I don't want to be a heel and wedge into your shoe puns, but I just couldn't resist!

Anyway, I really hope she decides to keep with recruitment. Stress is a hard thing, but She really should give all her options a chance. She doesn't have to accept a bid, but she'll never know if her perfect match is right in front of her unless she sticks it out!

Best of luck to her!

FSUZeta 08-14-2007 05:06 PM

oh darn(as in socks), you all beat me to the shoe puns. anyway, i hope that
southernpromise finds the best fit.

ps: i love the shoe names. we have a shoe thread in the chit chat forum.

Good luck!! :D

Great advice! :)

This is excellent advice in many areas of life. For example, there's "tent talk" in graduate school admissions, too. I got into an ultra-elite graduate program at "XYZ University" that's everyone's first choice -- except mine. Many of my college classmates applied and didn't get in, and they were putting a lot of pressure on me to go there: "No one turns them down! I can't believe you're even considering saying no!" I was sick to my stomach worrying because I knew I preferred a different university, but everyone was telling me that I was crazy to turn down an opportunity to go to that program at XYZ.

Finally my mother said to me, "You know all these people who are pushing you to go to XYZ? They won't be there to cheer you up when you are lonely and miserable at XYZ next year." That really woke me up. It's ME who has to live with the consequences of this decision, not them. So it's easy for them to push me where I don't want to go. And I turned down XYZ.

I recently took my first tour of Milledge Ave and was in love with so many of those beautiful houses - I hope you find your home in one this week! Best of luck to you, Southernpromise!

southernpromise 08-15-2007 01:05 AM

pumps: i had the same girl from yesterday so i didn't have to do the whole small talk over again and the conversation we had was just dead on, we talked like old friends. i really connected with their philanthropy and overall this one is my favorite as of right now. i know my mom, since it was her house, would love it if i joined here but we'll see.
i went to five houses today! oh my gosh the skits were amazing and hilarious and this was definitely my favorite day so far!
wedges: this is my other legacy house. i'm not sure I would fit in here but I would be willing to give it another look around. I'm not really sure that i'd like to pref here though.

stilettos: all the girls i talked to were so friendly. and everyone is saying this chapter is coming out and is going to be so awesome. i don't know that i'll actually fit here, but everyone i met there was very outgoing.

flats: this was my second favorite house of the day, their skit was definitely the funniest and i enjoyed the girl I talked to so much more than before.

boat shoes: the skit was great and funny, i think i could really shine here. but the girl i talked to was less than engaging and kept running out of things to say and asked me if i had any questions about 8 times. it was weird

sneakers: i can still really see myself here, it's so homey. their skit was hilarious and very fitting for the entire experience.

i just don't know what to think. i have favorites, but i'm really worried about tomorrow so I don't want to get my hopes up! i hope prefs is as amazing as everyone makes it out to be!
and thanks for all the advice y'all are making this so much easier!

kathykd2005 08-15-2007 01:28 AM

Prefs are definitely going to be amazing!!! They really are beautiful and you will remember them. Good luck!!! :)

Sounds like you are in the enviable position of being caught between all good options. You'll make the most out of any situation you find yourself in, so just go with your instincts.

southernpromise 08-15-2007 08:36 AM

ok, i have my list.
i'm going back to two.

boat shoes and stilettos.

we'll see how this goes. i'm a little nervous, they weren't my top picks but my rho chi said I should go to check it out and I could find my home. i hope shes right.

FloridaTish 08-15-2007 08:54 AM

I know this has probably been a super stressful week for you, but I think that having TWO parties to go to today for Pref is awesome! It's obvious that the girls in the chapter see something in you and are sincere in their invitation to their Pref party.

My suggestion is to take a deep breath, go to both parties with an OPEN mind and see where your heart takes you. In your previous posts, you've said positive things about both these chapters, so remember that one girl who might not have had the best rushing skills should not deter you from being a member of a sorority with 150 other girls...who might just be your kindred spirits waiting to be your lifelong friends...

Give it a chance and don't lose heart. They are a lot of girls who either got released from recruitment or dropped out completely, I'm sure who would love to be in your place right now!

Best of Luck!

AlwaysSAI 08-15-2007 09:01 AM

Great job southernpromise!!!! Keep an open mind and positive attitude. Also, I'm sure it's already been said, but during each party take a look around the room. Those women will most likely be your pledge sisters.

Listen to your heart, southernpromise! It will lead you home!

Army Wife'79 08-15-2007 09:36 AM

Rushing Skills

As she said above, not all have great rushing skills. My D went to a house that the rusher spent her ENTIRE time talking about the TV show "Laguna Beach" which my D had never seen in her life. So, she smiled and nodded the whole time. She basically gave her an update on the entire cast of characters with story/plot lines. D walked away thinking "okie dokie then" but oddly enough they preffed her.
Good luck and have fun.

mystikchick 08-15-2007 10:30 AM

Good luck at prefs :)

ugadg 08-15-2007 11:53 AM

Good luck! Can't wait to find out who all the "shoes" are....

FSUZeta 08-15-2007 05:18 PM

good luck southernpromise. be sure to look around the room during prefs. and see who your potential new member sisters might be-that might help in your decision making.

notyouraverage 08-15-2007 06:01 PM

Prefs has been over for hours! Where are the updates??
From the other side, however, I can say that I had an amazing time. The girls I preffed were sweet and wonderful and I had a great time pouring my heart out to all of them. I'm a crier, and I can't lie, I did shed a few tears during our ceremony (thankfully not during my conversation with each girl!). I hope my girls were as touched as I was!

DoctorD 08-15-2007 08:07 PM

Classes start at UGA tomorrow, and bid distribution is at 5:30 PM. Bid day activities start at 7:30.

I'm just imagining the women sitting in class tomorrow unable to pay attention!

At my undergrad, for half the classes the syllabus and booklists had already been posted online for at least a month before you ever set foot in class, lol.

UGATammy 08-16-2007 08:46 AM

I'm so anxious to hear how the girls did!

No word since before prefs......:confused::(

DSTRen13 08-17-2007 12:01 AM

If you go to prefs, does that mean that you will get a bid? (You'd think I would understand all this by now from being on this site, but I don't think I'll ever understand NPC recruitment ... too complex ...)

The chances are good that you will. Especially if you list all the groups that you attended as groups that you would join. UGA will also promise* a bid to a girl who lists all the ones she was invited to, so if she went to both and listed both, she got a bid.

ETA: They don't actually promise a bid. But a girl is only eligible to be a quota addition if she lists them all. So it does add to her chances more than just added another group does.

AGDLynn 08-17-2007 07:03 AM

But if you are given a bid, you don't have to accept.

She may be too busy with her new member responsiblities and/or catching up on sleep.;)

Ocalagirl 08-17-2007 09:14 AM

Please tell I am really wanting to know where you ended up!!

southernpromise 08-17-2007 10:44 AM

I am so sorry I made you wait! I didn't want to talk about my pref parties until after it happened. I am the happiest new member of...
