(these are usually said by about the same, maybe, 3 or 4 people)...take a hint, just throwing it out there.

This is a real easy one to fix.

Stop violating the TOS, use search and obey the law.

This and "retarded" make me cringe. There are so many other words in the English language. If something is stupid, lame, boring, useless, waste of time, etc. then call it stupid, lame, boring, useless, waste of time, etc.

I know I overuse a lot of the words mentioned: "oh my god", "like", "so", "awesome", "freaking", and "whatever". I also overuse "cool", "ok", and "blah blah blah".

Fugly.

I saw that on a billboard for a car near downtown the other day...somebody else must have thought it was tasteless...it was changed the next time I drove by.

AnchorAlumna 06-14-2007 08:59 PM

Nice.
I hate that word. It means nothing.

Just for you DA:

Awesome God (Rich Mullins)
Oh when He rolls up his sleeves He ain't just puttin' on the ritz,
Our God is an awesome God
There is thunder in his footsteps and lightning in his fists
Our God is an awesome God

And the Lord wasn't joking when He kicked 'em out of Eden
It wasn't for no reason that He shed his blood
His return is very soon and so you'd better be believin' that
Our God is an awesome God

Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
with wisdom, pow'r and love
Our God is an awesome God

And when the sky was starless in the void of the night
Our God is an awesome God
He spoke into the darkness and created the light
Our God is an awesome God

And judgment and wrath He poured out on Sodom
Mercy and grace He gave us at the cross
I hope that we have not too quickly forgotten that
Our God is an awesome God

Are you from Mass, NH, or RI? In MA especially, everything is "wicked", but it's usually used to stress something, as in, "it's wicked hot", or "I'm wicked tired".

<---------quilty of occasionally using "wicked"

We used this word in the late 80s in HS. So it's a pretty old phrase.

To add to the list-
"I am so needing..."
"I am liking..."

Just say "I need" or "I like".

Or, from my husband from the south (of which I cured the use of this phrase: "I am fixin to..."

YES! I know it's a "stall word" that people use when thinking what to say, but it's VERY annoying.

SigmaChiCard 06-18-2007 08:00 PM

"the" is way overused and overrated.

UGAalum94 06-18-2007 08:12 PM

I also am troubled by the misuse of "literally," but sometimes it's so wrong it's funny.

I'm also annoyed by the over-application of the words "ironic" and "ironically."

Some things are just odd without actually being ironic. It doesn't really make you seem smarter to use the word "ironic" when you're talking to anyone who knows what irony is and recognizes that you don't.

(It seems to me that arguments break out on Fark.com all the time about the "ironic" tag, so I know I'm not alone.)

As is true for "literally," it can be pathetically entertaining to consider what factors would have to be true to make a given odd situation truly ironic, but it's rarely worth the effort.

Thanks. I've heard the song.

I'll let that go because God could/should be described as "Awesome."

I'm not sure a pair of shoes, or any of the other things some call "Awesome," are.

FYI, in Russian, Ivan the Terrible is actually Ivan the Awesome.

It's one of the few things I remember about Russian class, unless you count "How are you?" "Good, and you?" and for some reason, table & floor.

Table and floor could both be really useful describing what happened (to somebody else, of course) after a night of vodka drinking.

Don't underestimate the power of your knowledge, Honeychile. ;)

Tom Earp 06-19-2007 03:23 PM

Ah.

minDyG 06-23-2007 12:14 AM

I just realized I say "totally" too much. And one of the kids I teach Sunday School (he's 8) called me out for saying that everything was "awesome."

Also...I do say "You should so read this book..." (e.g.); however, it really bothers me when people say "He was so not attractive..." or so not anything else.

Crazy and nice. Those two as well.

Jobellesis 06-26-2007 09:50 AM

Closure.

kathykd2005 06-26-2007 10:06 AM

The word "thing" is overused; I know this because my students can't stop writing it and use specific terminology!

KillarneyRose 06-30-2007 02:05 AM

I detest the term "needless to say" because, if that is the case, why are you saying it?

I also dislike written use of "Um...". I think it should only be used for verbal filler if you can't think of the next word you want to put in your sentence. There's no reason for it to be written since you could just go back and get rid of it once you find the word you want to use.

AlphaFrog 07-09-2007 12:53 PM

I thought of a new one, as I was reading a new author this weekend...

I hate when people use the word "far" to mean "much".

As in "The shoes were far too big on him".

I don't know why, but that just drives me crazy. I guess because I think of "far" as from NY to Cali. Not from a size 8 to a size 12.

It's especially annoying when I'm talking to an ADULT and that moron uses the word "like" at least 15 times in one sentence. I want to strangle them for butchering the English language.

"like" is the worst word ever.

I'm a grammar/spelling nazi myself, but I say "you know" way too often, you know? ;) I also overuse "seriously," "amAzing" (with emphasize on the second a)
My sister always says "that's depressing."
I can't stand people who say supposably, or libary.... and anytime people shorten words to undecipherable piles of letters when typing.

what happened to the words used by Shakespeare and Austen, the ones that give character, depth, and meaning to what we say?
