Probably some miscommunication...but I know that. Notice I said "A" ZPhiB and not "THE" ZPhiBs catered the event.

Not to argue semantics..but yeah.

Oh it's definitely not your fault...judging by a lot of posts, the author threw A LOT of people off.

It'd be wrong, too. But, in my experience, I've never heard of a BGLO throwing a satirical "white theme" Redneck Party or Trailer Trash Party! Or do things of this ilk. Not because they're morally superior, I don't think, but because this type of thing has no social traction, which it seemingly does in other contexts.

xo_kathy 04-12-2006 06:16 PM

Well this is, of course, disappointing to read. I have seen pictures of this chapter and know they do have some non-Caucasian members, though I don't recall ever seeing a black girl. Regardless, it does still strike me as ridiculous that no one along the lines of picking "awards" thought - 'maybe not the best idea"...

And the article was VERY confusing!

After reading and re-reading this article (and being almost completely thrown off), my guess is that this story is controversial because a Caucasian female student (who also happens to be a member of an HBGLO) was given an award for being the "Blackest" (read: most ghetto) Chi Omega and she's not even a member of the org who gave the award. She just happened to cater the event. I agree with jitterbug13 that the writer must repeat Journalism 101.

Poor chile. :( This is really bad.....

The article clearly states that there are no Black members of Chi Omega at Kent State.

The article also states that Candice Poole, the Black student, member of Zeta Phi Beta, is a student manager of dining/banquet services who was at the banquet working and heard the award.

A member of Chi Omega at Kent State who is NOT BLACK received the award as Blackest member award which could be translated to the Most Ghetto Member of the Kent State chapter of Chi Omega.

And it only took me one read to get this. :( :( :o

Honestly, I think the stereotype that Black is "ghetto" is seen EVERY DAY. Do you never watch MTV or BET? Everytime I turn it on it's a trashy African American screaming, listening to rap music, having promiscous sex, talking almost exclusively about sex, making jokes about the white race (which you most certainly would know that whites could not make jokes about blacks), etc.

Bill Cosby is one of the few stand-up guys in the Black community. I really admire him.

^^^ ignorant.

i think "most prejudiced" or "most bigoted" award would be a good one. i wonder who'd get pissy if they won it?

hmmm.....

I hear ya, but sometimes we read too fast and miss key points and have to go back and re-read. It happens all the time when reading posts on here, e.g., mistaking someone saying a Z Phi B catered the event as Z Phi B the organization catered the event. ;)

i dont think it was clearly stated, but in the third paragraph last line, it said something about candice not seeing any other black members there. so i guess that is where the assumptions came in.

Edited for spelling.:p

The contact info right before the link to the article implies Kent State. And since the article was written for the Kent State daily, the author probably felt no need to include the school in the text.
But, I hear ya. We need to be clear up front about the source when we post news articles. ;)

Thanks for further clarification, although I received some of the same clarification from lilsunshine214 and TristanDSP on the previous page. I had a "Blonde moment" while reading this article, it happens. Especially since my eyes are a bit tired and it's after 7PM.

also, its in the 8th paragraph where it lists those who are to attend the meeting.

It took one read for me as well and I don't see why everyone got so confused.

Rather than repeat what others have already said...

Didn't a GC PNM go XO at Kent State last year? Or was it the year before?

What was "impressive" about what Wolfman typed?

What he typed was very accurate as it speaks to Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. It is what racial and ethnic minorities (especially blacks) have been saying for decades. It isn't, however, the same thing that YOU articulated in your initial post. ;)

The people who thought of the award are still insensitive idiots.

Hopefully there would be some outcry, but there might be less outcry because whites (in general) have a different perception of threat when it comes to being the targets of racial insensitivity. It's best articulated as "your jokes MIGHT hurt my feelings if I give a damn, but you are probably in no real position to withhold anything from me in the larger society...so the REAL joke's on YOU."

I wonder how many people know who Walter Williams and John McWhorter are?

Bill Cosby's definitely a good one...he was mentioned earlier. J.C. Watts isn't bad. The head basketball coach at Ft. Worth Dunbar H.S. is good, too...I actually don't know if he's black. The guy who coached football at Yates (Houston) was a helluva coach...couldn't tell you anything else about him, though, other than he passed away several years ago.

Thank you! The screen name alone "ILikeHazing" let's anyone know he/she is not worth entertaining.

Back to the topic at hand...

This issue is disheartening. We're in the 21st century, yet some folks still do not see or just dont care when things can be seen as stereotypical, racial or just ignorant.

As college aged women you would think the ladies of that Chi Omega chapter would understand how their "award" is wrong, but I guess that's how the cycle continues...call it the never ending "blind eye"
