I still have a question for you:
Have you spoken to anyone about this besides this board?
To be direct: Have you taken any time or made any effort to talk directly to IFC or Student Affairs Office at school?

UTLonghorn2012 03-04-2008 02:08 AM

Yes. IFC said that it is entirely up to the individual fraternities who they admit to their parties and that the rush website would be up later in the year. Rush does not officially start until late August, according to IFC, but "officially" was pronounced as though it were italicized.

As a general rule, most places that have a website tend to put all the information they want you to have on the internet. IFC has official policies and then from what I've seen the fraternities have different rules of their own. Rush "officially" starts in late August, and theoretically you should be able to walk up to a house and meet the guys and get a bid. But from what everyone except IFC is telling me, that is not the case.

Which is why I came to this site, because I was hoping to get responses from people who are a little closer to the way the process actually happens.

bowsandtoes 03-04-2008 03:57 AM

IFC is us. They know exactly what the deal is but will tell you what the University has mandated they tell you. Call/email your friends from high school, they'll set you up. There's nothing more on here that will help you.

Dude, I gotta tell you.......let the websites go. Second, we are IFC, the fraternities. Members from our houses make up IFC.......so you shouldn't be getting one thing from someone like me and another from IFC.

I've told you everything you should know. Yes, technically formal rush is in August. However, most houses are going to start way before that, especially during the Summer. That's why it is important to go to rush events and be around during April, May, June, and July.

As far as getting a bid, that is incorrect. You shouldn't expect to walk up to a house, meet people, and get a bid. It takes a little more effort than that. We don't just hand them out to everyone that walks through the door.

Do you have any friends in houses here? Do you have any friends that know people in houses here? That will help you tremendously.

UTLonghorn2012 03-05-2008 01:20 AM

Yes I know. I was just pointing out to jon that Greek Life is basically saying everything on their website that they are going to tell.

And I know the "walk up and get a bid" thing doesn't work. However, that's a traditional image of rush (at least that's what I though of rush before I started reading on Greek Chat), and that's theoretically how rush at UT works.

I've been talking to my friends and I'm more likely than not going to round-up, I just didn't want to limit myself to looking at those 2-3 houses when there are so many at UT to choose from.

macallan25 03-05-2008 02:43 AM

Dude there are way more than 2-3 houses that do Roundup events.

southernbelleQT 03-05-2008 07:38 PM

hey yall, for the sororities is it the same way? are the sorority PNMs allowed to go to the fraternity parties at roundup too? do we have to get wristbands too?

Oh I realize that, I should have been a little clear. I meant that there are only like 2-3 houses that I really have friends in. There are others that may have people from my school I know by sight or by name, but don't really know.

I was just wondering if I would be left out because I don't know anyone at the other houses.

utexas88 03-23-2008 03:52 PM

I also go to UT and know the rush captains for several fraternities. PM me if you have any questions about roundup/rush in general

Sorority Recruitment thread maybe the better place for this question.
Or this thread will be hi-jacked.
As it has been;):D

srmom 03-24-2008 12:03 PM

Lots of senior girls go up for Roundup. Many go and stay with girls that they know at UT. Just keep in mind that you are being observed by actives, and your behavior at the parties can either reflect well or poorly on you. In other words, be on your best behavior - don't make a spectacle of yourself.

FSUZeta 03-24-2008 01:44 PM

to reiterate what srmom said, if you are a sorority pnm and attend a fraternity party, be on your best behavior. you will be under scrutiny by the sorority women who are in attendance.

remember, you can attend plenty of fraternity parties after your recruitment-four whole years of them. why take a chance?

macallan25 03-24-2008 03:17 PM

Yeah.......you really don't have to worry about going to parties if you are a girl.

Why yes, I do. :)

I'm curious to see how this will affect him come this fall. Would transferring schools even help any? I assume he's screwed no matter where he goes, especially after this.

At any major school in the South every fraternity has at least one member reading that board...yeah, he's screwed. And alot of minor schools, but the fraternities there might be needing members enough to not worry about it. Texas is badnews bears because I know there's alot of fraternity men who read it from there.

Funny thing is, I know a lot of people from that high school. I had one friend in common with him on facebook as old as I am.

CrackerBarrel 05-19-2008 07:40 PM

That would be blackball city for you son.

Maybe Texas Acacia is giving bids? Maybe. Wouldn't be surprised if they walked you out too. Hilllllllarious.

I believe I've located the thread in question.

How did they match him up? Is it having forum user names in facebook or myspace profiles?

CrackerBarrel 05-19-2008 08:21 PM

He's got the same username here and there. And I would assume he probably had his email address public over there and then you can just search facebook for who has that email address. That's how most people get outed at least.

And just an aside, has the other site been down for a few minutes for anyone else?

Working for me.

The thread is named:
An Outing To One-Up Zissou

If you were looking for it uga. The best part of it is that it wasn't singular at all (or double, just here and FH) he found like twenty different websites plus posted his phone number.

Yeah, it just seems a little sad to me since nothing I read by the guy outed seemed that bad. Sure, posting what you've recently learned about greek life on one site on another site like you're an expert probably isn't advisable, but what I read didn't reflect THAT poorly on him really, except the volume of registrations maybe.

On a different note, I wonder how many people on Greek Chat are lurking on FH or Old Row? How creepy is that for you guys?

What maybe a better question to ask is how many people on FH/OR "lurk" in GC.

I don't know. Greek Chat seems very open to all ages and walks of life. As long as you aren't especially rude or clueless and don't misrepresent yourself, you are probably going to be welcomed or at least tolerated here.

The other forums seem much more geared towards a certain kind of current college guy or recent alum.

Only creepy cuz it's probably nationals.

wolffootball37 05-19-2008 09:36 PM

Sorry for my ignorance but whats FH and Old Row? Other Greek boards?

CrackerBarrel 05-19-2008 09:46 PM

"Fratty" sites (both copycats of fratty.net before it went offline)

It's a bunch of SEC, FSU and Texas guys mainly from the real southern houses.

Yeah, I was about to say, I didn't think FSU had many great posters on there...

That guy with the LeSabre was pretty cool and tough though.

He went to one of our rival high schools, actually. I think I even recognize his name, but I'm several years older... maybe he had a brother or something. Sucks to be him.

srmom 05-20-2008 09:48 AM

Have I missed something huge? What outing? And who are y'all talking about? I'm clueless, but it sounds bad.

JennRN 05-20-2008 10:24 AM

srmom, we are in the same boat! I'm clueless as well! And now I want to know what hs in Dallas...

He was posting both here and on another site which lets just say is much less rushee friendly.

And it's Jesuit in Dallas.

JennRN 05-20-2008 10:59 AM

Ohhhh. ok. That was our brother school when I was in hs.

I still am clueless to what all has happened here.

This threads OP was also posting on at least two other "Greek Sites".
One of which, as prior poster indicated, is not rushee friendly.
They pulled up all his prior postings (including GC) as well as facebook account et al.
IIRC, parts were shown here as well a bit ago.

nate2512 05-20-2008 11:30 AM

He actually joined the Acacia group they listed for him.
It was quite an impressive out.
