Just to make it clear, I'm not defending the store owner's actions or attitudes. But scoobis is being the equivalent of people who go through rush, don't get a bid, and then say "all the Greeks at my school are stuck up jerks/alcoholics/etc. and I am above them."

Apparently my definition of hypocrisy is different than most people's, so we might as well agree to disagree on this one.

If you (either you personally or you as a group) find someone's business distasteful, you don't ask them to donate money. I hate Walmart, I don't care how much they've given in the past, I won't go in that store and ask them for money.

As you obviously find this man's business something repugnant, you shouldn't have gone in there to ask for money. Let another brother do it. If you as a group are against tobacco use, it's really hypocritical to ask a tobacco seller to help you in any way.

I'm sorry i did miss the point. Personally I don't find the man's business repugnant. I love cigars, he saw me put out a cigarette before i entered the store. I told him i did enjoy his business too i remember saying, "From one smoker to another..blah blah" but i was half kidding about it. I just found it funny that someone that sells deadly things like cigars and cigarettes, (and i do love both) was worried about a bad image because of a charity.

Um, no. Scoobis is being the equivalent of someone going through rush and getting cut because of having brown hair, when the entire chapter has brown hair.

You are completely missing what is going on.

wow...i did not see this turning into a defense/attack on my integrity...(thanks for defending me though) but i just wanted to point out that it sucks being judged for the letters on my chest. Simple enough...i gave that man every reason to think i was a well-mannered young man and he was rude and a bit ignorant. It sucks, i'm not getting a $100 check from him...but the nice older women at the gift hop next door did write me one and say that it was a noble cause.

I just thought the situation sucked....enough said. I'm sure everyone here has been judged because of their affiliation...i'm sorry i opened this can of worms with san Francisco and brown haired kids and MacDonald’s...

Threads on GreekChat tend to get that way. :o

Yes, it does suck to be discriminated for your letters. But it's easier to just suck it up and move on because you won't be able to please everyone. If we waste all our time trying to convince those people that we're well-mannered not at all like those Greek stereotypes, we might overlook those nice old ladies at the gift shop next door who'll actually want to support us.

Let me get this straight. You smoke? Stop being a self-loathing smoker, dude. It's lame.

deezeelove 02-08-2008 12:33 PM

at our campus, they had free speech day...the president of student government association decided to completely insult our sorority and yell out false information about us....now half the campus is trying to petition to get him out of office(and this wasn't brought about by a sorority member). in our community, most greeks are well respected, so this was a big shock to all of us.

This is so unusual to me. I lurk on many forums. I was even a member at Oink Pink Palace which was an awesome file sharing site. If you know anything about the site (if not read about it on Wiki) the forum rules were strict. The only avatars you could have were cute. They also had very strict policies on threads going off topic.

You can click on any thread on this site that is over 3 pages and read the OP comment and then the third page, never the same topic.

How has this thread gone off topic? The OP is still in the discussion and the nature of the business he brought up is still the main issue.

Yours has been the most off-topic post so far, ironically.

Well, until mine, that is.

Day13 02-08-2008 01:33 PM

From my memory the OP question was:
"Have you ever been discriminated against for being Greek?"
and the thread is now onto:
"You're a hypocrite." "No he's not." "You're a smoker too!"

Notice I intentionally used the word "unusual", not necessarily good or bad.

There is no need to be presumptuous or to attack me. People should really attack the ideas, not the person.

I said that it wasn't a good or bad way to conduct forms. Once again, unusual. If you want to look up the word in Merriam-Webster, you'll see it does not have a negative connotation attached, you just put it in there.

And going further with the idea of being presumptuous, I said it was a file sharing site. How do you know that I did not exchange only copyright free music such as Brad Sucks. Perhaps it was music that free of charge like the new Radiohead album that was released recently?

Perhaps this is the reason why you disagree with the OP comment so much. The store he went into made an assumption about his organization like you are doing now.

This, of course, is just observations.

Silly goose, I am using Godwin's Law in hopes that this thread will just DIE DIE DIE. I don't know what Brad Sucks is, but if you're talking about the vaguely Neanderthal looking Brad from that one season of Real World, yes, I agree, he sucks.

Day 13 pay no attention to the bigots who respond. They've obviously been brainwashed already. P.s. Thanks for your work on oink.

1. Off topic. Who cares? As always, it doesn't make sense to announce that a thread appears a little off topic. DUH. Bring it back on topic or stay on the sidelines.
2. Attack the ideas and not the people only works when it isn't perceived that the people have some "problem" that drives their ideas.
3. Something's humorously wrong with 33girl. :p
4. Dionysus extended the olive branch to herself? :( Yikes.

Dionysus 02-18-2008 10:59 PM

The stuff I overlook on these boards sometimes...

I, ummm, do not recall ever extending an olive branch too myself. It may have happened, but I do not remember this.

Yes you did. This was back in your SH80 days (under two totally different usernames). I remember John letting us know that the two posts came from your same IP address. I'm sure the mods from long ago remember!

It's pretty ballsy to say that because he's Greek he's associated with underage drinking...

...and then, yeah, sell cancer. It may be legal, but it doesn't make it right and I wouldn't by that holier-than-thou attitude from the shop owner either. We all know LOTS of kids smoke underage, too, and even when it's legal it's still just as bad for you as alcohol.

And that's coming from a smoker.

Within the first week or so, some of my "friends" stopped talking to me, and most of the people in the religious organization started ignoring me whenever I would go to the weekly meetings. Things will change when you go Greek, but you also find out who your true friends are.

This really is the most horrible thing I have ever heard. It makes me so upset when people of religious organizations, of all people, judge others. Not that it's acceptable for anyone to judge anyone else, but my pet peeve is hypocritical religious people.

It's not a big thing, but in terms of discrimination...

I'm a student tour guide at my University. When families leave their info session, they're asked to divide themselves evenly amongst the 4 or 5 tour guides waiting outside. I've been doing this a few years, and without fail I get a MUCH smaller tour group when I wear my letters - usually about 1/2 the size of those of the other guides. It kind of ticks me off, because wouldn't you want to take a tour with someone who's obviously involved in student life? I think a lot of parents assume I don't take my academics seriously or am just here to party, Animal House-style. That's honestly not the case with me, but stereotypes are stereotypes.

Funny thing is, about 75% of the student tour guides are Greek (from a student body that's only about 20% Greek). A lot of us just don't wear our letters. So whichever guide they end up with, they probably still got a Greek! :D

I was a student tour guide. We were advised not to wear letters during tours because some prospective students and their families were uninformed about greek life. We were called "Ambassadors" and wore shirts & jackets bearing that name in school colors when we gave tours.

We're actually told to look as much like "regular students" as possible, and wearing shirts and things from our extracurriculars is encouraged because it shows that we're involved (and that we don't just study all the time, which is one of the myths our Admissions office fights a lot). Of course we're required to look presentable - no gym clothes, torn/stained clothing, etc. - but they don't want us to dress up. I guess it's to give the visitors the real student experience.

Gusteau 05-07-2009 08:17 AM

We wear uniform polos four tours...

Anyway I've noticed that when I mention my extracurriculars during my introduction people tune out if I mention greek life first so I mention it last so they hear about all of the other stuff I do on campus and don't miss out on the more "conventionally worthwhile" (I hope that doesn't come off the wrong way) things I do. I am, however, the biggest greek life cheerleader on tours so I think I change their minds by the end.

You could be talking about my alma mater with the ratios. When I was a tour guide, though, we weren't permitted to wear t-shirts. Most of us did wear either our pins or lavaliers, though. It was a lot of fun when a parent would ask about it!
