Agree. Rho chapter probably has a lot of history.
Many years ago I remember at one of our conventions meeting an awesome lady from there. I believe her name was Ida.

KSUViolet06 11-11-2009 06:28 PM

We are presenting at University of Michigan-Flint!

I do not know which other groups will be presenting.

Florida State is open for expansion. I believe the housing corporation still owns the house.

ETA: Rho was chartered in 2/2/1920 and remained open until 1990. In 1992, Rho was redeveloped and remained open until 1999.
There are a few issues that I think are going to hurt our success in reopening this chapter. We have actually recolonized Rho chapter 5 times. It is going to be difficult to prove to the Extension Committee how we will be successful for a 6th time without closing again (not to mention, we didn't necessarily leave on good terms with the University...). Also, Sigma Delta Tau is currently residing in the old Tri Sigma house, with no plans for alternate housing. I don't think the institution is so keen on having to displace one chapter just to bring another on.

So, I'm wary. Still keeping my fingers crossed! I'm hoping I'm wrong!

What does everyone think of the post over on the Expansion thread in the Greek Life Forum of the following campuses being open for presentations?

Boise State University

University of Connecticut - Stamford

University of Tampa

University of Texas-El Paso

Do you think we have our hands full enough with colonizations already or will we perhaps make a stab at these campuses?

Any news on Florida State?

Our expansion team is ALWAYS exploring new opportunities, so you never know!

I'd like to see us take a look at UTEP and Tampa for sure (the others would be good too).

FSU presentations are the week of March 22nd, and the decision will be announced April 9th. So they are still in the early phases (the sororities are still sending in packets and doing exploratory visits).

Valdosta State University, Georgia Southern, Augusta State.

We only have 2 chapters in Georgia (Atlanta has Epsilon Theta & Savannah has Eta Rho). Also only 2 alum chapters (Atlanta & Savannah). We need more Sigma love in the Peach state! :D:D

FSU news....Sigma will not be persuing the opportunity to present. Executive Council did not find it in the best interest of Sigma to proceed at this moment in time.

Thanks for the update and keeping us in the loop! While part of me is sad we won't be re-colonizing Rho at this time, I totally trust Executive Council and know that not persuing this will open us up for great opportunities at other colleges/universities!

We have been invited to present at UM-Kansas City!

Nice! First Mizzou and now possibly UMKC?! That's fantastic! Do we know who else is presenting?

I'm not sure.

To add to this thread, we are presenting at Bridgewater State College (MA) and Boise State as well!

Sorry for the crash!

I love and adore those campuses! Valdosta is bringing on ASA --maybe this fall?- and Southern is watching quota to see if there's a need, according to my sources. Two groups will need to match quota. There are 3 or 4 groups who used to be there a ways back, one of whom has a lot on Greek Row.

Augusta State--does anyone know how their Greek system is coming along? They now have ADPi, Zeta, and Phi Mu.

I would love to see Sigma at deleware, indiana university, barnard/columbia or boston university. :) i know deleware always considers expanding, it would be nice to look into that since we don't have a chapter in that state yet.. and arizona would be cool, we don't have many chapters out west.

We were not chosen to colonize at University of Missouri-Kansas City. But we still have Boise State and Bridgewater State to present at and TWO charterings this month! :)

IU Bloomington is possibly open for extension. This would be a recolonization, but there are heavy housing requirements and we still have not completed construction at Mizzou. I don't know if we will submit but I DESPERATELY hope so...our last recolonization there was not successful, but I really believe that we can handle the effort now.

We've got a BIG presentation in the Spring at Drexel for another recolonization. We've submitted to a few other big schools and some mid-sized schools at well. We've really worked to revamp our materials and our process this semester, so we will see what happens!

Pardon my crash, but (as ASA is in the same boat) the GC member who mentioned the extension said whatever group came in would NOT get a house/there would be no room to build. So in other words...it would be the same deal as last time.

I am SO excited about what our expansion team is doing right now. I feel that they just have such a good vision for where our sorority is going I am so proud of them. The more I learn about Sigma the more I love it.

Our expansion team is fantastic. We've been on a roll recently with presentations and such and I can't wait to see what else is to come!

I really hope to see a Tri-Sigma chapter in the state of Maryland. Possibly Salisbury?

sigmaceli 12-17-2010 05:36 PM

You know, this thread really led me to think about recolonizations becoming a focus, since we've had so many closures. We have 78 closed chapters on our chapter roll! There are a number that I feel would probably be a priority in the next few years to make happen, if the conditions are all right.

Of course, we would want single letter chapters to reopen, including: Delta (Vanderbilt, if we want to be sneaky ;)), Zeta (Buffalo State), Iota (Northern Colorado), Kappa (Miami-OH), Rho (Florida State), Sigma (Western Colorado), Tau (NM Highlands) and Phi (Ohio).

But there are some prominent institutions that we were not successful at and sad closures that could also be prime for success in present-day Tri Sigma-land. I would argue these because of alumnae strength in most of these areas and/or institutional size/support that we would have the pieces in place to be successful at these institutions if they were open for expansion and we were invited to present: Alpha Delta (Drexel), Alpha Eta (Butler), Alpha Sigma (USM), Gamma Alpha (Illinois), Gamma Eta (Loyola NOLA), Gamma Theta (Bradley), Gamma Omicron (Northern Iowa), Gamma Upsilon (Marquette), Delta Mu (Rutgers), Delta Phi (Kansas State), Zeta Nu (UMBC), Zeta Sigma (Duquesne).

I wish there were more that I could personally argue could be successes at this time. I may be wrong! And there are those dream schools and killer recolonizations that we likely don't have the means to make happen now. I won't bore/depress you with the details, lol. We know who they are. And one day, I believe that we will be able to prepare for them. NHQ has really made strides to be more successful/rebrand our efforts. With time, I think we can slowly start to make these happen. But we need our current chapters and colonies to meet their goals and be stable before those BHAGs can be reached!

/end philosophical Tri Sigma rant...and back to work. :(

KSUViolet06 02-08-2011 04:07 PM

Just wanted to add that we are presenting at Drexel today!

This Illinois girl would love to see us back at both Bradley and U of I! We would have to commit a LOT of money to U of I - housing is really expensive there and to be successful on campus, you need a house.

I hope we return to Mississippi soon...and colonize somewhere in Alabama too!!

To spice things up in here….

I would be really excited to see us at an Ivy League or big Southern university like Bama or Ole Miss. I know the Bama or Ole Miss dream is a long shot, but I think an Ivy would be a reasonable stretch.

Maybe I'm being a bit greedy, but I would love to see New York University too.

KSUViolet06 12-21-2013 10:15 PM

^^^^Bama and Ole Miss have both had expansions within the past 2 years after it took them a number of years to get it (like, neither school had added new group since the 70s.)

I'd personally like to see us have a bigger presence out West, as that is where I'm from!

Due to the decades that went by before this expansion and the tremendous amount of resources required, I have a feeling I may be a Golden Violet before this dream is a possibility.

On a side note, I also love seeing rechartering chapters. It's great to see the alumnae coming home.
