I do agree that the early Looney Tunes stuff had its racist stuff in it, but like others said, it was the times. I'm speaking primarily of the stuff I saw from 82 to roughly 95. As an adult you can see the undertones but as a kid you just see a cartoon. Its like how kids love Shrek but the adults get all the jokes.

It was and that movie made such big headlines when it came out because of all the offensive material that movie theaters went overboard in making sure children under 17 were not admitted. At all the theaters by me, they checked your ID when buying the tickets, checked your ID again when you walked into the theater and then had two security guards standing outside the theater to make sure that nobody snuck in. I remember getting up to use the restroom and having to do a security check when I walked back in. And the security guards sat there and scrutinized my ID because I was only 18 at the time and they thought my ID was fake. Ridiculous....it was just a damn movie.

Anyway, it's funny what I never saw as a kid and now understand as an adult. There was a Disney cartoon I saw a few months ago (can't remember which one) that I hadn't seen since I was a kid. I remember thinking, "Oh wow...there's a lot of innuendo in this movie!" but I never picked up on it as a kid.

I got in, and I was 16. And I still get carded NOW for R-Rated movies (true story - the lady at Walmart wouldn't sell me Terminator 3 because I didn't bring my ID). That will be forever known as the "Zack Morris" date. My friend set me up with that one - and he showed up wearing penny loafers, faded jeans, a sweatervest and had poufy blond hair - in 1999. If he would have made one Saved By the Bell reference, I would have lost it.:p:D

When I went to see SP in the theater with a girlfriend, we sat behind a nine year old and his older brother. If you've seen SP the movie, you know there is a bit in there that involves a dildo. There is an assumed sexual relationship between Satan and Saddam. We were 20 something at the time, and could understand what the references meant, but to hear a 9 year old ask, "What is that? Why does he have it under the covers?" was a bit disconcerting.

And my first question: WHAT THE HELL WAS A NINE YEAR OLD DOING IN AN R RATED MOVIE?? And South Park at that.

There are some cartoons that my daughter was not allowed to watch.

SOPi_Jawbreaker 11-21-2007 09:49 AM

I think some people don't bother finding out about a movie before they go see it. When my friend and I went to see "Good Luck Chuck", there were these two little old ladies that sat down next to us. As soon as they came in and sat down, I thought "Do they know what this movie is about? Do they realize it's supposed to be raunchy and nudity-filled? I bet they're totally going to end up walking out of this." And sure enough, as soon as the montage of sex scenes started, they left the theater.

Senusret I 11-21-2007 09:49 AM

I used to go to R-rated movies at that age.... my uncle was manager at a KB theater in the DC area.

My mom would take me to the violent ones but not the sexual ones. I remember seeing Black Rain and Dead Poets Society in particular.

ETA: I just found out that Dead Poets Society was rated PG, which I think is way too low for the content.

Ahh, the memories.

One of my classmates bought the dvd set my senior year of high school. We played it one day in class- more than half the class was singing along.

I too though this when a female friend and I went to Knocked Up and a group of people about my grandmas age sate down a few rows ahead of us. However, when the raunchy humor came I think they were laughing just as hard or harder than most of us "youngsters".

We still have SS and ABC's and 123's videos from my youth. I think they've only got a few more years of life in them but my little bro and sis love 'em. *shrug*

nikki1920 11-21-2007 11:13 AM

When HP3 came out, my daughter wanted to see it. I told her I had to see it first to see if it was too scary for her. At the time, the Dementors would have been too much for her to handle. She didn't see it until last year, and that was in our living room, together. I use sites like Movie Mom and comments from other parents to judge whether or not she can see PG movies, or I just go and see it myself and make the decision. How hard is that?

DSTCHAOS 11-21-2007 11:14 AM

I loved Song of the South.

It was quite telling but I was too young to get what it was telling. :D

Looney Tunes' racist cartoons aired everyday in the 1980s and early 1990s, as if the cartoons were brand new. They were from the archives but they looked recent to us.

I was 5 in '82 and 18 in '95. I remember the after school cartoons that I watched before I felt too grown to be watching cartoons after school (which happened like, yesterday :D). Stuff like Darkwing Duck wasn't offensive besides the speech empediment (and did the evil person have the typical foreign accent?).

I had just graduated from college when SP the movie came out. It was a big deal for my friends and me because we were SP dorks. I didn't know you were younger than I am. :)

I was most amused at Satan's solo and subsequent high note. Great freakin' movie. "Abooot."

nikki1920 11-21-2007 11:27 AM

The MUSIC!!! I love the songs. The UN meeting! Ike's harmonica solo!!! The USO show!!

It's true. Why do something if no one is focused on you?

Back to the cartoons...when my kids were little, we had a complete ban on Barney in our house. One of the best decisions we ever made as parents. There is a new pre-schoolers show on Nickelodeon the big kids like for the music cartoons, I can't think of what it's called right now but I think it has punk/ska type references??? the one clip I saw hada ska guy singing about cleaning up your room...hilarious.

Yes, it was Uncle F*****.

I was trying to give it a little bit of dramatic effect.

LOL

On the other hand, a lot of people younger than 40 don't know about that movie since Disney hasn't re-released it on video and is one of the few films that hasn't.

nikki1920 11-21-2007 01:25 PM

oops.. my bad.. I stand corrected.

I'm under 40 (by 10 years) and I remember that movie AND the read along book and 45 that came out with it.
"when you hear this sound: DING! that means, turn the page! Ready? Let's start our story"

Are you talking about Yo! Gabba Gabba? That is the weirdest show I've ever seen, it is as if the members of Dee Lite decided to make a kids show. My other half wants to take visuals from that show and maybe some music, and mix it with bad club music for a party we're having. I think we're calling it "Club Subpeona" and it is going to be a tacky late 90's club with lots of shiny clothes and strobe lights. I also want to "serve" people with invitations.

Yeah we're dorks.

bejazd 11-21-2007 03:36 PM

Yo Gabba Gabba

Yes! I haven't actually seen the show, just you tube stuff. But I have seen the Agrolites and the Aquabats.

Yeah, we're dorks, too...

Was is by any chance Hunchback of Notre Dame? That movie is full of sex. I would NEVER let my little sisters watch that movie. That man is singing all about "Hell Fire" and how he wants Desdemona, etc. etc. etc. CONTROL YOUR LOINS DISNEY!

True! And Miss Francis...and what would the PC of today think of the 1930s Popeye cartoons we watched on TV in the 1950s...and the violence of Tom & Jerry (*gasp*), not to mention RoadRunner cartoons!
Yeah...I've already had my knees replaced.

Well it's still up for date based on the PC implications.

To some it's a peice of art entertainment history and to others, it's offensive.

I saw it when I was a child and remember my mom was kinda wierded out after seeing it. She has said that it was the first time seeing it as an adult and now I understand why.

Most of the anime out there still has a lot of Adult situations and plots that kids under certain ages shouldn't be allowed to get exposed to.

...and let's not even get into hentai....

So true! That situation makes many anime fans, including myself, mad. The thing is that we here in America view anime as cartoons for kids. That's why some of the best non-kid anime shows are not shown in America. The only two channels that they show this stuff is Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and The Anime Channel. Reason why they won't show other shows on television (even on the movie channels) is because of content, like nudity.

I want to make one thing clear, just because there is nudity, usually doesn't mean it's porn.

But here in America, many people view nudity as evil. Hello? What about the nude statues made centuries ago? Are they evil? No.

Another thing is that there is a certain anime show that I would like to see, but I would have to pay $80 for a DVD set of four or five episodes (that would equal close to $500 for the entire season set). One top of that, I would have to buy a multi-region DVD player. Also, if there was an anime that is avalible in America that is English dubbed. For the entire series or season, I would have to pay $40 or more for that, which is ridiculous.

If the parents don't like the material on TV, they should turn off the TV. Let their kids read a book. Books are great. On that note, even some manga books are censored.

By the way, what do you guys think about Dora the Explorer? Sorry that this a long post, guys.
