Question -

A couple of my LB's have sons that are around 5 and can frequently be seen rockin' "future Nupe" or "my daddy's a Kappa", or rockin' the colors, holding the kane, etc. While it clearly isn't an issue now, at what point (age) should your child stop rockin' nalia if not in the org! I have my own theory but interested in others views.

pinkies up 08-01-2006 04:20 PM

My hubby and I have four children and the 2 boys (7 and 6) wear them now, however I think when they are about 10 it's time to stop. Our girls wear the future AKA shirts as well. However, they wear them if we're at a greek function. What age do you think is too old?

Da Mayor 08-01-2006 04:24 PM

I jokingly told them that if they're old enough to grow hair anywhere but their heads...;)

My Kappa Leaguers wanted to wear "future Kappa" shirts...this led to a looonnng discussion. My first impulse was to look at them silly, but after I explained they understood.

The Kappa Leaguers out here are out of control sometimes. I find myself checking a number of the youth groups here...they seem to think they can address me and compare with me...I let them know quick...

DST_philoso4 08-04-2006 09:30 AM

WOW, I didn't know ppl got so mad over some things. Like, the stories of ppl rockin' a shirt because it matched etc. is clearly unacceptable. But touching canes paddles etc., I've never heard of anyone flipping over that. As a matter of fact, some of my boys who are Kappas were teaching me how to twirl with their canes! I don't see the big deal with people touching my things, like I have a family paddle that is 5 feet tall, and OF COURSE, people are drawn to it, and other gifts that I received upon crossing, jewelry boxes, pillows etc. people want to see, so I don't mind if they pick them up and look at them [they can't LAY on them, but they can look]. I feel like sometimes people cross the line of "worshiping" these things. While I will NOT let my letters be disrespected, I don't mind people "touching" my things. And there have been times when I was with my ex, who's an Alpha, at a greek event, and I may be cold he'd ask if I wanted his line Jacket, I never accepted, but it doesn't seem like a big deal to me, I'm not trying to "perp", and it's just not that serious...... now if someone was trying to take down one of my degrees off the wall, THAT'S a different story! I have them nicely framed and I WILL shank someone!! lmao j/k :D :D

It's ALWAYS an issue no matter how old or young they are! I can't STAND those shirts! Show you're a future "insert org here" by doing some service and other GOOD things they do in the community! Your parents being one does not let you lay claim to being one! My bro, who is 9, is dead set on being a Kappa  because of the colors "red and white for boys as he says" and he knows so many, they've even offered to show him how to cane--I never let it go down though. But I let him know QUICK that going around saying that he "is going to be" or, God forbid, having one of those idiot shirts is NOT what's up! If when he gets to college he's tip top on his game, and they choose him, then fine, until then, it's not up for discussion, but we do work on things that'll make him an excellent candidate like service, political involvement, learning other languages, extra-curricular business, science and engineering programs and studying abroad! HE should be more concerned about being a FUTURE DOCTOR/ENGINEER/LAWYER above all, everything else is a DISTANT second!

I would think 10. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the future shirts and I've never bought one for my niece who is 3. I'm not sensitive with people touching greek items but I would never let my significant other wear my items.

This is true. Our kids know this is something they do in college and when they have the grades. We take them to community service functions when possible, but because they're 7,6,3,and 1, I never really dressed them in the shirts for them. Mainly I do it for me.

lol I feel you. MAN, but what is NOT what's up, is seeing like SIXTEEN YEAR OLDS [or someone who's big enough where you think they're a SOROR initially] rockin' "future ______ " warm ups, and I've seen it, I'll just say VERRRRRRRRRRRRRY VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY recently!!

I almost feel bad for those kids. That is a straight SET UP by their parents. Because when they go to college....NEXT YEAR.... it'll still fit, and I PRAY for mercy on them when the orgs chapter on that yard sees them rockin' that! :(

bakingpoodle 08-05-2006 10:00 PM

Something similar happened to me before I became greek. My boyfriend was a Mason and I was drinking water from a Mason glass. He had a fit and explained to my why I couldn't drink from it. I understand now that I am greek myself.

Now that's WAYYYYYYY too old. I don't know how I feel about the girls organizations. We have Ivyettes and the Deltas have Cream De La Cream, however, they DO NOT wear anything that can be alluded to a sorority. Ivyettes wear green and white, and the Cream's wear white and black. They are told this is not a Pre-AKA organization and not to go to ______ College/University and wear these shirt or walk up to an AKA and say "I was an Ivyette".

Even though I am an active member of my sorority and I want my daughters to one day experience this sisterhood, they do not have the right to be AKA's. Just because mama is one doesn't mean they have automatic rights. I do not want them going the legacy way. Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't have that privillege and I'm glad that I didn't. If they choose to go another route... , (LOL) I will support them because they have to love their organization. I don't want them in AKA if their hearts aren't in it.

1st paragraph: lmao, who you tellin' u can imagine my HORROR when I mistook these babes for sorority women [i.e., they looked old enough to be in one]. that's cool the high school groups there don't actually wear colors, around these parts they do! Well, at least the main color, like the Delta girls and Kappa boys groups wear Black and red [which you will also see Deltas and Kappas rockin'] but everyone else actually wears the orgs colors. While I'm like :( on that, it's not that big of a deal. HOWEVER I've been other places where they have hand signs, "calls", and well, basically everything the frats/sororities have, and I'm like  as a matter of fact, check out this page and tell me what you think, all I have to say is      I found it when I was looking for more information on it for my brother:

http://www.geocities.com/kl_1922/KLphotos.html *shaking head* someone needs to get BEAT DOWN!

2nd paragraph: I wish everyone felt like that! I've seen it in EVERY org. It is sickening to hear on all occassions. I remember on one occassion I was out with a friend of mine who's an AKA, and a girl came up to her and was like [verbatim] "uh, yeah, my mama is a "skee-wee" *throwing up pinky* I'm going to be one of your sorors soon" I counted to ten like A HUNNID TIMES! but since that didn't work, and the visions of me knocking her to the ground and riverdancing on her chest just wouldn't go away, I had to just go on ahead and leave.

And could somebody PULEEEEZ tell them that real Kappa men DO NOT WEAR SAGGIN' PANTS AND SHOW THE DRAWS ALL IN PUBLIC:eek: I'm still in shock!!

LMAO about visions of doing the riverdance. Yeah, sista girl got off real easy with that one. Had we been not in a public view, I might have had to get real undignified with her....;) I think that we as greeks ought to talk about this and inform and educate about the do's and the dont's of wanting to be members.

Sistergreek Abaici made a good point that it's all emulation for the kids. But who in Clarksdale, MS are these kids emulating? I refuse to believe that there is a legitimate advisor in his right mind that would endorse young boys having a "freak show" with whipped cream. Did y'all see one of the names the kid had on that photo page? Just tragic.... A lot of people need their butt whooped really badly.

ETA:

Sistergreek DST_philoso4, did you find this site for the Mobile Kappa League? I just wanted to be helpful, and this looked like some good stuff.

I don't know not one Kappa who would condone any mess like this. Like you said Kappas with their pants hanging off of their behinds????!!!! What is wrong with our youth? They do know that they have to go to college to become a Kappa right? With all of this 'freaking' going on I want to know what kind of grades they have?

Thank you, that one is MUCH better! I think the one above was one of the first I found....needless to say I couldn't look any further. I know the KL is a GOOD program, but I didn't want to see ANY MORE websites in fear I may run across this consistently.....OR WORSE!!!! But it's always good to focus on the good and NOT just the bad, thanks for the page, it paints a MUCH better picture of the Kappa League and its programs! I peeped some of the names, [1 P.M., FANTASTY etc.] but that site is SO TRAGIC I would've written a dissertation for real going off on every detail! I could just imagine myself walking into a party sponsored by my bro's group, once he gets in ;) , and seeing that and DRAGGING HIM OUT BY HIS EAR!!! but Abaici, sadly, I'm sure we ALL know who they're emulating, we've seen it before in TOO MANY stepshows. While I don't even condone of it in REAL stepshows, they are grown men, which one of them felt it was ok to have these BOYS do this AT A PARTY WITH ONLY TOWELS ON!?!?!?....AND WHERE ARE THEY BOYS' PARENTS?!

I think we ALL need help on this one. I say we all head down to Clarksdale, MS BELTS IN HAND and just go to work! :D

I'm not feeling the canes either, but I think that's something that's common among the kappa league. :(

Sadly, I can think of at least 2-3 kappas who would [THEIR ADVISORS]. I know AT LEAST one of them had to happen upon that page, it is SO not hard to find! And they had to be at the party, or at least have heard about it.

Girl, they don't have to go to college, they can just bask in high school glory and being "midnight love" and "1 pretty mutha...." I mean WHO GAVE THEM those "names" [and why]

what kind of grades.....AND KIDS!!! because the chix standing around were ALL IN!!! and apparently it was a pajama party....that combination is scary!!! :(

The EM chapter will gladely put them back in their places.

Greeks all! I took the liberty of checking and Clarksdale,MS is not listed in the national directory of Kappa Leagues (sorry guys u need a membership ID to access it). I am a DIE HARD Kappa Leaguer. We did not have line names or kanes (we had staffs). We wore red and black, but we could not do a lot of things.

Nationals dictates:

1) Kappa Leaguers are not allowed to wear or display the Greek insignia, letters or symbols belonging to or associated with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

2) Kappa Leaguers are not allowed to carry canes or use any hand symbols or variations thereof, used by any member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. past or present.

3) The utterance of calls or chants by Kappa Leaguers is strictly prohibited.

4) Kappa Leaguers are not allowed to use the names Playboy, Prettyboy, or Nupe.

5) Kappa Leaguers are not allowed to refer to themselves as being members of a Junior Fraternity or Fraternity.

6) Membership in a Kappa League does not imply the possible or expected acceptance into any undergraduate chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

So I ask. WTF are these children being taught and who the hell is responsible!?!

Thats not right. I am really offended. Even though they are kids, they need to be checked on whats right and wrong and what a greek would say and do to them. And if their advisors aren't checking them, then they need to be pulled up too.

Thank you for the update, I'm sure there is a collective sigh of relief! The page does appear to be somewhat old, just by looking at the site, there is probably a REASON they aren't listed in the Kappa League directory [anymore]. Hopefully if they do come back, it will be with a complete "makeover"

dang, why you tryna take the heat off the Kappa League?! lmao :D but this was discussed earlier in the thread, we talked about these types of "issues" Since I don't deal with DelTeens, G.E.M.S. or other groups, by whatever names, that are for teens, nor was I in one, I don't know the rules off hand. But since our hand sign, call etc. are "unofficial", the by-laws probably don't speak directly to this. That is one of those things where chapter members should use their discretion as to what IS and IS NOT appropriate. Are there any sorors who can help me out with this one?

I agree with everyone that if they are members of a league that is sponsored by a D9 fraternity/sorority, they shouldn't be doing that at all. I thougth the first pic of the Delta Teens was nice, but the second one was a little too close for confort. I'm not even going to go on the wannabe AKAs and Kappas.

But elemulating the D9 groups is not new where I come from. I went to a all-black high school where there were "fraternities" and "sororities". The had names that may have had either one greek letter (ex. Omega Fly Brothers) or none at all (ex. US Classy Queens). All they did was hang out with each other, had little step shows and probates on the courtyard, and wore matching t-shirts. They also had a little "pledging" period, in which my day it was praticing the step routine, having them line up on the courtyard and doing certain stunts (seremating was one I remember one of my classmates doing and another one where a big person had to roll himself down the street). THEY WERE NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY D9 GROUP.

Some of there groups have faded away, but some (like the two I mentioned) are still at my high school. My cousin, who goes to the same high school now, is a US Classy Queen. But times have changed. They do go around other high schools and the community to step competitons. But let me give you one example on how things changed. My cousin (the one mentioned) was given a suprise Sweet 16 in December. A song came on and the boys starting party hopping and throwing up hooks. At first I was like WTF? Then it dawned on me that they are Omega Fly Brothers. My uncle, who is an Omega, got a kick out of it. I know some may not understand why I didn't hem them up, but also going to that school made me understand why they were doing it.

ETA: The Omega Fly Brothers do have a group page on MySpace.

But since our hand sign, call etc. are "unofficial", the by-laws probably don't speak directly to this. That is one of those things where chapter members should use their discretion as to what IS and IS NOT appropriate. Are there any sorors who can help me out with this one?

I work with our chapter's Delta GEMS and we told them day 1, GEMS is not a sorority, it is not the precursor to DST, etc. There are no hand signs for them or anything of the like. We mentor and prepare them for college not sorority life. We discussed sorority life once but mainly the sisterhood part. :D

Interesting photos on that site as well as what Marquise has posted.

In terms of Future XYZ shirts, I don't care for those so I would not purchase. I would rather see My Mother/Father is a XYZ and believe those should not be worn past 8 years old.
