It's amazing that these relatively major media outlets can't comprehend that strikeouts aren't actually a bad thing - and they might actually be good, preventing double plays at the bottom of the order and showing a positive correlation with both power and overall batter's value.

(This may also explain why, no matter how well we wrote or how much we knew, you and I would probably never have these guys' jobs - it's sick)

You or Nic may know this - in Edes mailbag today, he alludes to problems between Doug Mirabelli and Red Sox management. I'm completely in the dark on this; were there any problems going on there?

That's the first I've ever heard of it - unless he was rubbed the wrong way by being traded?

Not sure - in the chat, it sounded like there were issues during his time with the Sox. It was something like "while they appreciated his time with the team, there were issues that made trading him easier for them."

I thought he was the definition of "team player," so that kind of surprised me.

True that. Even last year the pale hose and twinkies had many 3-2 or 2-1 battles. I forget that they have seemed to tap most of their young hitting talent from the well already and can't replace the people they used to be able to on a yearly basis.

Yeah - I'm not too confident in the White Sox offense either, but barring major steps from Kubel and Morneau (and Kubel prob won't even get playing time, b/c the Twins are retarded) they've really only stepped forward at 2B. Granted, replacement level is a step up at SS and 2B, but still - not confidence-inspiring.

Yeah that open handed slap was pretty sweet. Maybe they picked him up solely for that reason in case there is ever a brawl with the yankees this season. Him and A-Rod would have a good match but I still think a-rod would win it if he could throw the slap like he did in the 04 playoffs trying to knock the ball out of the 1st basemans glove.

It was actually out of Arroyo's glove.

Dude, they have Bartolo Colon. Wasn't he the best pitcher in the AL last year?

Oh wait, he wasn't. More proof that 90% of the baseball writers have no idea what they're talking about.

Also, anyone catch PTI last night, when Michael Wilbon advocated vigilante justice to get back at Tavarez? It was absolutely hilarious, he was getting all pumped up about it.

Yeah, like Lackey (for instance) is going to put up those kind of numbers again this year. Maybe what they are trying to get at is that they have Esteban Yan back again and that alone can hold off the A's.

In one of the frames, you can catch Tavarez thinking to himself "Uh oh, I just punched him."

The Varitek thing I could live with, but this was out of control. I'm not a big fan of Tavarez, and this proves why. He steps on him, punches him, then claims he doesn't want a fight because he's not "Mike Tyson."

I kind of hope Gaithright decks him the next time the two teams play.

Haha - I have all four of them on my fantasy team now. With Sheets starting the season on the DL, I needed another starter (especially with Liriano starting the season in the pen). Plus, this is the 3rd straight year I've had both Mauer and Morneau. You'd think I was a Twins fan.

Has anyone subscribed to MLB.tv? I'm debating whether or not its worth the 80 bucks so I can watch all those Soxs games I would otherwise miss...

docetboy 04-02-2006 01:43 PM

I didn't subscribe, knowing that WGN will broadcast ~75 Cubs games this season...and I can watch those for free.

I'd suggest if you really want to do it, wait until about the half-season point when they drastically drop the price. That way you get the good last half of the season games for a lot cheaper.

Our family doesn't do it for baseball, but we do subscribe for the NBA League Pass to get the Sacramento Kings games - I know my mom is happy about it, so we can get most of the games :)

And relatively speaking, $80 isn't too bad (how many games will that cover?) I think the League Pass is over $100 (I have no idea) - and that's only for a 72 game season!

From what I read (which was brief) it sounded like its over 200 games. I'm not sure if you get to choose your specific team or its more of a regional thing but I just want the Soxs games :).

docetboy - will the price go down for sure? I swear last year I remember Yahoo doing something similar and theirs was a bit cheaper than the MLB one. I looked for it but didnt find it.

docetboy 04-02-2006 10:39 PM

Typically the price will go down around the halfway point/all star break in order to keep getting new subscribers.

MLB.tv is amazing - I suggest it to anyone, they have a ridiculous number of games . . .

Also they have some excellent package deals, esp w/ ESPNmag etc. - you can get it pretty cheap that route

Only 2 years left on that 3/$27mil monstrosity, no worries Bobs . . .

Frank McCourt has ruined your team - have fun rooting for the Angels while the Giants get demolished in the NLDS.

:(

Dodgers bullpen has been hyped up all spring, but we just gave up 2 runs.

And Bartolo Cologne (i know that isnt how you spell it) just gave up 2 runs.

I wish I was at Petco :(

LOL we got yelled at by security last night for heckling Barry Bonds. I was instructed to stop mentioning his anatomy because there were children present. HOW WERE THOSE PARENTS PLANNING TO EXPLAIN BARRY BONDS TO THEIR CHILDREN?!!!

It's awful, but every time Giambi has a good game, I think "I hope he's not back on roids."

I think he heard some of it -- he kind of turned to look at us a few times. I was drinking heavily and don't even remember everything I was saying. After getting yelled at for the anatomy comments (although really, "balls" could mean, you know, BASEBALLS) I commented on his poor sportsmanship and the fact that he is a bad example for children. Then I made fun of his sciatica and I think my favorite was "HEY BARRY! MY MOM IS IN HER 60s AND HAS DIABETES AND SHE CAN RUN FASTER THAN YOU!!!"

The home run he hit went RIGHT TO OUR SEATS but we were in line for beer at the time so we missed it. I really wanted to catch the ball and throw it back, but oh well. I catch about as well as Barry Bonds, so it really didn't matter.
