I will not say much until everything is officially announced.

I agree. Nothing personal Taualumna but I wouldnt buy it/read it. I wouldnt read it not because I think it isnt a good idea for a book, but I just dont see how it would make for an exciting plot. I'm sure your experience was exciting to you, but for me, I dont really consider the AI stories here that appealing to read much less reading about one in a book. I dont mean to offend. |
VERY funny thread.

Pledged came out - how many years ago? - and I JUST read it this summer. I was able to get a used copy; I wouldn't want the author to earn any money from me.
It was one of the worst books I ever read. Not just because of the sorority stuff in it, but those most of those stories were SO SILLY and sound so fabricated. So...no, I would not be interested in a book about AI. |
I seriously hope you consider a revision or three before you submit to a publisher. I can see AI as a possible subplot, but not your main plot. And to call your plot "chicklit silliness" demeans the genre. Sure, it can be a light, frothy comedy or heavy drama, but I used to think the same thing about romance novels before I started writing them...and realized how much WORK it is to write one.
That said, I wish you well with your submission. |

Is this a thinly disguised autobiography? I've heard a theory that the first novel of most authors is really a crappy autobiography -- maybe you'd be well-served to ditch it and start fresh with a new idea.

Hm, could be very interesting. Not kidding either. AI is a same post in Greek Lfe even though some make a big point out of it!:( If I buy it, can you sign it for Me? Think I am kidding? Not at all! I will do what I can to help Your career no matter what.:D So, is yours so different than another book being touted on GC? If it is written and some are looking on it to publish, just do it! Period.:D This is your decission and none of the people on GC to try to change your mind! If you need, PM me when it comes out and ship Me a copy and I will pay for it! Just sign it!:) |
My first novel was pretty awful, too. I think to myself often, "I wrote this c**p?"
|
Honestly? I just can't see it as interesting as a book about joining a sorority in your college years. That, in and of itself, is a driven plot. It's been proven already.
I'm trying hard to see myself reading a book that involves AI, but I just can't see myself getting sucked in. And trust me, I read total shit, not that I'm saying your book is, but as a general comparison. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe you've managed to paint AI in a different light that adds a dynamic to your plot. But I wouldn't pick up a book, read the back cover, see that it mentions AI and go, 'oh this one looks really good.' |

I just don't get it. I've never read a book where the amount of focus on something (something actually IN the story) is up to the reader. And I minored in English... I've read lots of stuff! So, logistically, I'm stumped. I might read it just to figure out how it (this "how *MUCH* of it is focused on sororities, well, it's up to you to decide" aspect of it, not the AI aspect) even works. |
Are you basing the AI experience in the book on your own experience? If so, what does your sorority think about it?
|
So do you have any updates regarding when your book will be published?
|
I don't think so...

If you wish to join XYZ as an AI, turn to page 42 or If you wish to enter the dark cave to slay the robot monster & then shop for a few more sororities, turn to page 96. I'm an AI and I think it is a silly, silly idea. |

It's hard to tell exactly what you mean when you say that it would be about AI; though, in a later post you say that it is not a main subject or subplot. If AI was the main story, it may be too hard to follow as most people are not familiar with the concept at all. However, I suppose it could be interesting depending on how it was woven into the story. For example, take a story about a young-ish woman's rebellion and rejection of her family's and her own values. As she struggles to find her place in life, she eventually comes to understand and accept the wisdom of those previously discarded life viewpoints. I could possibly see a reference to initiating into her mother's sorority as some kind of analogy for her "coming home" and for an acceptance of the "wisdom of the ages". I'm just kind of winging it here, making up a storyline off of the top of my head; so, please forgive me if I'm not making sense. LOL I think AI could be used as a 'plot point' if done correctly to advance the story....but probably not a whole book. No matter what, good luck to you on your project! It's tough to create something like a novel and then, after putting so much personal investment into it, to put it out there for the public. .....Kelly :) |
