I like the whole Christmas Island CD by Jimmy Buffett.

Also, "Carol of the Bells", "Adeste Fideles", "Silent Night" and "Away in a Manger" are some of my traditional favorites.

my fav. is 'o holy night'

Senusret I 11-25-2003 06:16 PM

"O Holy Night" Reason: On the episode of "My So-Called Life" Ricky (i think that was his name) had been put out of his home because he was gay (i think) and he was pretty much homeless. Then Claire Danes' family rescued him. Or maybe the teacher rescued him. Anyway, somebody rescued him, and basically there was no dialogue, but "O Holy Night" was being sung my this choir. I think I cried on "fall on your knees."

"Mary's Boy Child" Reason: We sang this for the Christmas program in Junior High School.

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" Reason: I really don't know why, but for some reason I can play it on piano.

"Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth" by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. Reason: It's David freakin' Bowie!

CatStarESP4 11-26-2003 02:21 AM

O Holy Night (I also like the South Park treatment of the song)

YES! I love it!!!
My favorites are Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer and Dominic the Donkey. See this is what happens when you're Jewish. Of the actual Christmas songs, I like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" and Hark How the Bells. I had to sing it with my middle school chorus. It's a beautiful song.

norcalchick 10-31-2004 04:38 PM

N'sync's Christmas song

I'm a huge fan of Mannheim Steamroller's "Stille Nacht", "Carol of the Bells", and "Traditions of Christmas". I love anything by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, too, especially "Old City Bar." I'm going to see them on Nov. 20th in Greensboro. I'm so excited :) I like any version of "O Holy Night" too.

And I also love "Baby, It's Cold Outside". I think it's the version by Bing Crosby and Doris Day.

Taualumna 11-02-2004 12:49 PM

I like:

1. Christmas Lullaby (the one that goes "Lullaby, Lullaby, Lulla-lulla-lullaby (3x) and then "Sleep Baby Jesus, do not cry for fear...."). We sang it in school as part of our Nativity performance.

2. The Virgin's Slumber Song ("Amid the roses Mary sits and rocks her Jesus Child......") This was performed by the Folk Group, a select few members of the Senior Choir at my high school.

3. I'll Be Home For Christmas

4. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

5. Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire

6. Jingle Bell Rock

7. White Christmas

8. Silent Night

9. Away In A Manger

10. O Come All Ye Faithful

11. The First Noel

12. What Child Is This?

kappaloo 11-02-2004 12:57 PM

1. Hark the Herald Angels sing
2. Oh Come all Ye Faithful
3. Christmas Lullaby (Though, I forget the name I usually refer to it as)

Is it the same one I posted? If so, then yes, it's called "Christmas Lullaby".

Yes, but it does have another name.... *goes to look it up* The Coventry Carol. That's what I've always seen it named as. And instead of saying "Lullaby" you say "lulllay"

edit: It's a different song. I'm a doofus.

Oooo....I know "The Coventry Carol", but that's not what I was thinking of......the one I posted has the lines "Sleep Baby Jesus, do not cry for fear/I will protect You, I am ever near." It think it was written by a Canadian woman.

O Holy Night and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

BetteDavisEyes 11-02-2004 06:18 PM

O HOLY NIGHT!

Best Christmas song ever! Really amazing when sung by a childrens choir.

carnation 12-01-2004 11:51 PM

There's one I really like but I don't know who sings it. I first heard it last year--it's "Do you Hear What I Hear" with both a country and a Middle Eastern flavor. (If that makes any sense.) My daughter thinks a Christian singer sings it.

Could it be the BE Taylor version? It's awesome!

I like the more unusual Christmas songs, like The Holly and the Ivy; Down in Yon Forest, This World, Gloria (in excelcis deo), O Holy Night, etc.

carnation 12-02-2004 07:44 AM

I'm going to check, honeychile! I've spent a lot of commuting time desperately listening for the name of the artist!

You might like Carol of the Birds if you like unusual carols. Mannheim Steamroller has a hauntingly beautiful version but here's one on piano:

MysticCat 12-02-2004 12:14 PM

Call me Scrooge or call me a snob, but I tend to dislike just about any "popular" Christmas music, by which I mean anything you would hear on a pop/Top 40 radio station, including pop covers of traditional carols.

But it just ain't Christmas without Robert Earl Keen's "Merry Christmas from the Family." That's a must sing-along song.

ShyViolet 12-02-2004 01:02 PM

My favorite traditional Christmas carol is hands down, Silent Night sung by Bing Crosby. Makes me think of my parents listening to it when I was little, with a fire in the fireplace and eating warm gingerbread cookies. mmm, tasty. :)
But I must say that I like new remakes of Christmas carols, I think they can be fun. My favourite (probably cause I just saw them in concert ;) ) is Barenaked Ladies mix of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings. It's got a swing beat and Sarah McLachlan guests (pity she wasn't at the concert).
