I totally agree with this. A passport name change takes at least six weeks to process - maybe longer these days. If you're planning to change your name, use your maiden name for your honeymoon, and change your ID when you get back. (OTOH, if you're traveling within the US, you can change your driver's license easily enough - once you've worked your way through the wait at the DMV, they'll just print your new ID off and hand it to you.)

Really you just get a new license right then and there ?!!! Not in Cali... last time I get a new one took about 2-3 weeks to receive it by mail.

We were married in November and the first day of our "land" portion was Thanksgiving so we just lounged at the resort and had a really nice dinner.

Day 2: MGM
Day 3: Sea World
Day 4: Magic Kingdom

PreciousJeni....As far as paying for everything, you put the honeymoon on the credit card and hope you have plenty of cash gifts!!! We actually opened all of our cards the first night of the honeymoon and we had almost $2,000! A lot of guests went to the Cruise website and gave us onboard credits for drinks. Other people called the resort and left us credits for meals etc.

This was in Connecticut. I'd just moved to CT, so I wasn't just changing my name - I was doing an out-of-state conversion and registering my car. I had to wait a while, but they checked my marriage certificate, gave me an eye test, took my picture, took my MA license and registration, and handed me a new CT license, registration, and plates on the spot.

I wished they moved that fast in New York! It just took me 3 months to get the new title to my car - with my name change.

I'm in the minority with you. (And I love the Grove Park, too.)

We went to New Orleans. (This was many years pre-Katrina obviously). It was perfect for a honeymoon -- great food, great music, relaxing atmosphere. We could just sit in a cafe doing nothing and still feel like we were doing something. As a bonus, when we want to "relive" that honeymoon experience, say on an anniversary, it's as easy as some good CDs and some good Creole food. (For many years, pralines were a standard part of our anniversaries -- I need to do that again this year.)

We were glad we didn't try to go anywhere more exotic -- we would have been too tired to really enjoy it. But we did go to Hawaii (Oahu and the Big Island) about 6 months after our wedding. Perfect timing for a trip like that.

DSTRen13 01-11-2008 11:54 PM

We just got married (October 2007) and we went to Hawaii (Oahu) :D It was a lot of fun - somewhere we hadn't been before, that was completely beautiful with a lot of different things to do. We stayed on the opposite side of the island from Honolulu in a little rental house, so it wasn't crowded and crazy, but still easy to get everywhere with our rental car. Plusses about Hawaii: we didn't have to fool with passports and customs (and yet it might as well have been a different country from here!), and it was a compromise pricewise (not as expensive as a trip to New Zealand, not as cheap as just going somewhere in GA).

Anyway, loved it!

APhi Sailorgirl 01-15-2008 11:13 AM

We just booked our honeymoon! We are going on a cruise out of Puerto Rico. We hit, St. Thomas, Grenada, Bonaire, Dominica, and Aruba.

It leaves the week after we get married, so we may go down to PR a day or two early.

This way we have a break between the wedding festivities and then heading off. Unfortunately my fiance will probably have to work the week between.

First - do you know where you are staying? I would recommend staying on property - I think Boardwalk Villas are romantic without costing quite as much as Grand Floridian, Yacht & Beach Club - you can walk to Epcot, take a boat to Hollywood Studios. Polynesian would be great - take the monorail to the Magic Kingdom. I can personally recommend Saratoga Springs and Port Orleans, also. I have a great Disney travel agent, btw - let me know if you need her info.
EAT AT VICTORIA AND ALBERT'S at the Grand Floridian. Adults only, fabulous food - well worth the money for a fantastic meal. Cirtico's at the Grand Floridian is also great.
Go to the Adventurer's Club at Pleasure Island. I am not much on clubbing (although if you are, there's plenty at Pleasure Island) but I love, love the Adventurer's Club.
I think the luau is really neat and romantic.

What specifically are you looking for? Advice on rides, meals, romantic things?
Check out www.allears.net for menus and great trip reports.
I've got to run - feel free to ask or pm me with an specific concerns.

eta - my "don't miss list" -
Magic Kingdom - Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Splash, Space and Big Thunder Mt., Mickey's Philharmagic. Favorite restaurants - Tony's and the Liberty Tree Tavern - both for lunch.
Epcot - Test Track, Soarin',Off Kilter show (in Canada). Be sure to try the Beverly soda at Coke's Club Cool!!! Restaurants - it's hard to go wrong here - I always get good food!
Animal Kingdom - Expedition Everest, Finding Nemo:The Musical, Kilamanjaro(sp?) Safari, Dinosaur! Restaurant - the Yak and Yeti is fabulous!
Hollywood Studios - Rock N Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, Lights! Motor! Action!, Beauty and the Beast show, Fantasmic! Restaurants - Brown Derby (they have a great New York strip, but only at lunch), 50's Prime Time Cafe.

Water parks - I love Typhoon Lagoon - they have the Crushin' Gusher, which is a water roller coaster.

Downtown Disney - love the salt scrub at Basin, yummy sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich, Raglan Road Irish pub and restaurant (live music!), Comedy Warehouse, the aforementioned Adventurer's Club. If you can swing it, I understand the Cirque de Soleil show is great, but I haven't been able to do it yet.

Also, while I recommend you wear the buttons, understand that they don't entitle you to anything - it is up to the cast members to do whatever. That said, I've always had lots of pixie dust on my visits.

Day One: Magic Kingdom (make sure you see Mickey's Philharmagic)
Day Two: Epcot and Downtown Disney (eat at Bongo's Cuban Cafe, it's wonderful! ...also, don't forget IDs if you want to enter Pleasure Island)
Day Three: MGM (plan your day around the stage shows, they are worth it! also go on the Aerosmith ride and stay for the light show)
Day Four: Animal Kingdom and MGM (hit the safari as soon as the park opens; most animals are out in the morning when it's cool)
Day Five: Shopped, relaxed, and then headed home

We had passes to the water parks too and didn't use them because there was so much else to do. MGM was our favorite and we went back a second day to ride Aerosmith and Tower of Terror again, as well as see the shows we missed.

Book your trip with AAA if you have it. The deal we got was amazing! Make sure to go to guest services at the Magic Kingdom and get honeymoon buttons. They entitle you to free snacks, and jumping ahead in at least one line. Most of the employees saw our buttons and gave us the best seats on the rides, as well as discounts at some of the shops/stands.

If you like to get pictures with the characters, check out the shops in the Epcot countries. At the "England" Toy Shop, we saw Pooh, Tigger, and Eeyore all together and also Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland. There was almost no line because very few people knew they were there. Also, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom are the best places for photo ops with the big characters (ie - Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Chip & Dale, etc). See your maps for Mickey's Toon Town and Mickey's Safari Spot.

They weren't rude or particularly obnoxious, but we tried our best to avoid them so we didn't get stuck in long lines. Thankfully we didn't have issues because we used the fast passes A LOT (take advantage, the fast passes are your friends)! The only place that the lines were ridiculous were Soarin' and Test Track at Epcot.

WOW! Thanks for the great advice. SWTXBelle - aren't you a cast member at Disney?

I talked with the travel agent today at AAA. She has been there over 60 times (where SHE paid). We are planning at least seven days. Hopefully, we are going to be able to spend a day at Kennedy Space Center. There is a tentative launch scheduled for the space shuttle. Something on my "bucket list" that I will not probably ever get another oppurtunity to go and see.

I am still feeling really overwhelmed. She looked for romm rates at the Port Orleans - Riverside, Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary Resorts.

Kappamd 01-23-2008 12:08 AM

I've stayed at the Wilderness Lodge. Its really nice, especially if you like the whole woodsy, outdoorsy log cabin feel. There are some excellent restaurants, and a gorgeous pool area. It didn't seem to be too overrun with small children either. I would DEFINITELY recommend it.

AGDee 01-23-2008 12:23 AM

First honeymoon was a cruise to the Bahamas and it was very romantic and dreamy. The only good week of the whole marriage, truth be told, but it was great.

Second honeymoon was Hilton Head and that was nice too.

AOIIalum 01-23-2008 09:15 AM

Another invaluable resource for WDW is Passporter.com, along with my all-time favorite allearsnet.com.

We were married in my hometown and DH was in Boston, so most of his time off for the wedding was spent either on the wedding events or driving back and forth! So, we waited 18 months and went offseason to WDW for 11 days for our honeymoon. We stayed at the newly opened Caribbean Beach Resort (this was 1989) and went off-season. Even though park hours were shorter so were the crowds, so we saw and did everything we wanted and then some!

FYI--we stayed in Port Orleans-Riverside a few years back and loved it. Gorgeous setting and very quiet, even with a lot of kids around.

If you go with WDW, my suggestions are to skip parades (it's amazing what you can see/ride when everyone else is queueing up for a parade) and utilize Early Entry and Fast Pass whenever possible. If you have one or two "must sees", consider hitting them upon park entry regardless of what your touring plan says. Of course, make your dining reservations as soon as you can.

Don't miss: any and all stage shows not geared to the Preschool crowd; Fantasmic at the Studios; Mickey's Philharmonic, Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder, and Pirates at MK; Everest, It's Tough to be a Bug and the Safari in AK; and virtually everything in EPCOT (but don't listen to SWTXBelle about trying the Beverly!!!)

As for restaurants, do not miss the 50's Prime Time Cafe in the Studios! Never been to V & A's but it's definitely honeymoon material. Of course there are Boma and Jiko in AK worth checking out. We've never had a bad meal in EPCOT, either sit down or counter service.

SWTXBelle 01-23-2008 10:05 AM

Okay, AOIIAlum - how about make the new hubby try the Beverly and have the camera ready??!!!

And no, I am not a cast member, but I have passed a phone interview and am going to go to Orlando for a follow-up in March (or April) - not sure yet. I sure want to be one!!!!

ZTABullwinkle 01-23-2008 01:22 PM

I have tried the "Beverly" while at the Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta. That stuff is NASTY!

What is the Beverly? When I was little and went into that tasting room, I tried this clear concoction that was horrendous. I thought it was a Sprite type of thing. I was wrong, so wrong.

Munchkin03 01-23-2008 02:21 PM

The Contemporary Resort at WDW is great--and it's got a monorail stop right in the middle, so it was really easy to get around. Highly recommended!

SWTXBelle 01-23-2008 02:39 PM

Beverly is an Italian Coca-Cola soda - and it is bitter. People who try it unsuspectingly have been known to make very interesting faces.
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...sney06/192.png This is my son Jackson. I told him he would not like it, but he insisted. His sister took the picture.

BabyPiNK_FL 01-23-2008 03:45 PM

That stuff IS nasty. It's supposed to be like a "bitters" an apéritif type soda. The one from Israel that tasted like honey was amazing! They should sell that here. They should also bring back Citra to its original form and not Fanta Citrus which I can't find...

Disney is fun. I'd say MGM is great for a young couple and Magic Kingdom is good as well (if you don't mind all the babies!)

If you are married, where did you go? Las Vegas. We were going to do Cancun or Puerta Vallarta but SOMEONE (the husband) realized his passport would expire while we were on holiday. (he has a Canadian passport)

Would you wait to go on your honeymoon? We did wait to go on our honeymoon. We waited a long time (don't ask) :D

pinkyphimu 02-10-2008 02:26 AM

we just booked our honeymoon this week. we will be taking a 7 day cruise to greece and turkey and then spending 7 days in italy. i am pretty excited because i have never left the country. i just applied for my passport this week, too!

ZTAMich 02-10-2008 09:20 PM

We leave in a week for St. Thomas. SO excited!!! A week of sun & fun...just 4 months after the wedding.

amanda6035 02-10-2008 10:05 PM

Cancun

Actually, Playa Del Carmen. We went to the Adventura Spa Palace Resort. Weather was gorgeous - it was this past october. It was adults only and all inclusive. It was AMAZING. We went on a lobster dinner cruise, snorkeling, shopping, etc. The only thing I didnt like about that resort was that there was no BEACH to walk on (it was real rocky where we were). Cancun Palace was another adults only resort that we heard was good and had a beach. The company is Palace Resorts, and they have family resorts as well. I cant wait to go to another one =)

SthrnZeta 06-02-2008 01:15 AM

Has anyone been to Cancun for their honeymoon? Specifically the LeBlanc Spa and Resort? Trip Advisor reviews are awesome and the traveler pics are as nice as the brochure pics. :) And how far out would you book? A year? Thanks for the advice about waiting to do name change stuff until you get back - smart thinking, and waiting a few days to leave. Any other suggestions?

ComradesTrue 06-02-2008 05:25 AM

We went to St. Lucia and did the all-inclusive thing, which I do recommend. After spending all that money on a wedding, it was nice to not have to worry about how much drinks or a dinner would cost. We could order whatever the heck we wanted, and it was always "free."

For me, I was very particular that I wanted to stay within 1-2 hours of our time zone, as I did not want to deal with jet lag while on vacation.

WinniBug 06-02-2008 09:42 AM

We took a week-long cruise to Nassau, St. Maarten and St. Thomas

My lil sis leaves today with her new hubby (a Delt Sig) to go to Jamaica's Sandals resort. I believe they're going to be in the Montego Bay location.

Since my wedding and honeymoon are over I will comment again! We had the best time at our honeymoon in the Bahamas this past May 2008! We stayed at an all-inclusive resort and it was wonderful We never had to pay for anything. The weather was great, the water was perfect, and we had butlers who thought of everything for us! We also went snorkeling and kayaking which was amazing! We even rode the bus into Nassau one day and walked around in their shopping area. I had a great time! Now if only I still had my tan!

We are headed to a "Couples" resort. I believe it is called Negril. We are flying into Montego bay however. Either way, it should be a blast.

KSigkid 06-02-2008 11:37 AM

We went to Martha's Vineyard for a week; we stayed in Menemsha. We had gone for scattered weekends previously, but the honeymoon gave us an excuse to rent a cottage and stay the whole week. It was awesome.

We spent a week in the Pacific Northwest. Flew into Seattle, rented a car and stayed at a B&B for a few days and then drove down the coast and into Oregon. We stayed in Portland for a few days and then drove back up to Seattle to fly back out. Nothing overly fancy and certainly not the most perfect honeymoon, but it was nice. We were married in early September, so that limited some of the things we had contemplated (hurricane season).

We didn't, but I can see why some couples do, especially if they want to do a grand honeymoon but may not have the resources right away.

KSUViolet06 06-02-2008 01:40 PM

I second the point about putting a few days between your wedding day and leaving for your honeymoon. If you don't think you'll be up to leaving the very next morning, don't try to.

My friend booked a 6:00 am flight the morning after her wedding, and they didn't get to their hotel until 12:30 am. So they didn't get any sleep and were in airports all day, she says it was miserable and if she could have a do-over, she would have either left MUCH later in the day on Sunday or waited until Monday.

Good point. We left on Sunday after our wedding but we left at 12:30 PM. So we had time to get some sleep and then get to the New Orleans airport on time. My cousin left for his wedding at 5am the Sunday after his wedding. They planned on just staying up all night and partying, which really isn't my idea of fun, but each to their own!

hannahgirl 06-02-2008 08:57 PM

My husband and I found out about 2 months before our wedding that our original flight was cancelled and that we were placed on a flight that was leaving at 6:00am the morning after the wedding (i believe the original flight was for 4 or 5 in the afternoon).
I was planning on not sleeping a wink because neither of us had any time to pack (I was about 1/3 packed) and we didn't get home until 11:30 that evening. Thankfully we checked our answering machine and they called to tell us that our flight now was pushed back to 12:30pm. THANK GOD!!! We got some rest, packed, and even had a chance to go through all of our cards from the wedding.

I felt more prepared to go on our honeymoon with just a difference of a few hours than I would've if we left at 6am that morning.

Bump (because we don't have enough wedding threads, obviously)

My fiance and I have pretty much decided on Hawaii for our honeymoon, but are completely torn about which island to visit, where to stay, etc. We are leaning towards Maui, but are totally open to suggestions. Any opinions on the big resorts (the Westin, Hyatt, etc.)?

Any other exciting honeymoon plans all you brides-to-be?

DreamfulSpirit 05-21-2012 08:35 PM

My husband and I went on a cruise last year for our honeymoon. We went on the Oasis of the Seas with Royal Caribbean, which is technically (by 2 inches) the 2nd largest boat in the world! We went on a 7 night cruise to the Bahamas, St Thomas, and St Maarten! We LOVED every minute of it!

I keep telling people that the hardest part of planning the wedding for us was planning the honeymoon! We love to travel, so trying to decide where to go was the hardest part!!!

FSUZeta 05-21-2012 09:11 PM

KappaMD, my husband and I went to the big island of Hawaii for our honeymoon back in 1985. We stayed near Kailua-Kona and loved the village & the black sand beaches. We had a rental car and drove up into the mountains on a road that a villager later told us was haunted (we also learned that we should not have driven the car on that road, as the rental agencies do not want their customers on that road), but we spent that day circumnavigating the entire island, and loved the experience. We were there the first part of June during the anniversary of King Kamehameha's birthday and they had a huge parade-it was fabulous!

We were friends with several couples that had honeymoons on Maui, and they all loved that island. One couple stayed near Hana in a condo and the highlight of their trip was a whale watching excursion.

My SIL and her family went to Kauai a couple of years ago and loved it. I think they stayed at a Sheraton-wherever they stayed the hotel was right on the beach.

I don't think you can go wrong honeymooning in Hawaii!

I went to the big island last July and fell in love with it immediately. I would highly, highly recommend it. We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa, which is on the dry side of the island. It's all lava rocks and white coral and sparse scenery. Then if you go over to the wet side, it's all lush greenery. Just amazing.

My parents have been to Kauai, Maui, Oahu and the big island, and liked Maui and the big island best. They say Maui is the most traditionally tropical. My mom did say that Kauai would be awesome for a honeymoon -- very romantic.

I've been to Hawaii twice.

The first time, I was a small child. We visited Oahu (Waikiki) and Maui. Even then (and we're going back - let's just say more than 20 years) it was very touristy - ginormous hotels, good luck getting a spot on the beach, etc.

The second time was just after I earned my bachelor's degree, but I was traveling with my parents - IIRC the trip was part of my graduation gift from them. We went to the Big Island and Lana'i. On the Big Island, we stayed at a resort outside Kona. We rented a car and drove around the island (my dad even let me drive the rental - surprising since he knows I have a lead foot), and we saw whales. :) Lana'i at the time was just starting to be developed. We took a puddle-jumper so tiny that we were asked to give our body weight when checking in. There were two main hotels - Manele Bay and The Lodge at Koele - sister properties. If you want peace and quiet, go there. If you want adventure, Lana'i is also a good spot - we hired a Jeep and guide for a day and drove to some beautiful locations on the island. And my father fell in a hole. (He was not injured.) LOL

My favorite out of the four was the Big Island. Although seeing my dad get stuck in a hole is a close second. LOL
