodles just go well with pork tenderloin. MMH Good!!

NutBrnHair 02-27-2008 11:55 AM

Vote early and often...

side dish

catiebug 02-27-2008 12:01 PM

Well, it makes me hungry, if that helps!

I'll make sure you do. If you don't, then I will.

MysticCat 02-27-2008 01:23 PM

From Scratch with real cheese --- Side
Blue Box --- Not worth serving or eating

fantASTic 02-27-2008 01:28 PM

Definitely a main dish. I would never go through all that trouble for a side dish.

..I'm definitely a student, eh?

Exactly.

catiebug 02-27-2008 02:32 PM

But sometimes it just hits the spot!

When I lived in Chile for three years, the only place I could get Kraft Mac&Cheese was from the American Embassy's commissary (yes, we could shop there). As much as I was craving it, I couldn't see spending $5 a box on it. When my mom came to visit, she brought me some in her suitcase. :D

No, it doesn't. Not ever! :p

SWTXBelle 02-27-2008 03:14 PM

I'm still recovering from my years as an Air Force brat - the blue box mac and cheese with Spam is PX friendly kinda meal. Blech!:p

honeychile 02-27-2008 03:34 PM

The very first day I had home-ec, the teacher asked if anyone knew how to make Macaroni & cheese. A lot of us raised our hands, and then she said, "Without the box" and I was the only one with my hand still up. She asked, "so how do you do it?" I answered, "first you make a white sauce..." and the teacher was so shocked that I knew how to make a white sauce that I already had an A by the end of the day.

In answer to the poll: both, but mostly as a side.

Army Wife'79 02-27-2008 05:09 PM

Southern Living has fabulous mac & cheese recipes. I vote Main meal b/c that's how I grew up, that with a side salad and dinner was done.

Benzgirl 02-27-2008 06:45 PM

So, what is the tally?

This reminds me of our deep fried mac n' cheese nuggets (with fries!) that we serve at the bar I work at. It's a "pub and grille," but don't let that fool you. It's really just a bar that sells food.

iotamason 02-28-2008 02:42 AM

side dish

Sounds like a tasty case of high cholesterol.

SoCalGirl 02-28-2008 03:29 AM

If it's Kraft just say no. If it's Velveeta gimme more.

I vote main because when I have had it as a side it seemed strange.

AGDee 02-28-2008 07:29 AM

Even my kids don't like the blue box one anymore. My daughter likes the Velveeta shells with broccoli. It took a while, but I have convinced her that there's not enough broccoli in there to count as a veggie.

DSTCHAOS 02-28-2008 08:52 AM

Kraft = no
Velveeta = yes
Velveeta with steamed broccoli = hell yes

That is macaroni and cheese.

epchick 02-28-2008 07:19 PM

Mmm this thread made me crave some of my tuna casserole.

So I took out the blue box and had it as a MAIN dish!! lol
