Generally speaking, yes. Rush chairs have one mission in life -- to recruit as many guys as possible who will 'fit in' with their chapter. In many cases, unfortunately, they will use whatever B.S. line to hook you in.

If I were you, I'd go to the Greek Life advisor and look at the numbers -- what houses have the highest GPA? You might want to start with those guys first. Also look into whether or not they have required study time for their new associates -- a lot will. Honesty is your best policy, even if you're not likely to receive it back. Just do your research and realize that Rush chairs are probably your single worst source of information.

ilikehazing 04-27-2006 04:37 PM

Our pledging took quite a bit longer than that, and our initiation week was a week.

It isn't BS, but they won't cut you slack if you don't use the time they give you to actually study. So if you have homework due the next day, but didn't use your three or four hours of free time to get it done then it falls on your shoulders. If you are given enough notification of an event, then you should be able to plan your study hours around that event.

adpiucf 04-27-2006 05:02 PM

On my campus, not many of the fraternities were supportive of members' academic goals during pledging and initation week. No one was outrightly forbidden from going to class (they were there!), but I don't think much studying was going on.

GreekSupporter 04-27-2006 05:05 PM

Actually to the post before last we didn't have ANY free time to study.

macallan25 04-27-2006 05:13 PM

Same with me.....and "I" week was no during exams....why someone would decide to do that is beyond me.

YEah I told them that I had two tests durring the final week durring iniation and they didn't do anything for me.

Rudey 04-27-2006 05:56 PM

Can someone explain to me what initiation you guys are all talking about that takes over a day? I assume it's not the ritual where the pledge becomes a brother because that would be one long ass ritual to remember.

Tom Earp 04-27-2006 06:18 PM

AMAZING, SIMPLY AMAZING!

I must have been out of School to long. This is beyond My Comprehsion for Pledgeing?

Just Call BS!

polosandpearls 04-27-2006 06:28 PM

Why are a lot of people on here quick to call bs on new people? There's a million threads on people asking advice on various topics, why is this any different? There's a search engine called google and greekchat can be found on there. Just because we don't have 10,000 posts doesn't mean we're 'fake'. Let your e-guard down, people!

To the OP:
If you want to rush again, go for it but like ktsnake said check the GL office to see who has the highest GPA and go from there...that's about the only advice I can give you.

That has nothing to do with 10,000 posts.

In reading the original post and what was said, then retorts, I then Called BS.

I have been around Greek Life for 40 + years and never heard of what He was posting. Inanity goes only so far for Me.:(

Wow, someone is a pretentious pseudo-intellectual. I bet you just salivated at the prospects of demonstrating your unexceptional spelling abilities. I will admit that I made a spelling error, however I have more important things to do than to correct my spelling on the internet, like studying for finals. I don't know you personally at all, however you seem to be someone who epitomizes narcissism. You seem to be the type of person who is so full of themself that after a long hard day when you take off your socks you like to sniff them, your socks are ripe with the foul aroma of sour milk and ammonia, and after you finally sit down and take your socks off, but just before you toss them in the hamper, you take a quick sniff to sample your odors. Also by your conduct you also seem to be the type of person to 'teehee' shortly afterwards. I know everyone can be a pretentious twat on occasion but to correct someone's spelling on a social message board is beyond normal aureate behavior.

It has also come to my question that your punctuation is suspect at best. You said: "I know everyone makes typos, but "durring" twice in one post?" and you used a question mark which is grammatically incorrect because there is a lack of a word that would imply a question.

GreekSupporter 04-27-2006 09:39 PM

By the way, the last post was directed at ShaedyKD.

macallan25 04-27-2006 09:39 PM

Yeah I agree with Tom, I have never heard of anything like that happening to someone. Why a chapter would hold initiation during the middle of exams very strange, at least to me.

Yeah I thought it was wierd too, which made wonder why they did it.

macallan25 04-27-2006 09:45 PM

I think you are full of shit. Where do you go to school and what chapter was this? Since you think their house smells and they are a bunch of douchebags, I don't see why you would mind saying.

Tom Earp,

I get it. People troll the site. It's the internet...nothing new here. If you re-read my post, I stated some people tend to jump down the throat of new people because they are quick to think they are trolling when they may be asking a legit question. If the OP is a troll, so be it; don't feed him. That invites more trolls. If you don't understand this, I do not know how to say it differently.

Macallan, I believe he said he was a pledge of Triangle.

edit: not a member, a pledge. my mistake.

Look munchkin, I'm sorry you didn't fit in at Triangle. You can rush again. Save your cranky attitude for law school, you will fit in PERFECTLY.

macallan25 04-27-2006 10:05 PM

Yeah, he said he was pledging Triangle.....not a member though bc he didn't get initiated. The whole story is really strange to me considering Triangle is all about academics being that they are a society of engineers, architects, and scientists.

I am usually not a tool, it's just that when someone corrects spelling on a social message board that pisses me off beyone belief.

macallan25 04-27-2006 10:07 PM

This makes you a tool. >>>

You are acting kind of like a girl. Triangle sucked for you. Get over it and figure out where you are going to rush next fall. Study for your LSATs. Go drink a beer.

GreekSupporter 04-27-2006 10:08 PM

Yeah Mac, that's why I decided to ask a bunch of greeks about this. It seemed strange to me also I just wondered if this was common place.

sdbeta1 04-27-2006 10:13 PM

If you backed out of Triangle days before initiation, how do you expect another fraternity to offer a bid?

ilikehazing 04-27-2006 10:35 PM

Triangle doesn't count as a fraternity, for fucks sake. You tried joining Triangle for girls? Good call on not knowing anything about Greek life.

macallan25 04-27-2006 10:47 PM

Yeah thats what makes this whole rant and rave really f*cking wierd. Triangle for the women? Traingle doesn't care about grades? Jesus.....

GreekSupporter 04-28-2006 12:00 AM

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking I was a college freshmen, however it's only been a year and everyone tells me I'm much more tactful in my actions, however several other fraternities have expressed interest in me, and I am completely honest about my old fraternity.

GreekSupporter 04-28-2006 12:24 AM

Thanks man, and I am not a troll this actually happened to me...however it has gone down hill I agree with that.

Kevin 04-28-2006 01:19 AM

Why do y'all think that he's a troll? You're suggesting that someone would impersonate an ex-Triangle pledge?

GreekSupporter 04-28-2006 01:20 AM

Right on man right on...for the record you 'assume' that I am ex-Triangle....

ilikehazing 04-28-2006 02:00 AM

You named off different types of triangles. Is there any other fraternity gay enough to do that? I rest my case.

GreekSupporter 04-28-2006 02:03 AM

For the record I did not say it at all, but I'm not denying it.

macallan25 04-28-2006 05:03 AM

Yeah actually you said that you were a Triangle pledge from Iowa State. And being a college freshman is no excuse for not realizing the good groups from the bad ones. Furthermore, I assume you are in law because there have been some posts about you studying for the LSAT? Why would you choose to join a society of engineers, architects, and scientists? I though membership was limited to those majors. I am confused.

PhiRhoSister 04-28-2006 10:35 AM

GreekSupporter,
If your story is true, then instead of quiting you should have reported the fraternity to its HQ.

As a member of a social sorority similar to Triangle, my sisters are very aware of the difficulties of engineering majors. We have test files that all sisters and associates can use. And we have an internal study-buddy/tutoring program, where one can ask for help in a particular subject. Most of our activities also are on the weekends, so that studing during the week is not interrupted. If you were pledging Triangle, their HQ would be very concerned with your pledging story.

GreekSupporter 04-28-2006 01:18 PM

Yeah I was thinking about that, but the guys at my house just said that the point of initation is to over extend yourseld and wear you out, and to work you beyond belief.

Im guessing they mean something akin to what was called in ye olde days "Hell Week."
