Favorite Chi Omega Alum

Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird has always been one of my favorite books.

AlexMack 07-30-2007 06:16 PM

Yo...gamma phis...are Gwyneth Paltrow and Michelle Kwan famous alums?

As a womens gymnastics fanatic, I'll go ahead and say that I think AOPi's coolest alum is Courtney Kupets. Seriously, have you seen her release moves on the uneven bars? That girl can FLY!

For us:

A sigma kappa won Roe vs. Wade. I think that's pretty big. I believe we also had the first female senator. Sigkapsweetie is changing her name to Meredith Grey as we speak, so I think she's a pretty cool alum too :D

SWTXBelle 07-30-2007 06:43 PM

porkfriedrice - Neither Gwenyth nor Michelle are initiated. I don't know if they have any other association with Gamma Phi - anyone else have info?

That's my source. So take it at face value as in it's myspace, so not much credence.

I don't think that they were initiated, but I found a website listing them as Gamma Phi Betas. Curious, because it lists some others that are indeed Gamma Phi Beta alumnae such as as Lynn Martin and Kelli McCarty.

SWTXBelle I can pm the link if you want to see it.

Ok, so the VP of Marketing from my chapter sends out monthly newsletters to collegiates, alumnae, and parents....and recently she's added a "famous phi's" section. She added Jodi Sweeten (Stephanie from Full House) on it a few times, and i've tried to tell her that she isn't a famous Alpha Phi. That if she was she would be mentioned on our sorority website.

Her answer, "Well i saw it on a school's 'famous phis' section...so it must be true." No it doesn't.

Sarah Weddington is a Sigma Kappa? I may not agree with her opinion(s), but she's quite a lady.

When I was in school, the big rumor was that Peggy Fleming was an ADPi. It was such a disappointment to those of us who love figure skating!

We got some pretty great ones even if they're not huge celebrities :D

I am ashamed of Barney. I'm really sorry guys :(

I heard there's an Alpha Phi pin on the moon. And pluto when pluto was still a planet!

Thetagirl218 07-31-2007 12:14 AM

As in many GLOs, there are tons of famous Alumni to choose from to pick a fav. Some of mine would have to be the following ladies, and each has had a connection to me growing up.

Laura Bush~ Whether you like her husband or not, this First Lady is awesome, and is always standing up for important causes dear and near to my heart such as education!

Amy Grant~ I grew up in household that listened to mix of Christian, Country, Pop music. Amy Grant has always a family favorite. My parents have old records of her's dating back to the 80s, and I even have video tapes of my little sister and I running around the living room, singing and dancing to her songs!

Kerri Strug~ I don't know about you but in 1996 all I wanted to be was a gymnast. Even though this would have never worked out because I am tall, not fexible at all, it didn't matter because I saw Kerri Strug and the US Woman's Olympic Team bring home the Gold. I will never forget being a ten year old and begging my parents to let me stay up late so I could watch the end. I was so sad when Kerri hurt herself, but did the vault again regardless!!!!!! In the mind of a sleep- deprived ten-year old, I remember going to bed that night thinking that Kerri Strug was my hero!!!

I am honored that she is fellow Theta sister!

SnuKnight172 07-31-2007 01:20 PM

Not so notable yet still famous SIGMA NUs

William Daniels - The Voice of KITT on Knight Rider and Mr. Feeny on Boy Meets World

Terry Kiser - Bernie from Weekend at Bernies

Josh Saviano - Paul Pfeiffer from The Wonder Years

(The Knight Rider thing is cool but Mr. Feeny?) I like them because people rarely know about these guys being Sigma Nus but I bring it up.

She's my favourite gymnast of all-time! Do you have her autobiography? I've read my copy so many times that it's falling apart. If I saw her today I'd go all squealy fangirl on her, I swear. It's funny because she says people don't really recognize her anymore or kind of do but can't place her. I was 11 when the '96 Olympics occurred and I'd turned on the telly and found the finals by accident (still living in England at the time) and actually got to see that history in the making. Incredible.

banditone 07-31-2007 01:39 PM

Mr. Feeny was cool as hell man

ΣΣΣMagan 07-31-2007 01:50 PM

ΣΣΣ Alumnae -
My personal favorite is probably Carrie Underwood.
Also, Billie Letts the author of "Where the Heart Is".
Oh, and Linda Denham, the creater of CareBears.
Gladys Morelock was the superintendent of the U.S. Mint
Krystle Kitchen is Miss Virginia-National American 2006/2007

Harper Lee

I hate to kill the Chi-O support of Harper Lee, but the recent biography of Ms. Lee, Mockingbird, discussed her sorority (the name wasn't mentioned) and implied that she didn't fit in and didn't like it. She is a bit eccentric but a great author, though. Of course, there aren't any truly famous AOII's happy or otherwise!

Dude I told you, Courtney Kupets. I love her! Occasionally when I need a gymnastics fix I watch my 2004 Olympic gymnastics videos on my computer.

I have read Mockingbird with great interest. As you state, it is a biography...not an autobiography. Nell Harper Lee is proud of her association with Chi Omega and we are very proud of her. I heard that she sent a FAX to our HQ not too long ago and signed her note, Harper Lee, Nu Beta.

Mr. Feeny was most cool!

William Daniels also starred in both the stage and screen versions of 1776 as John Adams.

SWTXBelle 07-31-2007 04:46 PM

icelandelf, I've seen both of them listed (along with Reese Witherspoon - what?) on various chapter and personal websites, but in the absence of a confirmation from IHQ, I have to say no.

Alpha Kappa Alpha woman Phylicia Ayers-Allen Rashad is my fave!!!!! I loved her sooooo much on the Cosby Show!!!

SigmaNuHX766 07-31-2007 05:09 PM

My favorite Alums from Sigma Nu are:

Bob Barker
Charles Schwabb (multi-billionaire investor/philanthropist)
Harrison Ford
Ron Evans (Apollo 17 Astronaut, the last man on the moon)

...though, I've gotta say that Sigma Phi Epsilon claims one of my all time favorite authors as one of their own: Dr. Seuss.

Tom Earp 07-31-2007 05:22 PM

Other than Myself who has busted his rear for 42 years, HST- as in Truman. While an honorary Member He loved LXA!:)

Each GLO has outstanding Members and I guess that shows something about what can and will be done by GLO Members!:D

I wish they wouldn't put these celebrity names up on their home pages without checking with the official Gamma Phi Beta page first. I think I even found one listing Kirstie Alley!

My favorite alums are Dr. Laurel Clark and Dr. Janet Graham:)

Fleur de Lis 07-31-2007 05:50 PM

Famous Kappas

My favorite famous KKG members are Kate Spade and Ashley Judd.

banditone 07-31-2007 06:12 PM

Just FYI, she isn't an alum yet. She's going to be a junior in the fall. Actually, that chapter has two other gymnasts who have impressive resumes, Audrey Bowers and Nikki Childs, as well.:)

Wow brainfart there, I was just thinking of famous members. She's still awesome. I never got to do gymnastics because it was too expensive (so much wasted talent *cries*) so I satisfied myself with an obsession later in life. Ironically horseback riding lessons were cheaper than gymnastics classes.
Are the other two national team members or just elites?

carnation 07-31-2007 10:07 PM

Pi Phi has a lot of famous alums but one of my favorites was always (R.I.P.) Nancy Culp--Miss Jane Hathaway!

SnuKnight172 08-01-2007 12:37 PM

Sigma Nu has a Famous Alum named Robin Williams.... The Musician not the Comedian. There are some chatpers out there that are confused about this and have even made the mistake of listing the comedian on their website.

Robin Williams the comedian never even went to a University/College with a Sigma Nu Chapter:

University: Political Science, Claremont Men's College (dropped out)
University: Drama, Marin College
University: Drama, Juilliard School

I stand corrected!:) Good thing he didn't mention the sorority name in the book. Interesting read, though.

i knew there were a lot of famous greeks, but some of the names on here are really surprising. my favorite famous alum is betsy johnson. i just love her style. i wish i was rich so i could buy her clothes.

banditone 08-02-2007 06:57 PM

Sorority Alum HOttie Battle

KD - Ali Landry
KKG - Ashley Judd
Pi Phi - Jennifer Garner

... Just the ones I found with a quick internet search.

KSUViolet06 08-02-2007 07:10 PM

I'm going to go with Miss Carrie Underwood (Alpha Iota). I don't like country music or American Idol, but I admire how she continues to support Sigma despite her fame and obviously busy schedule.

She spoke at Convention this summer and stayed at the hotel until 1:00 AM signing autographs and taking pictures with sisters. She has also been featured in one of our recent Foundation fundraising campaigns.

banditone 08-02-2007 08:11 PM

Niiiiice. I second Mrs. Underwood.
