You are correct. If you have a child (birth or adoption) after receiving a check for 10 months, that child (and future children) will not be added to your case. More babies doesn't equal more money. That's a welfare reform change effective August 22, 1996 (can ya tell I work for social services?).

I hate seeing my clients come in pregnant AGAIN, with baby #3,4,5 or higher. I'm struggling with my one, and have help from her dad. sheesh..

A box of 12 rubbers is $3.75 at wal mart and are free at the health department. sheesh.

FYI doctors will RARELY perform a tubal ligation on a 20-year old unless there is a very strong medical reason.

What would be the strong medical reason - cancer? Multiple sclerosis? Insanity?

I ask because of someone I know who has an 18 year old gorgeous daughter whose parents have been told that she will never been capable of living alone. She will always be either under her parents' or the state's care. She is incapable of saying no - yet to look at her, you'd never know that she was mentally handicapped.

^^^AMEN TO THAT NIKKI!

there is a huge difference between those families on Discovery who have 17 kids, and the one who lives on 100% state support. the biggest difference? it always seems to me that the families on Discovery always planned for 17 kids, i.e Dad has a super paying job, they buy/build a huge house, they are skilled at organizing and budgeting, and they stop when they reach the desired number...

...these girls now? they breathe in too hard and pop out kids. they arent planned for, who has more than 3 kids in a 2 bedroom apartment if they can help it? who wants to go on state assistance if they can help it? it has got to be a miserable feeling...

IMHO, comparing this unmarried, unemployed, incapable of keeping her knees together child to the not the norm, but stable in their own way, Duggars is comparing apples to oranges.

BTW, my gggrandparents had 3 sets of twins, along with 9 other children. Of the ones who lived, all but two went to college, and either law or medical school. Of course, that was 100 years ago, so it was fairly normal then.

I'd have to agree with you, h*c. While I do think the Duggars are a tad...uh..."odd", they seem to know what they are getting themselves into and plan accordingly: buy 2nd hand clothes, they have a family support system in place, etc.

It's like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.

You know, there are other, semi-permanant options, she wouldn't have to get a full tubal. There's Mirena*, which is a plastic IUD about the size of a quarter which is good for 5 years of birth control. There's the implants (not very safe)...and there's the shot...anything...

*Mirena has a website, but when I went to look it up, the stupid "Sonic Wall" my boss put on said "Forbidden Website: Sex Education":rolleyes:

the Duggars are an example of how to do it right. true, they are a bit different from most families, but you never get the idea that any of those children are neglected in any way. they look clean, fed, and happy, and to me that is what matters the most. oh, and their good behavior doesnt hurt either!

imo, it is irresponsible to bring children into the world and not be able to take care of the ones you already have. i understand that condoms break, the pill isnt 100%, but you have to at least TRY SOMETHING to stop it from happening again!

Or, if you are having a child you cannot care for, consider adoption. I have far too many friends who would make wonderful mothers who are infertile.

OneTimeSBX 06-15-2007 10:17 AM

^^very true. its sad how those who want it the most suffer the most. there's no need for any child to suffer, someone somewhere will take it. even the ones with problems. i saw a show about a family that had adopted around 14 kids and all of them were special needs children. those children were the happiest ones i think i ever saw...

As an adoptive mom to a beautiful 4-year old son, I heartily agree with you!

Personal responsibility does not mean that you take freedom away from people. It's only personal responsibility if someone is actively taking responsibility for their actions. Not if someone else/the State takes it.

Eeew, this woman is a big ol' parasite.
