Me too. Although I do love their french fries.

We used to have Hardees in the Chicago area, but they all closed several years back. I try to go to a Hardees whenever I am Downstate.

I also like Chic-Fil-A - we had that in Bloomington but again, not out this way.

BrooklynCutie 12-20-2006 02:58 AM

There is one checkers I know of in NYC!

I know this thread is pretty old. But When I read you loved Checkers I had to chime in. I also love going to Checkers when I am in Fl because I THOUGHT there wasn't one in NY farless in NYC. Low and behold my boyfriend took me to checkers right in his neighborhood.

:(

We don't have those in DC that I know of.

The closest one is out in Frederick.

I want to know why we don't have a damn Sonic - we get their commercials but the closest one is in Delaware. WTF?

hazelle 12-20-2006 09:36 AM

May I ask for the upcoming posters to explain why or what a certain chain has for special stuff...since most of us might be on the road for the holidays and may pass by one and find new tasty treats!!??

Meanwhile, I am fortunate in that I work near both the vicinity of the last Roy Rogers which were bought out and are only in the Montgomery/Frederick counties of Maryland--even their kid burgers rock since they are absolutely made the minute you order them!! AND then the Checkers in Frederick which has some of the most incredible fries and always are making interesting new burger combos etc. but the best is unlike most of the fast foods whose drinks are no taste all ice...if you sip it for moment you will notice...but most folks are gulping and never do...their drinks are absolutely perfectly mixed...their cherry cokes are to die for...like a true fountain drink! And who does have a SONIC I am also tired of seeing the ads on tv here in DC and havent a clue where the closest one is.......

Seriously? When I was a kid, we ate at the original Hardees many, many times. It was good then, but it has gone way downhill, I think. We only go to Hardees now if there is no other option. Even my kids don't like it.

Well, now my jealousy knows no bounds. What I wouldn't give for a Double R-Bar Burger!

We get commercials here in CT, and there's not one in New England. We used to get Quizno's commercials as well before there was one in the area. For some reason they just like to tease us.

Yeah, the SONIC commercials make me mad. When Krispy Kreme opened in CT, we took a couple of roadtrips to get them. They're still the only donuts I'll eat.
I'm so glad we have Quiznos now. It's just Sonic I really want. And I'm going to visit an In N Out as soon as I can get on the west coast.

Are there any in MA? I know the Prudential one closed; I used to get something there when I'd go to Copley/Prudential for Christmas shopping, but it was never all that busy.

Me too! We need one in New England, somewhere!!

When we flew out of the New Orleans airport the Saturday after Thanskgiving, we got there good and early and were looking forward to eating Sonic for lunch. The place was closed!! So we waited in the long line for a catfish po boy at Popeyes, only to find that they were out of bread. It was a Subway for us.

Someone mentioned Super Dog... we had that for dinner when we connected in Chicago. Oh, was that good!!!

I read in the Globe that that was due to a dispute with the landlord. Sad! Then the one in Medford closed. According to KrispyKreme.com, the only one left is Dedham.

purplewindex 12-20-2006 11:30 AM

I agree about the Sonic commercials. The food looks so yummy in the commercials, yet the closest one here is the next state over and down a ways. I went to Florida to visit my grandparents a few years ago and as we were driving somewhere, I was so excited to see a Sonic! I tried it, and it was so good. I wish we had one in Michigan. :(

hazelle 12-20-2006 11:53 AM

Ok...despite the fact i would crawl on my belly over broken glass to get to a White Castle....and not the ones in the freezer section of WalMart....

if we found a Sonic, what is the best thing on the menu?? FYI the current burgers at Checkers..some kind of steak double burger thing...is better than any Big Mac in case you find a Checkers and want to try it.

Once went all the way to Baltimore just to try Popeye's..savored that chicken leg like it was the "last chicken in Atlanta" like in Gone with the Wind....so incredible and such a change then when all we had was KFC.

hazelle 12-20-2006 11:55 AM

In fact, should anyone ever have a huge box of White Castle....let me know...will meet you by the Maryland I 270 visitors center...will trade Checkers burgers for those marvelous gems!!(have to love mustard tho' to truely appreciate them, huh?)

hazelle 12-20-2006 11:57 AM

And one more, cant stand it....too many posts: what is an In and Out...where is it..and what is so super?? It is like it is an entire new country when you don't have the newer fast foods but then again, I have three Roy Rogers within twenty miles of me....guess it is a tradeoff

I really don't get the appeal of White Castle. (Or Krystal Burgers, for that matter.) Of course, I hate onions on burgers, and they both load up on the chopped onions. But I want a real burger, not a burgerette.

The milkshakes and slushy fruit drinks (can't remember right now what they call them). Otherwise, the food is just "eh" -- not bad but not great. The reason to go there is for the drive-in experience, not for the food.

Popeye's is good, but Bojangles is much better.

Google In N Out. Also, google 100x100+In N Out for the images. I think they're only in CA and AZ.
And please, edit your post if you've got more to say. Triple posting is not kosher for messageboard etiquette.

I long for the day Charlotte gets a Popeye's. But I get to get some in 48 hours!! :D

cutiepatootie 12-20-2006 01:19 PM

Your not a true so californian if In and Out is not on the top of your list.

In and out
Chick-fil-A ( loved it in Arkansas and now there here in calif)
Braums (both ice cream and their burgers)
Albertos
SONIC! ( give me a cherry lime-aide or a sweatheart shake anyday!)
We only have one in so calif and that is by the park ( disneyland)

Tom's burgers ( calif thing)

We have them in Nevada too. In fact UNLV has one right next to Campus.

Did I strike a chord? :D

Sorry, but Bojangles always wins out over Popeye's. I could live on the country ham biscuits alone -- well, except for the whole clogging my arteries thing -- and the tea.

ISUKappa 12-20-2006 04:20 PM

We finally got a Sonic here. When it opened at the beginning of the month, they had to have people direct traffic at the location because so many people wanted to eat there. The husband said trying to drive was a mess in that area.

Tom Earp 12-20-2006 05:39 PM

White Castle Sucks.

If some want Belly Bomers, try :

Cozy Burgers from Salina, Ks.:D

They ship and they are fantastic!!!!:)

Trust Me, Nuke them for a little snak. Cannot eat just one!!!!:D

Super Dawg's is THE BEST!!!! I don't think I eat any hot dogs except theirs any more.

Popeye's Red Beans and Rice is the best I've ever had in a restaurant!

Those of you who live/work outside NYC, envy me. :p

Pret A Manger

Their offerings (sandwiches and salads, mostly) are fresh, and they don't hold anything over to sell tomorrow - anything that isn't sold is donated to City Harvest NY.

I first discovered them a few years ago in London. Only recently did I learn that they'd expanded to NYC. I had a lovely chicken sandwich for lunch... Hit 'em with some email; you might convince them to expand to where you live or work. It's a good product.

layla2728 12-21-2006 12:11 AM

The last time I was in Seattle, I went to Red Robin (which to my knowledge is nowhere near South Florida), and looooved the cheeseburger I had.

One reason I'm glad I live in the South though: Chick-Fil-A :)

And finally, if you ever happen to go to Western Australia (I was there for study abroad), Chicken Treat is AMAZING.

Thrillhouse 12-21-2006 12:13 AM

My favorite fast food place evah:

I wish they still had them here :(

sarahanne 12-21-2006 12:19 AM

If you're ever in Louisiana, you should go to a Raisin' Canes. It's the best friggin' chicken fingers, ever, and make sure you get and extra pack of sauce, because it is amazing!

I was going to add Raisin' Canes to the list! We have a couple here in Columbus and their chicken fingers are out of this world.

OhSoVeryLadylike 12-21-2006 01:11 AM

Only likes the bread. Tenders aren't all that to me and the sauce is horrible...Person who was there for the original one...

I have to ditto this.

I was introduced to Canes the last time I was in the BR and absolutely fell in love it. Canes tastes even better after you've been at the bars drinking.

To answer the OP, I'm not a real big fast food person, but we do not have the following in Hawaii. Some of these are restaurants and non fast food joints but who cares:

Sonic
Hardees
Olive Garden
Applebee's
White Castle
In and Out (usually my first stop when I'm in California)
Chick-fil-A

IHOP used to be limited to Maui, but we finally got one on Oahu. Krispy Kreme is still only on Maui.

And after greeklawgirl introduced me to this the last time were in SoCal, Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles will be added as a MUST GO TO next time I'm in the area.

macallan25 12-21-2006 01:52 AM

Whataburger.

End thread.

Oops! Make that DAWG! Thanks for the correction, Honey. I had a Whoopskidawg and it was amazing.

Ditto on the Popeye's red beans and rice.

Does anyone remember the McDonald's Cheddar Melt? Quarter pounder on a rye roll with grilled onions and cheese sauce. They were a "only for a limited time" menu item, and I was eating them every day.

KSigkid 12-21-2006 12:35 PM

Two places I miss from Boston:

Anna's Taqueria and Eagle's Deli. Those are my two favorites (unless In and Out moved into town).

tunatartare 12-21-2006 12:45 PM

Gray's Papaya or any of the other Papaya places in NYC. (Although Gray's on 72nd and Broadway is still my favorite.)

I remember that! So good! My favourite McD's sandwich was the Chicken Cordon Bleu but the McRib was pretty awesome too.

When I was in MD I used think the same thing. Now I have two within a mile distance from my house, and about another 10 within 10 minutes. It will really be ok if I don't see Sonic after I move.

For me, when I go home to Wisconsin, I have to hit Culvers for custard or Krolls for a hamburger--mostly local fast food places. In terms of big chains, I love Hardees when I am home. Also, any place that serves fried cheese curds and brats.

Jimmy Choo 12-21-2006 02:04 PM

We have finally gotten a couple of Five Guys Burgers down here in NC. That place is great!

Mmm yes it is. The've been in the DC metro area forever (I think the original one is in Alexandria) but I'd never been. Went for the first time last week, it lived up to the hype.
