WOW. I'm picturing the same person showing up at different polling places voting under different names.

I vote absentee and mailing the ballot in is wayyyy more convenient, IMO. But here all voters show a picture ID to the person behind the desk, who locates your name in the register book with all the names from the precinct printed. She writes your ballot number next your name, and then you sign.

I forgot to mention that they match the signatures after you sign your name in the registration book.

I think that it might be possible for one person to vote more than once, but I haven't heard of that happening.

Do most states require bringing the voter registration card? Here in Hawaii we just have to show valid Government picture ID.

I didn't have to show any ID or voter registration card when I voted during lunch today either. I just had to fill out the form, which they checked with my name and received my ballot. I think when I lived in Iowa, I had to provide something. I think the showing of ID varies from state to state and has been a growing controversy in some states where some people might not have a photo ID.

I figure I'll go tomorrow when the lines are shorter. haha. Actually I voted this morning.

Joke: Why are politicians like diapers?

Punch line: They need to be changed often - and for the same reason.

cutie_cat_4ever 11-07-2006 08:39 PM

I voted today :D and they checked my ID to see if my address matches

I voted at 7:20 AM and was number 36. I did not have to show any kind of ID nor did I received a sticker.

IIRC from Middle School (?), there is a law that states that one is allowed 30 minutes for voting.

I voted no on all 3, too. I've heard all kinds of horror stories about the phone calls telling people they'll be charged to vote and precints running out of ballots. My new polling place only had 1 electronic machine. My old precint had all electronic.

You can track election results here: http://www.yahoo.com/s/432370

It's a pop up window, but I thought it was cool to see how the country was voting! I got in to vote just minutes before the polls closed. Whew!
...Okay, or it's not a pop up window apparently, but just a page...

aephi alum 11-07-2006 10:30 PM

In Connecticut, you have to show ID to vote. Most people use their driver's licenses. Most people have driver's licenses, as you pretty much need a car to get anywhere around here. People who don't drive usually have non-driver ID cards if they don't have passports.

The poll workers got very confused with my ID, because I moved within CT last year, and when you move within the state, the DMV just gives you a sticker to put on the back of your license - so the front of my license still shows my old address. But I explained it to them, and I was allowed to vote.

I didn't get a sticker either. :( I wound up voting after work, so I guess they ran out of stickers.

cnn.com has pretty good election coverage. There's a form where you can enter your zip code and it will list your district's results for Congress, Senate (if applicable), and governor (if applicable).

Lieberman is being projected as the winner of the CT Senate race. Lamont's still very close, though... I guess they're using mainly exit poll data. I hope we don't have to deal with a recount.

Polls close in about 1 hour.

I just got home from sign waving and I am sunburned.

Soon I'll be off to Senator Akaka's HQ then to my HS classmate's party...she's running a tight State House race and if she wins, she'll be the youngest ever in office.

It's gonna be a long night.

kddani 11-07-2006 11:17 PM

buh bye Santorum... thank god.

In PA you only have to show ID if you're voting in a precinct for the first time (i.e. after you move).

My precinct had 9 lovely new voting machines. However, there were only 2 or 3 being used at any given time because the people explaining them were soooo slow. The lady giving me the directions (though they're right there on the screen) kept on forgetting what she was saying b/c she was looking trying to see who the guy next to me was voting for. Lovely. Thanks, lady, I had to wait in line for 20-25 minutes because you're so busy being a nebshit.

Looks like Michigan is keeping it's Governor and US Senator. And, the state has voted to ban affirmative action, to ban the hunting of mourning doves...

amanda6035 11-07-2006 11:40 PM

God, I love living in a red state =)

AlexMack 11-07-2006 11:41 PM

^^^I'm so glad I live in a blue state where Democrats just swept the entire board.

Woohoo! Deval Patrick was elected governor of Massachusetts, kicking Kerry Healey's ass! Numbers are preliminary but she's already given her concession speech.

You can take your voter's registration card OR your driver's license...but you have to show your legal name (no Mindy Smith if your name is Melinda Smith) and it has to have the right address. My husband almost didn't get to vote b/c we moved and he didn't update the address on his voter's registration, but did on his license...and then he couldn't find his card. But, since we moved w/in 30 days, he was able to show up to the polling place and explain the situation.

Mark Sanford is close friends w/ my atty at work. He called our office yesterday afternoon to verify he'd be in town to vote and to see if my atty wanted to go vote w/ him this morning. I was teasing him all day after seeing this on CNN.

After watching that CNN video, I can't help but feel sorry for him and that precinct official who turned him away.

I mean, I know rules are rules and such, but hi? The Governor? You know how he looks like and the official still turned him away?

LOL at the First Lady saying she "said she reminded him to bring the registration card"...

AUDeltaGam 11-08-2006 07:36 AM

While the person I wanted to win for senator didn't (which is a shame, because he would have been wonderful), at least our Democratic governor won another term. So atleast there's some BLUE here!

And in GA, where I am still a resident and vote by absentee, once again, my vote didn't make a difference :( But I still voted!

The1calledTKE 11-08-2006 07:47 AM

Even though Georgia re-elected Sonny I am glad overall with the Democrats gains across the country.

Yeah, the Boston Globe can't help falling over itself in excitement of a Dem. governor and legislature. After reading this morning's edition, I don't know how ANYONE can defend the impartiality of that paper.

That said, Patrick ran a solid campaign, and he was really the only one who did so. Kerry Healey is extremely smart, but she just didn't run a good campaign.

Same here. And Sonny really isn't all that bad - he's former Dem after all.

deadbear80 11-08-2006 09:46 AM

For once in my life, I'm happy I live in a State where my vote makes a difference :).
I grew up in IL and am a Democrat--so it's not like I was really ever needed to vote there. 1st time I lived in MO was the 1st time I was allowed to vote for President--and I voted absentee in IL. That was dumb. Moved to MA and voted there (again, being a Dem didn't matter much--although I DID vote for Shannon O'Brien over Mitt Romney--not like that ended up helping). Moved back to MO and registered to vote here--and thankfully finally made a difference :). JIM (no)TALENT SUCKS--I'm happy he didn't get elected. Claire McCaskill isn't my favorite person--but she's a helluva lot better than (no)Talent. I'm also happy that the Stem Cell Research Amendment has seemed to pass (take that Rush Limbaugh!).

I'm moving again at the end of the year--most likely to a Blue State (not that I'm doing that purposely--I'm moving anyway but my choices are decidedly to 'Blue' places), but I'm happy that I got to see effective change in Missouri.

Voting was easy here--I chose computer over paper ballot--but both were A LOT nicer than the old butterfly ballots we had. There were no stickers--we were told the Election Commission didn't want to spend the money for them this year :(

What I don't understand about this state is why do people think it's so bad to be able to sell wine in all grocery stores? Luckily, my grocery store is one of the 3 allowed in a chain to sell liquor.

I would like to be happy with the election results in my home state but we did some pretty stupid things yesterday. :(

AOIIBrandi 11-08-2006 10:24 AM

I voted yesterday, but none of it really counted since I voted mostly libertarian - because I would like to see a viable 3 party system here, and because I didn't care for anyone running in the normal parties.

Drolefille 11-08-2006 10:43 AM

That's what I did by voting Green in Illinois. And besides getting 10% of the vote, the Green Party is now a major party. I'm a big fan of multi-party politics and I hate how it's been engineered by the two parties in power to stay a two party system

I was really surprise with the Green party turn out. 49% to Blagojevich, 40% to Topinka and 10% to Whitney. That's a greater turn out than at least from what I've seen in the past (mostly in the 5% range). I could definitely see the Green party rising.

Boston Globe is a paper in a super liberal blue state. I never had any delusions of its impartiality. It's like Fox News, only liberal!

I really don't get the wine thing either. We can make gay marriage legal, but wine in supermarkets? Think of the children!

Sister Havana 11-08-2006 11:47 AM

I think a lot of people were not happy with the choice between Blagojevich and Topinka. I also think Topinka's choice of running mate really hurt her - I know a lot of people (especially women) who would have had no problem voting for her, but could not stand Birkett and didn't want him anywhere near the governor's mansion. (he is dreadful!)

That said, it is a beautiful day to be a Democrat. :)

Cosign! I toyed with the idea of the voting for Whitney, but in the end, I held my nose and voted for Blago. Can't stand Birkett, so Topinka wasn't really an option.

I'm watching the Cook County Board election pretty closely, though. Anyone else smell a recount coming?

Seriously co-sign. I am SO glad I don't have to see her whiny commercials anymore. I can't decide if she's manly or just horsey?

That is the best thing about the day after election day. No more damn commercials. No more Lynn Swann talking but not really saying a damn thing. No more of Rick Santorum pimping out his family.

Speaking of Rick- did you see the pictures of his family last night? His kids were dressed like they were Amish. Really, you can be super-Catholics and still dress with some amount of self respect and style. God won't look down upon you for being at least slightly stylish.

I saw them this morning. I wasn't sure if it was the li'l Ricks & Rickettes (ha ha, rickets) or a polygamy special on A & E. At least the hardcore Amish rock the basic black & white.

We'd better be careful, or we'll have to apologize like Tony Norman. What a wuss.

Oh definitely, I never had delusions either, it's just that the levels of impartiality surprise me sometimes. Seven years living in Boston dulled me to it a bit though when I was reading it every day. Between the Globe and the Herald, there's no middle ground.

The wine and beer thing was annoying; now that I'm out of the state, it's nice to be able to stop by the grocery store to pick up a 6 pack or whatever. Who knows though, they did take away the ban on Sundays.

Also, Heath Shuler won - hopefully he ends up as a better Congressman than NFL QB:

Drolefille 11-08-2006 02:44 PM

BTW, looks like they're calling Montana for the Democrats leaving only Virginia to go (and there'll almost certainly be a recount there as the margin is small enough that the state will do it for free at the loser's request.)

/Not sure if everyone's calling it or not but there's about a 4,000 vote difference with 99% reporting.
