YAY! That is so cute and exciting... congrats to you, your daughter, and ZTA!

FSUZeta 09-20-2006 07:44 AM

thanks to everyone for your kind words and good wishes.

the general advisor called us from the bid day party and got our daughter on the phone-i could hear the laughter and chattering in the background, and sue b.(the general advisor) said that everyone was having such a good time. my husband and i both spoke to our daughter, and i saw my husband tear up. later he said to me,"what an awesome sisterhood-here the general advisor, whom you have never met, calls you up and puts kathryn on the phone. i am so glad that with her so far from home, she has found a home and a family at samford." no parent could wish for any more!!

GtownGirl98 09-20-2006 10:09 AM

That is a really great touch, calling legacies parents from bid day! I will pass this along to my chapter!

What class!! You must be bursting with pride!! Congratulations!!

FSUZeta 09-21-2006 02:27 PM

well, i spoke with my daughter yesterday-she had a wonderful time at her bid day(actually night) festivities-they went as a group from the gym to the house, where they got a bid day buddy(crown sister). then one by one, the bid day buddies would stand up and introduce their new member and then the new member would tell one interesting fact about themselves. my daughter said that her mind went completely blank, and all she could think about was that she learned to wakeboard this summer, so that is what she shared. after all the intros. the members told the new members that there was a surprise outside for them, and when they all went outside, guess what it was?????

FSUZeta 09-21-2006 03:07 PM

sorry friends-had to go get on the other computer to print out boarding passes so that hubby and i can go to parents weekend tomorrow!!

there were limos outside waiting to whisk all the girls off to another site for the real party. my daughter said that they had finger foods and soft drinks, the girls sang some songs for them, and a good time was had by all. they got their bid day shirt, a zta window decal and a some more items which escape me right now. oh yes, they got nice black quilted bags(think vera bradley) with z t a written in script in pink.

it was so cute-as she was telling me about her goodies, she said that each new member got a door decoration-she said that they got crowns(what else?) out of bright yellow with their name on it in glitter and "only the best get crowned"-she seemed more proud of that than anything else.

i asked her about her pledge class, and she told me the names of some of the girls whom i had met with her during her orientation. i was so excited to hear that they were her sisters now, because i had kind of picked them out as rush crushes for myself!! they had their first new member meeting last night. i look forward to hearing all about that tomorrow.

in august, when my friends daughter pledged zta at u of f, i ordered 2 darling zta photo frames, one for my friends daughter and one "just in case"-hope it survives the baggage check at the airport!!

BBelleADPi 09-21-2006 05:56 PM

FSUZeta-
How wonderful that you can share your sorority with your daughter-a perfect ending for both of you! Please let us hear all about parents' weekend when you return. Congratulations on a daughter, now a sister!

FSUZeta 09-21-2006 06:15 PM

i will bbelleadpi. i just spoke to her to confirm our flight arrival time, and she said that their pledging ceremony is tonight.

thetygerlily 09-21-2006 07:28 PM

This was such a great thread- thank you for sharing your daughter's story!! I loved the detail. Since there is so much (understandable) concern about not getting into too much detail on most threads, this was a great detail-fix! The idea that you are mother-daughter and sisters is just so great... reading this made me tear up a bit. I just hope my coworkers don't walk by and notice! :) This definitely makes me want to have a family full of Greeks- so far I'm the only one, but it's a start!

FSUZeta 09-21-2006 10:02 PM

it is neat to be able to share greek life with family members-we are not near as diverse as carnations family, but amongst our family members we have zta, adpi, pi phi, chi o, a chi o, phi mu and theta. for fraternities we have ato, pike, lambda chi, k a, pi kap, tke , sae and delta upsilon. it doesn't really matter that we are in different orgs., it is the fact that we are members of greek orgs.(and family) that connect us.

Yet!

I am just amazed by the number of GLOs some families have! Of course, I have a family which could have a family reunion in a linen closet...

BamaDad DZ 09-22-2006 04:30 PM

A wonderful end to a great story. Way to go!!!

I actually said, she better be ZTA. LOL.

congrats to your daughter

FSUZeta 09-24-2006 07:33 PM

we returned from family weekend a few hours ago and had to nap!! it was so good to see our daughter. while we had met her roommate(a terrific girl who, to my chagrin, did not rush) we had not met her parents, so the two families went to dinner friday night, what a lovely family they are!! we were so glad to get to know them and thoroughly enjoyed their company. we also got to meet some of the girls on her dorm floor, and a young man whom she thinks is pretty special! he seems to be, and his family was very nice too.

saturday morning we attended a huge cross country event held in a suburb of birmingham- a highschool teammate ( one of my daughters best friends) was running for her college-florida southern college and kathryn wanted to attend. it was sooooo hot, but it was great to see ali. kathryn admitted that she did miss competitive running a little bit.

after that we grabbed some lunch and stopped at a mall and ran into more samford boys and thieir parents-i had met the young men during orientation, and one of the moms. it was nice to see her again and meet her husband, as well as meet the other parents. everyone is so nice!!

the sorority was holding an impromptu open house before the football game, but we were not able to make it. we did run into her new member coordinator(pledge trainer) and two other seniors and had nice visit with them. they were so excited about their new pledge class and raved about our daughter.
the football game was a little anticlimatic-after all i am a florida state girl and we know how to put on a football game(even when the team is bad) and my husband is from oklahoma state, so seeing a small college team was sort of like watching one of our larger highschool's play. we did like the relaxed atmosphere and the fans were no less enthusiastic. it was fun.

we had to leave too early this morning to participate in any of the festivities planned for today-but our daughter is healthy, happy and that makes us happy too.

Sounds like a great environment!

It sounds like your daughter made a great college decision.

oldrusheenowmom 09-27-2006 08:42 PM

In FSUZeta's absence from the board at the moment, I will post:

It's Samford University in Birmingham, AL

AGDLynn 09-27-2006 09:52 PM

I love the idea of calling the legacy's sorority member. It's def a lot better than having to call with not-so-good news.

This past recruitment, my chapter pledged 2 legacies. One was the sis of a current member and the other's gmother, aunt and cousin are Alpha Gams. When the NM's gathered on the hall, I asked #2 if she had talked to her gmother and she said not yet...but she did the next day. Not sure if her relatives will be able to make Initiation since it will prob be on Friday evening.

FSUZeta 09-28-2006 01:22 PM

thanks nutbrnhair, my daughter does attend samford university-don't where samson u. is located ;)

oldrusheenowmom 10-01-2006 05:56 PM

Sorry about my typo-- I did mean Samfor, but didn't proofread!! Congrats still hold true!

oldrusheenowmom 10-01-2006 05:58 PM

Obviously I did it again-- SAMFORD--

FSUZeta 10-01-2006 09:40 PM

no problem!! I certainly can't keep all the universities and colleges straight myself!!

BadSquirrelBeta 10-02-2006 12:55 AM

This is a great thread! I was pulling for her (and you) to find her GLO home with your legacy. It sounds like she felt right at home. You could feel her "clicking" with the chapter as you read the thread...

And, the parents weekend sounded great too! What a great school. Is this also your alma mater?

FSUZeta 10-02-2006 12:04 PM

no, i went to florida state. samford is a special place-i wish that i had gone there!!

Duurrr...maybe I should have clued in with the "FSU" in your signature :o .

Nonetheless, I love the thought of a small college. When I was in college we actually broke over 10,000 students so it was a rather small college by that standard.

It is so wonderful she is having such a wonderful experience. Maybe she can get that cute roommate of hers to go through Recruitment next time!!

FSUZeta 10-02-2006 05:26 PM

i sure hope so!! roomie is so cute and sweet(and smart) and would be an asset to any house!! fingers crossed that i can post a thread for roomie next year.

Samford is absolutely a beautiful school! I've visited there. A girl I went to high school went AOII there. She's amazing.

FSUZeta 10-03-2006 09:27 AM

i agree dominotheta. i have always said that if disney had designed a college campus, that would be samford.
