Actually, I mentioned this once in the "Places you've seen your letters..." thread, but it applies here too: I once saw a homeless guy in Malibu digging through a dumpster while wearing a Theta lettered sweatshirt. I got a good laugh out of it (and I don't mean any offense to Theta).

just let it go. if you decided to do something about it and it escalate, imagine the negative thing that could happen to your fraternity or your chapter. bad publicity, lawsuits, etc. this is where risk mgt come into effect. is it worth it to do something about it or is it more safe to just let it go?

I wouldn't stop laughing either, it'd be the beatdown of the century. As one of two martial artists in my chapter, I encourage violence :P |
The best way to handle a situation like that is to initiate your call-response or fraternity grip....
it would throw them for a loop and might embarass them... we had some schmuck show up all ghetto wannabe Jamie Kennedy looking telling us he was a UC Berkeley brother. Go to the Berkeley chapter...and while not IMPOSSIBLE, it's pretty unlikely he was affiliated there. So I said "oh that's great, glad you're visiting." He failed all three tests I gave so I finally said "Okay what's your badge number" he answers "uhh 254" I said "oh that makes you about 100 years old since the chapter there started in 1892...." booted his ass out. The moral of the story: check first, get miffed later. Just because he doesn't *look* Alpha Beta Gamma doesn't mean he's not Alpha Beta Gamma....we got bros from all over the country who all dress different, speak different slang, are different colors, etc etc. and the only way you're truly know is by checking.... |

Quite possibly the funniest and most appropriate quote ever. |
Seems like a question to be brought up at the next JA. Haha.
And on another note, Hooters, you shoulda came out to Summerfest like some of the bros from your chapter. It was mad live. |

Besides, I think I would have been clearer about what to do if I saw someone get hit by a car. :p Quote:

wow morpheus, you're number 43 too! Best number hehe
You've reached a pretty high number already considering how new your chapter is. I'm assuming you guys must have a really good reputation on campus and have very successful rush (how large are your classes on average?) |

We pretty good here at Toronto. Most people recognize our letters and who we are. The only thing is greek life is not fully recognized by the university so we can't actually register it as a student organization. So far our class sizes have been pretty good. In order, Charter: 12 Alpha: 9 Beta: 7 Gamma: 6 Delta: 9 We missed out on a class for Spring 2k7 so we hoping Fall 2k7 will have a big class. |
Frankly, I praise God that I have the money to go out and buy a new shirt, and not have to be dependent on Goodwill, Salvation Army or such. If we can look at this and laugh:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Pi_in_Iraq.jpg I think we can all realize that, compared to the rest of the world, we're very rich, indeed. |
Nwu I understand your question completely. I've seen many Asian friends go through rush and the pledging process. In a couple ways I applaud Asian greek life as it fosters very close bonds, sometimes even closer ones than other GLO's foster. Of course you'd be miffed that some random person who doesn't know the significance behind your letters is wearing them, but like what others have said, there's really nothing you can do without harming the reputation of LPhiE and being an ass yourself.
I'd combine all the advice and say that if someone's acting obnoxious in your letters, and obviously wearing them to give LPhiE a bad name, do the brotherhood tests/your equivalent and when he fails them all, ask him (nicely!) to relinquish his shirt. If it's someone who just thought the letters looked cool or something, walk up and go 'oh hey! Are you related to someone who's in LPhiE?' and take it from there explaining what LPhiE's about etc. They'll get the point. =) |

One of my brothers was in Tanzania with the Peace Corps and said that he would see people wearing old Greek-lettered shirts from time to time who had no clue what they meant. Apparently a lot of the clothes donated in this country wind up for sale in markets in Africa.

Why do people think that just because they're offended by a non-member wearing their letters, the offender is just going to relinquish them happily? They could give a rat's ass what the hell those letters mean to you, it's a piece of clothing and it's covering them up. You can't ask a homeless person to give up their shirt because you don't like it.
Unless you're Macallan. Then you get threatened with a knife. And then cut. Damn SAE perps. Always with the knifing and the drinking. |

Calm down folks, you'll notice that I wrote 'acting obnoxious and to give the frat a bad name' (or something like that, bit too lazy to quote what I said. =P ) And I put nicely in parentheses, and might I remind you that these are suggestions. Way to jump all over someone's words.

If you read some of the earlier responses, asking them nicely and then offering to replace what they're being asked to give up can actually work. And again, these aren't just all homeless people who can't afford clothes. Non-members who wear letters can be regular people who are just clueless about what they mean and got them (who knows how... ) because they thought it looked neat. In that case, trying to explain everything to them is not a bad idea. And as shadowyi said, sometimes they could also just be jerks who are trying give your organization a bad name |
i agree that there's not much you can do if it's just some random person. maybe approach them and ask where they got their shirt, and get back any other para that might be for sale. now, if it was someone on my campus wearing letters that didn't belong to them, there would be confrontation. that's completely disrespectful.
