When I rushed there were two RAs that were in sororities. They were in different houses. We all knew which house they were in, but they did not discuss rush with us or wear letters during rush. However, in my hallway only two of us did not pledge the chapter that our RA belonged to, and in the other hallway the results were similar. I think it is difficult when you get to know your RA so much better than any of the women in the houses. If you like your RA, you have a good opinion of her sorority.

There wasn't a Office of Residence Life rule against RA's participating in recruitment at my school, but they couldn't because the recruitment days would fall on weekends that they were "on duty" and not allowed to leave the building for any length of time. If RA's wanted to join a sorority, they had to wait until spring and go through informal/COB (since those events were held on various days during the week).

As far as RA sorority members, I know we excused RA sisters from recruitment, because those were in the evening and conflicted with their weekend duty schedules. We usually had them perform extra set up duties to make up for the fact that they were missing the parties. RA's were also exempt from having to live in the sorority house.

My chapter's president is an RA. She's super busy, but there's no rule against it.

melsigkap 01-28-2008 09:16 PM

I was an RA. There was no rule against it, but I could tell my supervisor was obviously not a fan. She tried to stay neutral though, which I appreciated. It was a very hard balance, I ended up not continuing this year.

There is no rule on this at my school either, although the common stereotype is that sorority girls party too much and drink lots of alcohol. This being said the person in charge may feel that you would be a bad influence on any other residents that are living on the floor.

Our school does have a rule that forbids freshmen from living with any other upperclassmen even if they are friends. This is to try and minimize the bad influences of partying and drinking on the freshmen.

Being an RA at my school was really more of an inconvenience for the chapters, rather than the Residence Life Office. Some of our "best and brightest" sisters were neutral RAs, and therefore unable to help with recruitment. This became a big problem my senior year because we had become more popular, but we looked small because a lot of PMNs came back and we had to double rush them. I think it's a shame when both organizations can't find a way to agree - we are all trying to help freshman women feel more at home on campus!!

Okay so I suppose I should finish up my story now that I've sparked so much conversation on RA's and Rushing.

So I went to Sensual Amber for the informal party. I was paired up with a really nice girl who showed me around the house & we talked for quite some time, then 3 more girls came over and all three of them were talking with me, we watched a really cute video about what it means to be a Sensual Amber, then I talked with one more girl. I saw several people I knew, including the girl who had shown me around a year ago at 07 informal spring. Many of the girls who I had met before knew me and mentioned how glad they were I was back. I had such a great time at this house! I was so nervous and excited I really hoped I would hear back from them!

The next day I was sitting in English when my phone started vibrating for a call and it was a weird number, obviously being in class I didn't answer, but checked my messages IMMEDIATLY after class... it was someone from sensual amber & they wanted me to call back. So I returned the call and I was offered a bid to Sensual Amber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

Before I accepted/signed the bid I needed to make sure it was okay with my bosses, and tell my parents. I hunted down my bosses; my male boss (direct supervisor) gave me the okay with no hesitation (which was SHOCKING) especially after the hard time he had given me before. Then just to be certain I found the building director to make sure it was okay, and she Okayed it too... Then I had to tell my parents, who were totally fine with it as long as it was my number one choice this time. (Which it was :)) So that night I went over to sign the bid.

Things are just really starting to get going now which is very exciting...
But I know what everyone is really waiting for (maybe I should have one more cliff hanger.....:p)

Blueink 01-29-2008 12:02 AM

And my apologies for starting the RA hijack ;)

GeekyPenguin 01-29-2008 08:26 PM

The college where I joined wouldn't allow RAs to rush their first semester as an RA. I didn't rush my freshman year because of a sports team rule, and I ended up turning down an RA position so I could rush sophomore year. I thought (and still think) it was a really stupid rule, but since there are a lot of local organizations on that campus that engage in hazing, I can see why they have it.

Deltazeta4ever 01-30-2008 06:52 PM

It's inappropriate to post it on GC.

some pnms may choose not to post their code, but it is not deemed inappropriate. i think it is fun to learn the codes and to learn what school the poster attends, but sharing that information is entirely up to the poster.

SthrnZeta 01-31-2008 02:49 PM

I'm with FSU, I love finding out the codes AFTER they receive their bid and have pledged. I don't see any harm in that.

Blueink 02-02-2008 11:54 PM

sorry but I'm going to pass on sharing the code.

violetpretty 02-03-2008 03:14 AM

Do you feel comfortable saying who Mango Mandarin is, since you really liked them and they were almost lucky enough to get you? (I didn't do a full reveal on my retro thread either)

Scandia 02-03-2008 09:09 AM

Woot! Glad you like Sensual Amber and Delta Zeta so much!!!
