I'm surprised it's not 100% on HOPE since the admissions standards are so much higher than a 3.0 these days.

It really had just gotten to be a totally different place academically. When I went, a B average and breaking 1000 on the old SAT would have been plenty good enough to get in, but today, forget it.

If 90% of the students are on the academic Hope Scholarships and then some are on Div1 athletic scholarships, who is paying tuition? Is it all out-of-staters or legacies who didn't make the Hope cut?

Well, the taxpayers of the state of Georgia (or maybe more accurately, the lottery players) are paying tuition for the HOPE students, and with no one really paying attention since they don't pay out of pocket, tuition per student is up.

But yes, out of staters and the students who don't keep the 3.0 once they are there pay tuition themselves.

I know one family that is paying tuition -- OUCH!

Nope, it's for all 3.0 GPA from public high schools, I think.

You can use it at any public college, and there's a partial private school amount you can get too, but it's not going to go too far.

And I haven't seen data of how many retain for a while. The rate varies widely by which high school system the kids come out of.

For an internship while in college I did some research about programs like the George HOPE scholarships. Somewhere around 50% of freshmen lose their scholarships after their freshmen, but not just for not maintaining grades - not meeting the credit and/or paperwork requirements has been an issue.(*Note: my research was mainly in around 2005, so most of my knowledge is a couple of years old.)

If you google Georgia HOPE results or something to that effect, you'll see that the 50% figure hasn't changed much lately, although they are / have recently raised the standards to receive it.

They changed the requirements this year. There was a good article in the AJC about a week ago explaining the changes. But basically honors classes are no longer weighted. And, with the change it should help weed out students who really were not "B" students but rather "C" students which resulted in their admission but not being able to sustain the grades needed to keep HOPE. They are expecting the retention figures to be higher this year from this class based on the new change. There were many Georgia kids who had expected to get HOPE and only found out a week or so ago that they didn't get it.

As for what HOPE pays -- it does pay the tuition and fees and some towards books, but the fees amount had been capped awhile back so it does NOT cover UGA's current full tuition/fees and basically nothing for books. As for the class not to be at 100% I, too assume because of the out-of state attendees. Seems to be many there from Virginia/DC area and Texas.

Also, we learned that at Auburn if you are from out of state and received enough internal academic scholarship money that equaled the in-state tuition then the out-of-state tuition is waived. I understand that they do this to compete with the HOPE and get some of the otherwise UGA or GA Tech kids. It also helped a lot of kids who got deferred from UGA or not admitted -- they were offered a great opportunity and price from Auburn.

Not just public. Any GA HS including Home school. And it is $3000 I think if you attend a private college -- or maybe it's only $1000 - I forget. But they changed HOW the GPA is calculated to make it more "even" across the high schools.

Hmmm...Are you saying that if you are a Georgia high school grad and eligible for HOPE that Auburn will honor your eligibility by waiving out-of-state tuition? I hadn't heard of that. I know there are tons of kids from metro Atlanta at Auburn. I have an eighth grader who likes Auburn. :)

2) I know I'm old and all, but I'm seeing a fashion trend here that I'm not familiar with. Can someone tell me about the dresses these girls are wearing? Some of them look like tablecloths - not in a bad way because some of them are really cute - but I don't know how else to describe them.

3) I am so mad that these spoiled girls get tents. LOL! :P

No. Not with the HOPE. But let's say that your son or daughter gets a scholarship offer from the Math school at Auburn that = what Auburn's in-state tuition is....THEN they will waive the difference of in-state vs out-of-state tuition so basically you become just like an in-state student. But of course you would not be using any HOPE money.

So just for numbers sake: Auburn tuition in-state is say $4000 and out-of-state is $14000 (I don't know the real costs)

Your student gets $3700 academic scholarship from Math school and $300 from some club or sport scholarship (or wherever from Auburn) then that would = the $4000 and you would be considered "in-state" and the other $10k is waived. Make sense?

IF this does happen to your student and let's say he is "off" by $300 when the new tuition rate is published, then I suggest you get on the phone and work hard at getting the original scholarship increased so it does match. Hope this helps!....BUT....GO DAWGS!

Hehe I have the same hairstyle and I am not in the south! Call me shallow but I was checking out the cuteness of all of the sundresses. Up north there isn't as much of a selection as I imagine in the sunny south. I actually saw a pink Lily Pulitzer dress at a shop while at Cape Cod last week and thought, this is a perfect rush dress!

I didn't know they did this, but I do know that there are also certain majors where you get in state tuition--common market majors that are only offered at certain schools in your region that are not offered at a school in your state. One of my daughter's friends is at Alabama in the musical theatre program and gets in-state tuition. One of the most popular majors for out of staters at Georgia Tech is Nuclear Engineering because it's a common market major.

Also, because they've lost so many out of state students from GA in the past ten years since HOPE started, Jacksonville State charges in state tuition to Georgia students from a group of the border counties (none in metro Atlanta, though).

Thanks for the enlightening information. I have heard of the common market majors. It is fascinating what impact HOPE has had on Georgia's neighboring states as far as educational opportunites! Presbyterian College in SC also offers a scholarship to Georgia h.s. graduates who are eligible for HOPE in order to attract them to their school. Sorry to totally hijack this thread, but this is so interesting to me.

I'm going through recruitment this year at UGA and have been a lurker here for ages...thought I'd make my first post. :)

1) The Recruitment Counselors decorate their blue vests any way they want to. If they glue anything on they have to pay to keep the vests, so a lot of them used buttons or stickers to show some personality.

2) Dresses are vital to living in Athens, and plus there has been a big increase in them in the fashion industry, so there have been all kinds of dresses. Some of which I don't quite understand and I've caught myself staring at the weirdness a few times..:eek::p

3) The tents are lifesavers! Without them I'm sure they'd be a ton of cases of heat exhaustion and such..

4) Almost everyone wears flipflops for round 1, 2, and some for round 3. It's a pain in the butt to drag around a pair of heels, walk up and down sorority row, and deal with the pain.. I don't know what I'd do without the flip flops, besides get blister after blister.

5) Yep. But oh, the sacrifices we make for beauty... :D

So is this Hope scholarship available to all Georgia HS grads? regardless of the parent's income? do you have to have lived in the state for a certain period of time or have filed state tax returns there? and I take it that the amount does not cover living expenses (i.e. dorm room and board.)

my kids aren't quite old enough for college yet but it's looming on the horizon and sheez when we add up the numbers of what's its going to cost to get these kids through undergrad, my husband and I look at each other and thank God we both graduated with zero student loan debt. Then my husband thanks my mom for feeding him a lot of dinners at her house while he was a starving student!

I think I would have had panic attacks if I would have been expected to find money for school. With interest it adds up; and I went to cheap schools! :D Thank Daddy for ZERO debt! :p

I know its available regardless of household income. And its funded by the state lottery. So one out of state friend jokingly referred to it as reverse welfare.

Its like their Christmas!! I've seen numerous fender-benders too on Milledge on Bid Night. My favorite are the trucks with couches, lounge chairs, baby pools...they go all out. And of course, the streakers!

The Zeta house at UGA looks EXACTLY like the Zeta house at Alabama.

The cops were out in force last night along Milledge. The were pulling over carloads over sororty girls bringing back their new members as well as cars full of guys checking out the new girls.

What is amazing is they allow open pick-up trucks full of people to travel, but ticket SUV's for carrying too many passengers.

In the pictures you'll see the party bus. The party bus was full of guys traveling around looking at girls all night. The traffic was bumper to bumper on Milledge so they would be "parked" in front of the sorority houses with a close-up view from their bus. It was hilarious. they would circle by every few minutes.

The girl far right in that pic looks exactly like Mackenzie Roseman from 7th Heaven.

Do all the new members have to wear white dresses for bid day?

The UGA recruitment booklet tells the girls that the majority of sororites will have them dress in white dresses for Bid Day.

However, when they receive their bid, they will receive instructions on what to wear with their bid, and they have time to change from 5;30 to when they are pick-ed by the sororities @ approx 6:30.

But yes, the majority of sororities have their new members in white dresses on bid day.
