You'd be surprised how UNcommon sense it is to not have pictures of your drinking on Facebook. I frequently have to go through and clean up my profile after someone else I know gets in trouble. Whoops...

Because colleges tend to take large amounts of girls from certain areas (for instance, KC and Wichita at KU), it's easy to "facebook stalk" a PNM because she may be a friend of a friend of a friend. I'm pretty good at digging up dirt, I must say. Making your profile friends-only is not enough to keep that stuff from prying eyes.

However, I've known many girls who joined top houses with TONS of incriminating pictures, listing "drinking and boys" as their interests, the whole nine... sigh.

Or just be a lady.

It has been my experience that any sorority that took a girl with a blatantly inappropriate profile ended up regretting it in some way. There was a girl who came through my last year of recruitment whose profile pic was of her doing a keg stand. Her interests included (no joke) "jagerbombs, blacking out, not going to class." Holding a drink in a pic does not bother me at all, but every single one of her pics was of her chugging stuff like 151. She was also obnoxious in real life. She ended up pledging a sorority, coming to the house drunk during her NM period and attempting to break things.

Hahaha wooow... That's a classy broad.

I can't imagine a girl like that getting a bid from anyone at my school (well maybe except for one org), and my school isn't even that competitive.

I do think its very important that PNMs are very cautious with what they put on facebook. Many sororities on my campus do a lot of research as soon as they meet a PNM...get the list of names of women coming through recruitment...etc.

As the Recruitment Advisor for my chapter I am going to challenge them to really find out as much as possible about PNMs...not saying that a beer in hand is a bad thing...but people tend to create a facebook page that really describes them.

Western Carolina University does not have a competitive greek system. Political, Religious and other campus affiliations would certainly not have any bearing on releasing a woman from recruitment.

I do agree with the posts with PNMs stating interests as "Smoking Weed, Blacking Out, Not Going to Class" as red flags.

Underage students also must be very cautious if they have pictures of them drinking or partaking in illegal activity especially in dorms on campus as many of the Resident Directors and other higher ups on campus can use those pictures as evidence of underage drinking and have sanctioned students based on that...

In a nutshell...make sure that you make your pictures AND profile viewable to friends only...the privacy level for pictures is different than the profile... the end :)

Am I the only one who thinks that Facebook/Myspace are going to get to the point where everyone's being so careful with their profiles (and everything else on them) that they'll just vanish?

I mean, if everything is "private" it kind of defeats the purpose of networking.

sarahsmilehawk 07-03-2008 05:35 PM

Facebook has never really been about networking, IMHO, despite the term "social networking site." The general attitude is to make friends only with people you know, or at least people you sorta know. It's more a way of keeping in touch with friends and classmates and the like.

On Myspace, however, it's much more common to make friends with someone you don't know at all.

I have to disagree with your Facebook comment. While that may very well be the case right now, it really wasn't like that in the beginning.

I got a Facebook Beta account in 2003. I remember adding a lot of people I didn't even know. Of my entire Friends List, only about 1/4 of them were people I knew IRL. Back then, people just kinda added whoever in the same network. It really was about networking because you got to know more about that guy who sits across the lecture room in your Poli Sci class. At least that's how it was on my campus. They never had the option to keep your profile private, either -- just like MySpace.

Even to this day I use Facebook to network and MySpace to keep in touch with friends...the exact opposite of what you do.

I miss Facebook Beta. We didn't have to worry about shit like Applications then. :(

I agree with most of your sentiments, except that I enjoy the applications which I've added. (I just don't normally like anyone else's lol)

I was among those envious people who was mad that my school wasn't good enough for a facebook network at first lol

I guess I don't mind the applications so much because you can control what's on your own profile...it's the 'effin application invites that piss me off. I swear, if people invite me to join Mob Wars one more time...

And ditto about not being good enough. I don't think the University of Hawai'i got on the bandwagon until Round 2 or Round 3.

Changed ASA to SDT and I agree. Even if you do enjoy that, there is no reason to have it in your profile.

To add to this...I hate hate hate seeing people with all the drug applications like dope wars, etc.
