Depends on where the OP is going. Sure it could be a problem.

We had a couple Asian girls in my chapter and we referred to one as the "Asian Sensation!" She embraced her nationality but also very much embraced American culture, as she was born and raised in Northern VA. She made fun of herself all the time and it was never an issue that she was "different." She was an awesome collegiate member and now she's a leader in her alum chapter. Of course we all knew she came from different origins than most of us, but it was never an issue...ever. I am proud of my diverse chapter! I think even an all white group would accept you. I'd say the only thing you need to worry about is your Junior standing - but again that depends on the school...

What is this?
Crouching Rusher, Hidden Intake.....sheesh If you think your race is keeping you from joing a GLO then maybe you shouldn't join said org...it's only a problem if YOU make it a problem. |

No GLO is going to care - even if it's an NPHC, I've seen white girls in those orgs. They may "historically" be whatever, but it's all about your beliefs and what's in your heart and if those beliefs match those of the organization you want to join.

And these jokes can be interpreted by outsiders as you making your "asian-tivity" material for laughter. You and I are friends and we feel comfortable with each other. But this arguably isn't much different from "asian sensation." ;) |

That's lame. If censorship was absolutely necessary, just delete that person's PM that I posted and her post that quoted me. Not the entire back and forth just because it made her shed a tear. |
What did I miss?

This thread has turned into the starang and dstchaos thread. ahahaha.
As for her making fun of herself and being the "Asian Sensation"...I know many Asian Americans would think that role really puts them into a certain category and thus not like it. However, one person (for anything) does not speak for the group or represent the group, so whatever floats a persons boat. And btw, APIA Greeks do have some history... www.pialphaphi.com www.sigmaomicronpi.com just a couple... www.napa-online.org |

They have under 15 chapters, unlike (most) D9s, NPCs and IFCs. I guess that makes them more exclusive, but I don't know. Knowing how some Asian parents are, I'm not too sure if your typical parent would go around saying "My son is a Pi Alpha Phi" or "My daughter is a Sigma Omicron Pi" all that much, unless these kids are legacies. People would be "wha???" People are just more familiar with D9s, NPCs and IFCs. If the immigrant family hasn't heard of these GLOs, their neighbours might. |
Taualumna,
I'm not sure what your point is. Where was I saying parents would go around saying those things or anything related to size and exclusivity? I was referring to the fact that there are other options out there and that APIA Greeks also have some age. |

Unless you are ready for the firestorm that is coming, I would be careful of what you say and how you say it. |
I'm always humored when people predict firestorms and stuff. :)
So, what's so "firestormy" about what Taualumna posted? |
Quote:
That's why so many parents want their kids in the Ivies or other well-known schools. I'm sure that being in a historically Asian fraternity, you would know this. To me that statement came off wrong (my interpretation). Why is taualumna so "sure" that L.O.C.K. should "know this" coming from a historically Asian fraternity? In general in her last two statements, imo she seems to be painting Asian/Asian American parents and families as solely interested in status. In general she still seems to be taking the stance that NPC/IFC/D9 have a monopoly on pride because they are older. And chances are that the "immigrant" family isn't at all aware of any type of GLO, especially not by name, to glean any sort of "pride" from the organization that their child is seeking to join. |

Maybe the assumption is that people equate age of the organization with deep rooted racial and ethnic traditions or something. |
