I am still debating if I would like to get that ring holder for my badge to wear once and a while...

Wow - I wish we could do that! If we could, I'd get a lot more wear out of my pin! I would so rather see a pin on a lapel than in a drawer.

I have a few pins I've rescued from ebay, and I have one on a pendant - there are always lots of comments when I wear it. Another pin, I plan to have made into a ring. It's one of the plainest version of our diamond; the ones with a lot of pearls or other stones would destroy any hose or other similar fabric.

33girl 10-12-2006 09:57 AM

ASA alums can wear the badge as a ring or pendant - I don't think we have the circle thingy for the pendant though.

OMG the lapel debate again!! Our chapter was always told to never ever ever wear the badge on a lapel, then I go to convention and see our national ritual chair with her pin on her lapel. I never thought of it being a collegian/alum thing - I thought it was that if you are going to keep the jacket on, you can wear it on your lapel. I still don't think I ever could though, too many years of "THOU SHALT NOT" behind me. ;)

I saw it awhile ago on BurrPatt's website, but it's since disappeared. It might have been something that they took upon themselves to do, and then National saw it and said nuh-uh.

From the HJGreek website for ASA:

Not a badge, but it's so gorgeous that it deserves to get posted:

I think that thing is a few thousand $$ when made in genuine diamonds, right?? I know I remember looking and it and drooling.

tunatartare 10-12-2006 10:48 AM

$477.50. Without the chain.

AlphaFrog 10-12-2006 11:11 AM

Still not in my budget.

33girl 10-12-2006 11:15 AM

A good bud of mine won the one that was raffled off at convention. I have a pic of it resting in her cleavage. :p

Greek culture at the time when I was in school was the boyfriend would give his badge or give the girlfriend a "sweetheart's" version of the badge for her to wear.

I know that the significance of this is also similar when men will give women their letters on a pendant...again it boils down to campus Greek culture.

Mine is still attached to my husband's fraternity pin. He had a chapter guard on his pin before he gave it to me, but it wasn't common in our chapter to wear a guard. I think the president had a guard with a gavel, but that was it (but my memory isn't as good as it used to be either!) I don't remember dangles at all.

I don't remember if AOPi's had their badges attached to their sweetie's pin or not....but that was the custom at our campus. You went downtown to the jeweler the day after the pinning and he soldered them together on a chain. Pinnings were a big deal--most did candle passing, we passed candy and only did candle passing for engagements. Then everyone went to a certain bar after chapter.

I suppose I should have them separated in case he ever wants to wear it again. On NPC Badge day last year, I wore both of them.

honeychile 10-12-2006 12:51 PM

My "ADPi partner in crime" was able to pick this up at Convention for $500, but it's now $905.00.

She loves it when I wear my pin pendant when she wears the diamond necklace - I think she realizes that I'll never be able to afford her necklace unless I find a sugar daddy!

KSUViolet06 10-12-2006 02:40 PM

We can't wear out badge as a necklace, ring, or other piece of jewelry. But there is this necklace which is the outline of our badge:

ShyViolet 10-12-2006 04:29 PM

^ I love that pendant! I've been wanting it for Christmas for ages, but have never asked my mum for it in time. Oh well, if I didn't want an ipod this year I'd ask for it now. lol :D

I have a chapter guard, again to keep me from losing my badge (as happened to a chapter sister of mine - she was really upset about it), and I have my Circle Degree dangle hanging from it. I did have dangles on my badge as a collegian, but only for the offices/chairs I held at that time, never for previous ones. It kept it relatively uncluttered. Now I have them all on a charm bracelet which has little hearts in between the links.

Cheers,
ShyViolet

Wincing, having to correct one of my one dear sisters:
Actually, we can where our badges on at least a neckalce...most of the uh, more senior, members of my alum chapter (lots of Golden Violets) got together and ordered the "disk" thingies from EO for their badges...but they had to be specially made since their badges where all an older model that didn't fit whatever size is currently in stock!

Drolefille 10-12-2006 04:39 PM

You almost always have to send your badge in to get a pendant holder or ring made for it. At least that's how HJ's system works.

Mine is set in a circle pendant, and it includes my chapter guard and dangles as well. I also have a sister in my alum chapter that had her Badge set in a ring.

I am jealous of Greeklawgirl's pendant badge it's super pretty. :)

You may have a similar code to us:

Actives can not wear the badge as any other jewlery but once you are an Alumnae you can wear it as a necklace or ring.

aephi alum 10-12-2006 04:52 PM

I envy those of you who can wear your badges as rings or pendants. We are never allowed to turn our badges or NM pins into any other form of jewelry. It's a shame... I still have my NM pin and would love to wear it as a pendant. :(

Drolefille 10-12-2006 04:57 PM

I want a new member pin :( Ours are super cute.

kathykd2005 10-12-2006 05:15 PM

Speaking of new member pins. . . I remember I lost my first degree pin and cried for hours. The sisters assured me it was no big deal, but I still remember how upset I was. I guess that was just me--I also got hysterical at pref party. :p

hehe, there's a designated crier in every group...keeps things interesting ;).

The funniest thing about it was that I wasn't even the most emotional--we had another girl who always cried at everything, and they even did a parody song about her called "No Kami No Cry." :)

I just love those diamond outlines of certain badge shapes! OMG!!

Mr. BSB just returned from one of his travels with a very pretty circle necklace with diamonds around the circle (Anniversary gift). I will pretend that is my "AGD necklace" since we have circles in our crest :)!

That's the closest most members will get to the diamonds -- Crown Pearl with Diamond Points.

The all-diamond Badge can only be worn by the International President.

I wish this badge option was available when I was an undergrad.

I also love the Plain badge with one tiffany diamond.

For other NPC GLOs, I think the Tri-Delt badge with the trident guard is so sharp looking, the Gamma Phi Badge is very pretty and the Pi-Phis and Kappas when they wear multiple keys or arrows looks very neat too. I just love to look at all the badges and jewelry for all the orgs...

Me too. :( I should have just not given it back. haha.

honeychile 10-12-2006 09:26 PM

We're not permitted to keep our Alpha pins, but our Alumnae Association at the time I was initiated bought all of ours, and put them on pretty little frames as an initiation gift. It was really cute, and the next Alpha class got brand new pins!

I can remember thinking, "I wonder who wore this before I got it?" - a very cool feeling!

Drolefille 10-12-2006 09:52 PM

This is the SK badge on pendant

http://www.hjgreek.com/assets/images...large/9356.jpg

And the TriDelta badge on pendant
http://www.hjgreek.com/assets/images...large/9413.jpg

And the TriDelta pendant with shinies
http://www.hjgreek.com/assets/images...large/9366.jpg

Does anyone recall who makes the diamond Triangle for Sigma Kappa. Looks a lot like the above except solid, not outlined. I didn't see it at HJGreek.com

Oh and I found the Tri Delta ring, but it doesn't show it with the badge

I love the badge on a ring. Except I already have mine soderd(so off on the spelling, but anyway) to my Trident. I keep trying to bid on another badge on ebay, so that I can have that one made into a ring (and still keep it within the Fraternity) but it keeps going out of my price range.

I LOVE the Delta Diamond, but doubt I'll be getting that anytime soon either.

PhoenixAzul 10-12-2006 10:15 PM

Ye know, I guess I have a very poor idea of how large these badges really are! I guess it is because I've only ever seen an Alpha Xi quill and a Phi Tau badge in person and they were of a fair size (both antique). But I'm shocked by the "scale" of them when sellers compare them to pennies on e-bay...I don't know why I was envisioning them being quite a bit larger.

It is hard to judge the size of the badges in pictures...they generally are smaller than people think they would be. I know the DG badge is the same height as a dime (I just measured it;) ):)

Yeah...they're tiny! My lyre badge is about the size of my thumbnail, and my chapter guard is about the size of a quarter of my pinky nail (yes, I'm looking at it now :D ) The letters on my badge are like, one millimeter tall.

How big is your badge?

But, no matter the GLO, they really stand out! :)

My badge is about the size of my thumb nail too, safe to say.

I've only ever seen pictures of our "real" badge, although I connected with a '72 alum who has a pearl circle badge that I hope she'll show to me. Our badges and the tradition of badges has been sadly lost at Otterbein. Our current badges are probably about the size of a quarter, maybe smaller, just Tau Delta written in script and underlined by a rose.

Your badge sounds very pretty and unique. :)

Has your sorority ever thought about trying to bring the pearl circle badge back, or at least incorporating part of it into the current design?

Yep, that's sort of been my pet project for the last few years. The one group that's maintained their badges/badge tradition, is having a bit of a time having theirs re-struck. They have x amount of badges, which get past from big-little, but some have been lost/damaged/not given. They'd like for everyone to have one, so they've got to hunt down someone who is willing to make a small strike of them (less than 500).

I keep trolling E-bay in the off chance that one might pop up. I accidentally found a very beautiful pin of another Otterbein sorority, bid on it, and lost :(. I was so excited because I knew the girls would have been super happy to have it back, but alas. I'm hoping that after 85 years, someone, somewhere, has their badge still tucked away.

Drolefille 10-13-2006 09:07 AM

I'd say the SK badge is about the size of a guy's thumbnail. I'd have to compare it though. I think it's too wide at the bottom for mine.

Did you check in Pittsburgh? I think there are specialty jewelers in the Clark Building who might do stuff like that.

ISUKappa 10-13-2006 10:31 AM

The Kappa badge is 1" in length (that's specified in our bylaws) and about 3/8" wide. My husband's ATO badge is 1/2" square. In fact, I'm wearing my two Kappa badges and an ATO badge right now because I have to help out with initiation and won't have time to go home and change. :)

9/16" tall and 5/8" wide...I wasn't sure either but I was positive some of the sellers on eBay would've measured it.
