Virus Spread by Oral Sex Is Linked to Throat Cancer

By Rob Stein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 10, 2007; Page A13

The sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer also sharply increases the risk of certain types of throat cancer among people infected through oral sex, according to a study being published today.

(I don't know if anyone had linked this yet... I totally thought this article was fake until I googled it!)

Drolefille 06-09-2007 04:38 PM

I have access to the abstract of the study (as well as the full article actually) would posting an abstract be w/in fair use or should I just post a citation for anyone who actually feels like reading the study.

Yeah, post the abstract with the full reference. I didn't say inconceivable, I said highly unlikely... It doesn't mean never, it means every now and then...

It also sounds like the virus mutated again as people got "creative"... ;)

These people are not sexually promiscious and were in long term relationships, and their s.o. cheated or other similar situations.

My point is, you're taking an article as truth that isn't true (I myself did think that this could be true, but have since decided otherwise) and using it to go on your tirade. People are not always truthful, maybe in your perfect world, with your perfect girl, people don't cheat, no one has an STD and everything is great. However, that is not real life. Don't shove your ideals on other people and judge them for doing otherwise

I wasn't going on a tirade. I do have my own opinions and I am entitled to them as you are to yours. I'm not knocking the innocent people such as your friends who have caught STDs, but I am against the people who do cheat and sleep with everyone they meet. No, I don't live in a perfect world and I don't have a perfect girl, but one thing I can tell you is I don't sleep with every girl I date or start a relationship with. Time always tells how a person will be, because they can't hide behind the representative forever. So in turn I wait. There's more to a relationship than just sex. FWB (friends with benefits) there's too much of this crap going on today. How can a joker be friends with someone that he/she is screwing? That is so stupid to me. There has to be some kind of feelings there. If you're not going to get seriously involved with this person then don't be intimate with him/her. That just causes problems and on top of it, STDs. I don't have any remorse for people who catch STDs that have slept with every one they date. I always say they should have thought about that before the draws dropped.

I doubt it's a seperate mutation of HPV it appears that it's the same strains that cause cervical cancer. It's probably a quality of the virus and the infection that causes the cells in either mouth or cervix to mutate. The same strains can cause penile cancer as well which only supports that. (I'm not a virologist but if the same strain is doing this to multiple targets, I say it's the strain not the target)

ABSTRACT

Background Substantial molecular evidence suggests a role for human papillomavirus (HPV) in the pathogenesis of oropharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma, but epidemiologic data have been inconsistent.

Methods We performed a hospital-based, case–control study of 100 patients with newly diagnosed oropharyngeal cancer and 200 control patients without cancer to evaluate associations between HPV infection and oropharyngeal cancer. Multivariate logistic-regression models were used for case–control comparisons.

Results A high lifetime number of vaginal-sex partners (26 or more) was associated with oropharyngeal cancer (odds ratio, 3.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.5 to 6.5), as was a high lifetime number of oral-sex partners (6 or more) (odds ratio, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.3 to 8.8). The degree of association increased with the number of vaginal-sex and oral-sex partners (P values for trend, 0.002 and 0.009, respectively). Oropharyngeal cancer was significantly associated with oral HPV type 16 (HPV-16) infection (odds ratio, 14.6; 95% CI, 6.3 to 36.6), oral infection with any of 37 types of HPV (odds ratio, 12.3; 95% CI, 5.4 to 26.4), and seropositivity for the HPV-16 L1 capsid protein (odds ratio, 32.2; 95% CI, 14.6 to 71.3). HPV-16 DNA was detected in 72% (95% CI, 62 to 81) of 100 paraffin-embedded tumor specimens, and 64% of patients with cancer were seropositive for the HPV-16 oncoprotein E6, E7, or both. HPV-16 L1 seropositivity was highly associated with oropharyngeal cancer among subjects with a history of heavy tobacco and alcohol use (odds ratio, 19.4; 95% CI, 3.3 to 113.9) and among those without such a history (odds ratio, 33.6; 95% CI, 13.3 to 84.8). The association was similarly increased among subjects with oral HPV-16 infection, regardless of their tobacco and alcohol use. By contrast, tobacco and alcohol use increased the association with oropharyngeal cancer primarily among subjects without exposure to HPV-16.

Conclusions Oral HPV infection is strongly associated with oropharyngeal cancer among subjects with or without the established risk factors of tobacco and alcohol use.

FWB... Do you FCUK your Friends... Are you that hard up?

Well, can't a woman just sexually express herself? Who cares if she sleeps around?

I think the issue we are discuss runs deep. We lack love, generally. Namely, love for ourselves. I see that many kids lack the fundamental concept that when one connects sexually to a vile person, it predisposes them to contracting many a thing, first unwanted pregnancy. Aren't there enough kids thought to be unwanted in this world? Second thing is STI's from garden variety that are treatable to the untreatable or unknown it was an STI.

The more unprotected sexual expression occurs, the more at risk one puts oneself...

So, how does one break this cycle? Why do you think I talk about the "Tantra" and the "Kama Sutra". There is another old practice done in the Carribean that is reminscent of Afrikan Centeredness... I hate to make this a Christianity vs. "insert Spirituality here", but, the "Good Book" lacks teaching about the realness of sexual ectasy.

Now, to reroute thinking, sex did not evolved to be thinking activity. But it did evolved to be a "Spiritual" activity. The highest peak of senusualness. Just because one touches sensually, does not mean intercourse must take place, one can practice. But, the first part is love of God, others and oneself. Not to pinnacle arrogance, but self-care love to love another...

First, thanks for that. I will check out the full article when I gain NEJM access.

Well, this is a 100 person study. It is not enough for clinical trials. And it is suspected that the L1 capsid mutated is tertiary or quartenary structure enough to be shifted to convert to seropositivity. There could be another differential. Also, many folks with this situation, there is another issue and many young people abuse newer illicit drugs that orally taken does cause all kinds of health issues. Crystal meth is rife with mutation effects.

But if is throat cancer by oral sex on HPV+ individuals, then, well, there has to be changes to the medical literature--as you are well aware of... :)

No, I don't have sex with my friends. Yes, a woman can sexually express herself, but does she have to do it with multiple partners? Does she have to do it with her friends? Why can't it be done with one person and one person only? Somone that she loves and cares about.

Okay, if she can sexually express herself, she can have any kind of partner she desires even if it is her friend.

Personally, I would not do that, but there are women who just think differently. And to talking to women that do, I know they psychologically hurt and feel that they can find love externally.

It can be done with one person within the bounds of a known commitment (verbal or legal).

Also, NO ONE can love or care about anyone unless he or she loves and cares about his or herself. Period. That is the prerequisite for a relationship. You cannot have that, unless you love yourself. And just because you love yourself sufficiently does not mean your mate to be is ready...

If she wants to do the FWB thing, then she can go right ahead and risk getting an STD. Hey, it's the in thing for 07', 08', 09' ect. ect.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. You have to love yourself before you can love someone else. I was in a bad relationship like that.

Personally, IMO, FWB for women is a sexual and psychological vampirism. What happens when a woman falls for the FWB that she is fooling around with?

And if this is what the young folks like to do in the 200- whatever, then all the research and programs dedicated to eliminating illnesses seem to not work...

That's my whole point. I can't see how two people can screw as friends and nothing else without someone wanting more. I don't think people are created that way. Most animals have sex without any ties. People that do this, I would have to put them in the animal category. That's a silly comment but I don't know what else to call it. To me it's just stupid to screw and that's it. Me personally, I have to have something there. I have to be connected to her mentally during and after the physical part. I can't just have sex and get up and say thanks and leave, only to come back for seconds when I'm aroused.

Well, I would be the wrong person who says anything regarding this. But I do know most women that "go for it"--not all--have suffered sexual violence, such as child sex abuse, rape and other things. That doesn't absolve them, but, it is the underlying reason why some women allow themselves to be prostituted like that.

Animals do not "screw" randomly, they usually are in heat and they usually do it because reproduction. It is thought that only the human animal has sex for other reasons than procreation.

Most women lie to themselves when they say no connection to their sexual partner. Most women need that connection in order to function sanely.

Right. Most animals mate during mating season. When people have sex with nothing there, it looks the same way to me. I know people mate for pleasure, but to me, to do it and just get up and leave is just as trifling as a dog mating with another dog and then leaving and looking for another one to mate with. That's the way it is. These same people then wonder how they got an STD. The part that makes me mad is when they give it to someone who wants more than just the sex.

So, it is my understanding regarding animals that lack "fidelity" and have sex with any and everything, like Chimps and Dogs, have sex that way because they are trying to ensure to promotion of their genes. The males want to make sure their genes are transmitted. As far as the females go, it is a non issue to them. They have an estrus cycle without a sense of "morality".

However, there are animals that "mate for life". Like a shrew and a sea bird. These animals, if you put them with other mates, will NEVER mate. Occassionaly, the mice will do the same thing every now and then. Never mate with a different one.

But as far as STD's. Well, Chimps are the major vector for the first strain of HIV-1 that then mutated to HIV-2 and possibly HIV-3.

But, I don't think most people absolutely WANT to transmit their STI to others, most people don't know they have a STI until it is actually something like HIV infection and they come down with something huge.

Dolphins stay with only one too, and they actually mate for pleasure like humans. I'll lay off the animal thing. Other members are going to see this and then this thread is going to turn into a train wreck.

What I'm getting at is this. For example when I was in undergrad, if I went out with a woman my brothers would say "Did you bone her?" Or I would hear guys talk about how many women they screwed. Comments like, "Oh yeah, I boned her. Man if you can stay in that longer than 15 minutes, then I'll give you a trophy. She's got some good @@#$." Then laugh about it. Why is that funny and cool? People are just scared to get in a serious relationship. When I date, I date to see if this is a woman that I can court long term. Hopefully to see if it's someone I can see spending a lifetime with through marriage. If she's not that kind of a girl, I'm not just going to screw her and be out. I'll move on to the next woman.

For the jokers who don't know they have an STD, obviously they either have been with multiple partners, or have slept with a trifling joker that gave it to them. Either way, the draws were probably dropped too early.

Yeah, there are some GC'ers are into Beastiality. I am not one of them.

I understand what you are saying about your boys. But, it has been that way for a long time. That does not make it right and maybe one day it will change, but for now, that is some peoples mentality. It is an indication that inside them, something internally, is desparately wrong with them.

Which should suggest that one who wants to take it slow to develop a relationship should first be friends before dating takes place.

My question if you want a situation like that, what do you do when the "carnal fires of passions" rumble? How do you know how to stop it?

I don't think anything will change. Things are only going to get worse. Yup, I think it's very important to start off as friends 1st then take things slowly into something more serious. Of course the fire is going to try and go out, but that's why it's important to keep the relationship fresh and new. I think when a couple continues to date, it has a tendency to keep things fresh. Pack a lunch for your mate, and stick a love letter in there. Send roses to her job just because. Continue to give her the attention she needs. Ect. ect.

Ect. ect.

Why are all Kappa's like that? Spoken like the true Kappa gentleman you are... ;) :p

Most fellas are not like that. Hayle, my husband barely thinks on that level with out hints. Of course he is not Greek... Maybe the Kappas I do know can give him some pointers...

This conversation has nothing to do with oral sex, STI's and throat cancer. But it has been real.
