A school would have to have one though to complie with ADA.....

I'm confused by the comment that you have to interview somewhere for them to pref you?

She indicated that it's a colony, so that could have something to do with it. They probably want to make sure that all of the members know the amount of work that goes into a colony before they go ahead and pref them.

Yes, but they can always make it keyed, and only give keys to faculty and those who need ADA access.

PeppyGPhiB 09-18-2006 02:19 PM

Thanks, Buttonz, just went back and re-read that one is a colony.

LilLady, I hope you take into account the potentially extra-special experience you would get out of helping to colonize a chapter. I was in the first initiated pledge class of my chapter, and it was very cool. Not a lot of people get to do that.

Geez Buttons...did someone rearrange all the letters on your keyboard??:p :p

Either my school doesn't comply or there are circumstances which allow some buildings not to have elevators. There's a building on my alma mater's campus that, to this day, doesn't have any elevators. There's a handicap ramp and a handicap accessible bathroom on the first floor where the conference rooms are. But, that's it for ADA-compliance (in that building, anyway).

...end hijack...

lillady85 09-18-2006 02:21 PM

Oh, I'm sorry! I walk up the stairs of the downtown building because I always do it as exercise. There are elevators in the building, I just don't use them because I like to do some walking. Oh, but yeah, the interview is for a colony. They have this one on one session with you since the girls who join this quarter will be founders. I hope it goes well! :)

If a building is over a certain # of years old, and it was built before ADA requirments and it would ruin the building to put in elevators and the like, they don't have to have them...there is a movie theater by me like that, and while I love the theater, it is a pain in the neck.

That's what I figured :)

I really hope that it goes well...I think as a junior a colony is something that you should take a serious look at...you can get invovled big time right away, which is something that I'd be looking for...while you might not get the chance to get invovled big time right awya at an already established chaper.

What happens if a handicapped person wants to work there? Could (s)he potentially sue the theater?

No, but they would have to "reasonably accommodate her". Meaning making sure all of her job requirements could be done from the first floor, or finding some way to get her up the stairs, etc...

KitKatMac 09-18-2006 03:06 PM

At the college i went to last year of the 5 dorms only 2 had elevators and for all of the academic buliding only 1 had an elevator and 1 was begining the process of installing one.

AOIIalum 09-18-2006 03:22 PM

If you're where I think you are then I would tend to doubt that studying abroad would be a problem. You may want to ask your Rho Mu about this if you haven't already! Continued good luck to you.

GtownGirl98 09-18-2006 03:38 PM

AGD had an interview for my colony... I don't know if it was for the same reason or not... I just know that instead of the skit night, we had interviews.

Good Luck!

lillady85 09-18-2006 03:57 PM

Yay! It went very well!!!

I met with the lady who will be the NM coordinator/instructor and an alumna from a nearby school that is a C.J. I think it went very well because I asked questions, they laughed at my joke and we even knew people in common from the school I transferred from! Plus, I asked about the study abroad and they suggested I go because if I was given a bid and decided to join then I would be initiated later on and/or specifics could be worked out later. Overall? I think it went great and I am now seriously considering C.J. as an option. Hopefully I get pref'd!! ::crosses fingers::

As for ADA,
My old school had one elevator in one of the dorms! We did a study in my bio class as to whether or not the school was ADA up to date. Turned out that 95% of the buildings weren't and that most of the parking spots and bathrooms weren't either! :(

Buttonz 09-18-2006 04:00 PM

It's sad to see that a lot of school aren't up to date ADA wise...neither is my school, and it's sad esp when students in my major spend a lot of time learning about ADA...

I'm so glad that the interview went well for you and that your considering CJ now! :D

your outfit sounds darling. good luck!!

sailboatgirl 09-18-2006 06:28 PM

It sounds as if you have a great mind set about recruitment and as if there are lots of wonderful groups on your campus!

Best of luck to you!

wishing you lots of luck!

Then again, red and white are generic enough colors that it wouldn't be as obvious as scarlett and olive or lavender and maroon.

Yep, I looked it up, you're right. I didn't know that "olive" was the official. I was thinking it was scarlett and green for whatever reason.:)

lillady85 09-19-2006 11:43 PM

Hello everyone. I just got back from recruitment and wanted to post before I got super tired and fell asleep. I don't know how I should proceed as I'm kind of sad how today went. I saw Tommy and DeeDee today.

Today was a really long day even though it was only two groups. I had a super early class and so being up from 6am really kind of put me in a bad spot since by the time 7pm rolled around, I was about ready to curl up in my bed. However, I drank some juice and tried to be as upbeat as possible.

Tommy- I went in with high hopes and left kind of down. We talked to 4-5 girls and to be honest, I think only one of them actually talked TO me instead of just AT me. I really do like them as girls, they seem like the kind that I would have fun partying with but I don't know if I can see myself joining their sisterhood. Perhaps I should not worry too much as they seem to be one of the more popular sororities so I don't know if I would even get pref'd

DeeDee- I like this group overall even though my initial rusher was kind of mean and both her and the other rusher kept talking about their boyfriends which I didn't like since it made me uncomfortable. Not so much that it had to deal with her bf but rather, some of the things she said. However, the next two rushers that came were very nice and one of them even remembered me from the very first day!

Overall, I def see myself needing to meet with the other two groups to see where I rank everyone for myself. However, Thursday is when I fill out my pref card and I don't even find out who pref'd me until Friday at night!! I'm kind of scared now because I keep thinking, what if no one pref's me? I know I've been myself and I've had some really good conversations with girls so hopefull they remember me and invite me back. I guess we'll see soon enough. Night everyone!

Buttonz 09-19-2006 11:45 PM

*hugs* Breathe...

SPend some time iwth the other two groups, and see how it goes. Relax, and bey ourself. And it will all be fine :)

lillady85 09-22-2006 03:04 PM

Well, I know I dropped out of the radar but I wanted to update it for all those who were very nice and supportive (which was everyone!)

I get my invites tonight. It was impossible for me to rank them as I honestly did love my 2,3 and 4 choices so I felt bad putting them in the order that I had to since I would love it if I got an invite to any of them. I'll post Sunday again and do the big reveal.

Good, I was wondering what had happened to you. It sounds like you're having an amazing recruitment. I can't wait to hear where you end up on Sunday!

lillady85 09-23-2006 02:18 AM

Well, I came here to post regardless of good or bad news so here it goes.
I got an invite to one pref tea for tomorrow. At first I was sad because it was disapointing but I came to the conclusion that I should go to it with good spirits as they did ask me back. I don't know which one as our rho mu's aren't allowed to tell us but I do know its one of my top three. So, I'll post tomorrow after pref tea who I attended and what happened. I'm still sad but glad that one group did see me as someone who could join their sisterhood.

I'm sorry that your a little disappointed, but just remember, you could only get one bid. And if it was one of your top three, that makes it even better.

Here is to wishing you lots of luck otmrorow night!

BTW< how did you rank them?

lillady85 09-23-2006 12:19 PM

Hi,
I just wanted to clarify a few things. I was pretty upset last night when I posted and I've had an entire night to think it over. I know that I can only get one bid but the biggest reason why I felt so bad is that I kept hearing about suicide bidding. I figured, if I can only put one option down, isn't it pretty much the same? Plus, I don't know who pref'd me and I don't know if I was on their A or B list so what happens if I don't get a bid from my only pref tea?

I'm going tonight because I really do want to go and I have been looking forward to pref tea for two weeks now. Thank you for all the support, I really do appreciate it. I'm just a little sad because one can't help wonder...why not me?

Oops, I forgot to add how I ranked them

Joey
DeeDee
CJ
Johnny
Tommy

gphiangel624 09-23-2006 12:24 PM

If you are only invited to one preference party, you can only attend one preference party and put one chapter down on your pref card. So that is NOT an Intentional Single Preference ("suicide"). If you had been invited to and attended 2 pref parties and only put one chapter down, then you have ISP'd and your choices are more limited due to your own intentions.

Enjoy your pref tea, good luck to you, and don't stress! You've "played the game right" and I sincerely hope it all works out for you!

lillady85 09-23-2006 11:24 PM

I went to the pref tea of C.J the colony tonight. I should get a call sometime tonight to know if I got a bid or not. I'll let you know.

SigKapSweetie 09-23-2006 11:37 PM

I'm sending you good luck vibes! Hopefully things will go well for you! :)

lillady85 09-24-2006 02:21 AM

Well...I got the call about a minute ago.

I don't know if anyone is online right now so I'll post tomorrow morning.

Buttonz 09-24-2006 02:32 AM

And????

I really hope it went well.....

EtaPhiZTA 09-24-2006 10:19 AM

Please do tell! I am sending good wished your way!:)
